SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An old airport terminal turned innovation lab hopes to ultimately improve the customer experience at San Diego International Airport (SAN).The second group of innovators has begun the 16-week accelerator program to "field test" and develop their concepts in a real-world airport environment.The Innovation Lab was launched to reduce barriers for innovators to break into the aviation industry. Its goals are to develop concepts that can enhance the passenger experience, improve operational efficiency, increase revenues and/or decrease costs. The 3,500-square-foot space offers a functional mini-terminal area with ticket counters and a bag claim carousel, all without passenger or security concerns to work around."We wanted to provide a location where we could invite innovators in to test their solutions," said Rebecca Bloomfield, spokesperson for SAN. Jon Wisner, Director of Business Development & Partnerships at HOHM Inc., says they've already gotten good feedback on a sleeping pod they hope to bring to airports. "What we are trying to validate is the best usage for the pod - whether it be used for a nap, lactation room, or privacy just in general, meditation, prayer," said Wisner. The pods are currently being tested by airport staff. The five entrants include: AirporTour - testing interactive airport guides with audio tours Ciari Guitars, Inc. - offering a guitar kiosk featuring a foldable, travel guitar where travelers can play and/or listen to music while relaxing HOHM, Inc. - providing high-tech sleep pods for travelers to rest in for 30-minute to four-hour periods in otherwise underutilized space InnoTech Systems LLC - using autonomous robot guides to provide navigation through the airport and other travel assistance Nuvve Corporation - pioneering vehicle-to-grid applications at airports with excess electric vehicle (battery-stored) energy sold back to the grid or buildings during peak demand timesAt the end of 16 weeks the companies will have a chance to pitch their company and hopefully land a contract with SAN. 2085
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — After a bitter primary, voters are getting a clearer picture of who will move on in the race to replace Congressman Duncan Hunter in East County's 50th Congressional District. Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Republican Darrell Issa, a former Congressman, are leading the field. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Campa-Najjar had 34 percent of the vote; Issa had 25 percent, former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio had 21 percent, and State Senator Brian Jones had 11 percent. There are still about 350,000 provisional and mail-in ballots to be counted. It is unclear how many of those would include district voters. RELATED: Campa-Najjar, Issa hold leads in 50th Congressional DistrictHunter resigned in January after pleading guilty to one felony count of campaign fraud. The seat has remained vacant since. On Wednesday, Campa-Najjar and Issa began taking at aim at one another in anticipation of facing off in the November runoff. Campa-Najjar pointed out at that Issa does not live in the 50th Congressional District, and said he was part of an older political establishment. "He's been going around the county trying to find a seat for himself. He fled his own seat and now wants to run in this district. It's not up for grabs, it's not for sale. We're going to vote for someone who is from the district," Campa-Najjar said. Meanwhile, Issa said he is very connected to the 50th District, and has represented swaths of it in the past. "At the end of the day, I can't take him as seriously, as long as he isn't voting for a Republican speaker that's going to, in fact, move a conservative, positive agenda, which I will," Issa said. Campa-Najjar is pitching a moderate agenda that he says can bring together those who are both pro-choice and pro-life, and those who are pro-and anti-gun rights. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Strike Team called to battle the Kincade Fire returned home Halloween night, and told 10News of the harrowing fight.The team was comprised of five engines and 21 firefighters from Imperial Beach, Coronado, San Diego, and Chula Vista, according to Battalion Chief Rob Hartman. The group spent four days on the front lines."The resources were very limited just because of everything going on in the state," Hartman said, adding there was no air support in the area where they were fighting the fire.Another challenge they faced was, "just finding a water source. Sometimes out in the country, it's not like there's a fire hydrant every 300 feet. We had to drive a ways to get water to fill up and get back into the fight again."Hartman said they got hardly any sleep and worked in constant dark smoke and strong winds."This is your area, you want to save everything but there are just times where it's just not going to happen."Hartman said it was a struggle to save some homes. One firefighter spotted a home down a narrow driveway that was starting to catch fire."It was just so dangerous, the road was so narrow, there was no place to turn around. The house was already, it was going to be over the amount of water we had and we had to just turn to the guy and say this is going to be a loser. We're not going to be able to do this safely," Hartman said.He described the struggle of losing any businesses or homes during the battle, "you try to put yourself in the position of the owner, so you want to safe the house, you want to save every house... Sometimes it's a little heart-wrenching."Ultimately the strike team stopped the fire line, protecting the City of Windsor.Hartman said they remain ready to deploy if needed. 1764
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A woman involved in a fiery multi-vehicle crash in the College Area on Wednesday died several hours after being taken to the hospital.Casey Diane Hargis, 22, was pronounced dead at UCSD Medical Center on Thursday morning, after a vehicle slammed into the Ford Fusion she was in as it was stopped at an intersection the night before.Hargis and the driver, a 22-year-old woman, were both taken to the hospital suffering from second- and third-degree burns on more than 70% of their bodies, along with internal bleeding.RELATED: Several hurt in multi-vehicle crash at College Area intersectionHargis died of vascular injuries from pelvic fractures, according to the county medical examiner's report.The condition of the driver has not been officially released.Wednesday, a 63-year-old man was driving in his Mercedes when he suffered an unknown medical issue and slammed into the back of the Ford that Hargis was traveling in at 70th Street and El Cajon Blvd.The force of the crash pushed both vehicles into the opposite lanes of El Cajon Blvd, where they were struck by three other vehicles, causing the Ford to ignite and leaving the women trapped inside before witnesses could pull them from the vehicle.The Mercedes driver was taken to the hospital for treatment, but his condition wasn't immediately released. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Ahead of the United Nations Climate Summit next week, 10News is diving deeper into the affects of climate change. Climate change is leading to more dangerous and deadly wildfires and so often after fires scorch the ground in the fall, the heavy winter rains in atmospheric rivers lead to mudslides and flooding.The scary reality is that these types of storms are going to get stronger. According to Alexander Gershunov, a research meteorologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD, "we know for certain that atmospheric rivers are going to get stronger in the future, in a warmer atmosphere more water vapor can be held so atmospheric rivers are basically plumes of very intense concentrated moisture and they're just going to get wetter as they get warmer. As those wetter atmospheric rivers hit the coast and coastal mountain ranges the moisture is squeezed out of them and we get more extreme precipitation events."He goes on to say, "climate change is definitely making atmospheric rivers warmer and wetter as well as longer and fatter so they carry more moisture. In the future they will produce even more of the precipitation extremes and be an even bigger contributor to the water resources of the region as well as to flooding."Climate change may lead to a more devastating threat, called the ARkStorm.The ARkStorm is patterned after the historic flooding of 1861 to 1862, but uses modern modeling methods and data from large storms in 1969 and 1986. The ARkStorm draws heat and moisture from the tropical pacific, forming a series of atmospheric rivers that approach hurricane-strength and then slam the west coast creating a statewide disaster.In 2010, scientific experts met to create the ARkStorm Scenario Report for the USGS, imagining aspects of flooding of biblical proportions reaching the Western U.S. with weeks of rain and snow followed by catastrophic floods, landslides and property and infrastructure damage which would cripple California's economy.CLIMATE CHANGE:-- A growing wildfire season-- Sea-level rise and the impacts to San Diego-- Living in a warming world"What was found that the cost could exceed 0 billion. Mission Beach, which routinely sees flooding during heavy rain, is underwater in the ARkStorm scenario.
