PHNOM PENH, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia reported on Monday that some 54 Cambodian children had been killed by dengue fever in the first nine months of this year, compared to 37 kids dying of the disease in the whole year of 2010.From January to September this year, some 12,392 cases of dengue fever had been reported with 54 children killed by the disease. The whole year 2010 reported only 5,497 cases, Ngan Chantha, director of dengue control at the Ministry of Health, said on Monday."This year's rainy season has been plagued by floods, leading to more cases of the disease," he said. "I would like to appeal to parents to let their children sleep under mosquito nets and if their kids have any symptom that is suspicious of the disease, they should urgently send them for medical attention."Dengue is caused by mosquitoes. The disease causes an acute illness of sudden onset that usually follows symptoms such as headache, fever, exhaustion, severe muscle and joint pain, swollen glands and rash.In Cambodia, the outbreak of dengue fever usually begins at the onset of the rainy season from May to October. 

BEIJING, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's railways will carry 235 million passengers during the 40-day Spring Festival travel rush, up 6.1 percent year-on-year, the Ministry of Railways said Friday.A daily average of 5.88 million people will make trains trips from Jan. 8 to Feb. 16, the ministry said in a statement on its website.Economic hubs such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Hangzhou and the inland provinces of Sichuan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Anhui and Hunan will see the most activity during the period, as millions of rural migrant workers and students head home for family reunions, according to the statement.The ministry has arranged for extra trains in anticipation of the rush, the statement said, but added that "the conflict remains between passenger demand and railway capacity."Railway authorities have long been under pressure to increase capacity and improve ticketing services, as many citizens find it extremely hard to secure a single ticket during major holidays.The ministry has begun allowing customers to book their tickets online or by phone to ease the ordeal of buying tickets. BRUSSELS, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) --- The European Commission on Friday gave the green light to Microsoft's acquisition of voice and video communication provider Skype, thus removing the last hurdle in the process.According to a statement released by the Commission, "the deal would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (The EU plus Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway) or any substantial part of it."The Commission explained that it found that in the area of consumer communications, the parties' activities overlap in video communications, where Microsoft is active through its Windows Live Messenger.However, the Commission considered that there were no competition concerns in this growing market where numerous other players, including Google, were present.Skype was bought by eBay in 2005 at the price of 4.1 billion U.S. dollars, and sold out at 2.75 billion U.S. dollars in 2009. Microsoft declared to take over Skype at a cost of 8.5 billion dollars on May 10, 2011.

BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- A total of 14,976 cases of medical disputes were handled by the country's emerging third-party mediation organizations, with over 80 percent of them being successfully settled, said Vice Health Minister Zhang Mao.Zhang told Xinhua recently in an exclusive interview that China has to date set up 1,358 third-party mediation organizations to settle medical disputes.The third-party mediation organizations have come into being since late 2009 which usually hire retired doctors, medical experts and lawyers to bridge the communication gaps between doctors and patients and direct patients to resort to legal means in settling medical disputes.The third-party mediation system for medical disputes is a latest reform to ease doctor-patient tension that sometimes escalate into violence.Such incidents erupted several times this year, and in an extreme case in September, a 43-year-old surgeon in Beijing Tongren Hospital was stabbed by a patient into serious injury. The attack was believed to have been triggered by a medical dispute in which the patient alleged that the surgeon had committed malpractice during an operation.
