(AP) — Lawmakers can avoid the long lines plaguing California's Department of Motor Vehicles offices by visiting an office near the Capitol not open to the public, a decades-old practice under fresh fire as wait times surge.The office provides services for current and retired lawmakers, their staff and some other state employees, The Sacramento Bee reported Thursday. A 2006 Capitol Weekly article highlighted the debate over the office, referencing a small-government activist who criticized it for years.The office has been open for decades, moving locations around the Capitol. At one point it was open to the public. The Sacramento Bee reports the statue of Father Junipero Serra in Capitol Park was brought down during a protest focusing on the rights and historical struggle of indigenous people. The 18th century Roman Catholic priest founded nine of California’s 21 Spanish missions and forced Native Americans to stay at those missions after they were converted or face brutal punishment. Statues of Serra have been defaced in California for several years by people who said he destroyed tribes and their culture. 638

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to quarantine for 10 days after one of his staffers tested positive for COVID-19. A spokesperson for the governor's office stated the staffer tested positive Sunday afternoon. Newsom was tested after those results and his test came back negative. The statement says the governor's 10-day quarantine is out of “an abundance of caution.” Another person in the governor's office tested positive in October, and the governor tested negative back then. Last month, members of Newsom's family were exposed to someone who tested positive for the virus. Newsom, his wife and four children tested negative at that time. 685
