SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Outrageously high electric bills are landing in inboxes across San Diego County, some nearing ,000.And it's not just the sweltering San Diego summer leading to the increases."I was wondering exactly what's going on and wondering if there was an issue," said Matt Berlin, a Point Loma resident who got a 0 electric bill this month from San Diego Gas and Electric. "I don't know what we're doing different from year to year."It's not just the near-record heat that is causing the increases due to higher air-conditioning use. SDG&E spokesperson Wes Jones said the utility instituted a state-mandated third usage tier for its highest users. Am I even on the right plan, what can I do?" Jones said.Jones said San Diegans can switch for free to a Time of Use plan, where energy is most expensive from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Then, they can plan ahead by setting the A/C lower before 4 p.m., turning it up when that time hits."You're going to experience some savings right there because your A/C is not running as hard from 4 to 9 but you're still using all that cooling you had during the day," he said.Jones said SDG&E is continuing to move all of its customers to the Time of Use plan. Each should transition by next year.He added that the utility will refund customers the difference if they end up paying more under Time of Use than the previous arrangement, for the first year. 2064

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One man was shot after a fight broke out near a house party in San Diego’s Jamacha-Lomita neighborhood late Saturday night. According to police, the shooting happened on the 1100 block of Koe Street at 11 p.m. Witnesses told police a fight broke out in the street near the house party before shots were fired. Police say the suspect left the scene while the victim was taken to Paradise Valley Hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound. The suspect was taken into custody after he was found at a nearby 7-Eleven with a gun in his car. At this time, the names of the suspect and victim haven’t been released. 645

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Poway Unified School District officials say they are going fully online for the fall school year after originally planning to give students the option for in-person instruction.In a letter to parents on Wednesday, the school district said that "stringent" standards that need to be met for in-person classes "have made it impossible for any San Diego County school district to physically reopen schools for in-person instruction before mid-September."PUSD said it planned for the possibility to resume classes in-person after the county was off the state's monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. But the requirement now requires that the county is off the watch list for 28 consecutive days, and if at any point the county exceeds the threshold for three days, it would be back on the state list and have to go through another 28-day cycle."In late Fall, we will reevaluate our plans taking into full consideration then-current public health conditions, and guidelines and restrictions from the Governor and public health department," the district said in a release. "While this information is likely to disappoint the majority of our staff and families who indicated a desire to return to on-campus learning as soon as possible, everyone should know that -- due to our extensive planning thus far -- PUSD will be ready for a prompt and safe return to in-person instruction if permitted to do so come January."The school district says its 2020-21 school year will start virtually on Sept. 2, and remain fully virtual through the December break from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1, 2021.The district adds that teachers and instructional assistants will receive additional training in virtual teaching platforms and tools in August and that the district will provide all the necessary technology for teachers and students. Earlier this week, SDG&E said forecasted conditions that may affect power lines prompted them to consider pulling the plug on customers over public safety.Santa Ana winds swirled across the county Wednesday, with the height of the event possibly coming on Halloween, as winds turn offshore Tuesday night through Thursday, matching — if not eclipsing — wind speeds compared to last week's Santa Ana event. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police agencies throughout San Diego County are investigating multiple brewery break-ins, all within the last week. Employees at Serpentine Cider say they were hit last Friday morning. Their surveillance cameras captured a man walking up to their business, moving a planter and then smashing a window to get inside. The person got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. Just two miles away, Longship Brewery says they were hit that very same morning. The suspect, also broke a window and crawled inside, getting away with an empty cash drawer. In Vista, Barrel Harbor Brewing confirms with 10News someone also broke into their place the same exact way. They reported the crime to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. On social media, a fourth brewery, Black Plague, posted pictures of a break-in at their business on Instagram. Oceanside Police is investigating that incident. So far, police haven't confirmed if the incidents are related or released a description of who they're looking for. 1029
