SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff's Department has released the number of inmates it transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody in 2019. In a meeting that lasted nearly four hours on Tuesday, the department announced it transferred 271 people to ICE for offenses like assault, battery, and sexual abuse exploitation. The information was released during the virtual Truth Act Forum, a forum required by law, for any local law enforcement agency that chooses to transfer people to ICE. After the department's presentation, there were hours of public comment criticizing the practice. There was also a presentation from the San Diego Immigrant Rights Consortium. "We want to end all transfers, regardless of whether they were allowed under the law or not," said Lilian Serrano, the chair of the consortium. Critics also argue that Sheriff Bill Gore has found a loophole by posting lists of "Inmates Pending Release"; critics are calling for that practice to stop. "What we’re seeing is ICE picking people up in the parking lots -- this is a practice we’re seeing throughout our county," said Serrano. After listening to hours of public comment, Gore addressed the community's concerns, saying he wants to form a working group to look at some of the issues brought up during public comment. “I think we can come to an accommodation when it comes to the inmate pending release report. I think we can make changes there, significant changes there,” said Gore. The sheriff said he's following the Values Act, only transferring those with a qualifying conviction or judicial warrant, with ICE only allowed contact with inmates if they agree to be interviewed. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Three Port of San Diego Harbor Police officers tested positive for coronavirus, the department announced Wednesday.After learning of the positive results, the Port of San Diego says it notified the department and port staff.The officers are isolated and undergoing treatment at their homes and will seek further care should it be necessary. Their condition is unclear at this time.The department also said it’s working with San Diego County health officials to conduct contract tracing and notify people who had close contact with the officers.“Prioritizing the health and well-being of the public, our partners, and Port employees and their families, the Port encourages and reminds the public, for their health as well as that of first responders, to wear face coverings, practice and maintain social distancing, wash hands frequently, and avoid crowded spaces and gatherings,” the Port of San Diego said in a news release. 953

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Time is running out to sign up for the San Diego Promise, a tuition-free college program within the San Diego Community College District. So far more than 1,700 students from 198 California high schools have signed up for the program, which provides tuition and textbook grants for up to two years for first-time, full-time students. The deadline to apply is June 28. Officials with the district say about three times more students have so far signed up compared to last year. “The San Diego Promise offers much more than a financial guarantee,” said Lynn Neault, SDCCD Vice Chancellor of Student Services. “The program’s many wrap-around services result in San Diego Promise students faring better than their non-Promise counterparts academically.”To sign up, students need to complete a fall 2019 admissions application for City, Mesa or Miramar colleges, complete a 2019-2020 FAFSA application and fill out a Promise application. All first-time students are eligible to apply, regardless of financial status, the district says. The program launched in 2016 with 186 students participating. During the 2017-2018 school year, that number increased to 661. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego City Council Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of adding movable tiny homes to the list of options on how to offer more affordable housing to citizens.Tiny houses are similar to granny flats, but smaller. Tiny houses come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are equipped with the basics for living, sleeping, and cooking. They range in size from 150 square feet to 400 square feet and cost between ,000 and 0,000.Tiny homes can help create an affordable option for low-income residents that doesn’t require a taxpayer subsidy.City officials said, “A significant portion of households in San Diego can afford a movable tiny house as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). The average cost of rent for a tiny home is 0 a month. A property owner would recover their initial investment in eight years. After that, the rent from the tiny house could help cover their mortgage and other expenses.”Currently, the city allows homeowners to build accessory dwelling units on their properties. With Tuesday’s approval, homeowners can add tiny homes to their properties.“Moveable tiny homes are a great option that naturally increases affordable housing at no cost to taxpayers. It’s a win for the homeowner, it’s a win for the renter, and it’s a win for the taxpayer,” said San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman. “I appreciate my colleagues support for this important housing reform.
