PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) — A Pine Valley restaurant owner says he will defy the county's order that shuts down indoor dining beginning Saturday."We are over it," said Larry McNamer, who owns Major's Diner in Pine Valley. "We can't do any more going backward. We can't. Not and stay open and be a viable part of the community."McNamer says 2020 has been a very challenging year, with sales down and its staff cut in half. Now, the increase in the coronavirus case rate is pushing San Diego County into the state's purple tier of restrictions, it's most strict. That means come Saturday, restaurants will no longer be allowed to serve indoors at 25% capacity, instead, they'll be limited to outdoor-only dining as the weather turns cold. McNamer said he takes the virus very seriously and has put social distancing measures in place. However, he says moving to outdoor dining only will make it impossible to survive, with temperatures in the 30s in the mornings. The diner is only open for breakfast and lunch."And at this point, if they want me to, I'll be more than happy to put the keys on the counter and leave them an invoice for the business and they can write me a check for it," he said.In a statement, the California Department of Public Health said it understands the frustrations, but that the spread of coronavirus remains a major concern. "California’s cases of COVID-19 are ticking upward, and the state is urging Californians to continue to do everything they can to protect themselves and the community from increased transmission of the virus," the statement said. "We know that this is hard, as many of us feel exhausted, isolated or impatient."The county restaurant industry has been hit especially hard amid the pandemic, with jobs down about 17% over the year, or 22,000 positions. "All hopes have to be on this vaccine being distributed quickly and working, and allowing us to move through the tiers," said Ray Major, chief economist at SANDAG. McNamer, who owns the diner with his wife Debi, said if the county levies fines on them, so be it. "Wonderful, where are you going to get it?" he said. "You can fine me 0,000 a day and it's not going to do you any good because you're not going to get the money." 2240

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A night of peaceful protests in Philadelphia gave way to more unrest and some demonstrators clashed with police after a Black man was killed by officers in a shooting caught on video.Police say Walter Wallace Jr. was wielding a knife and ignored orders to drop the weapon before officers fired shots at him Monday afternoon. The lawyer for the Wallace family says they had called for an ambulance to get their son help with a mental health crisis, not for police intervention.“I find it extremely, extremely emotionally taxing to think about calling for assistance and wind up with the people who you called killing you. I can’t even conceive the concept,” said the family’s attorney, Shaka Johnson.Tuesday night, about 500 people upset by the 27-year-old’s death marched to a police station, where they were met by officers with riot shields. Police say some of the demonstrators threw debris at officers, and two were injured. There were sporadic reports of arrests in other areas and video showed people streaming into stores and stealing goods as they left on the opposite side of the city from where Wallace was shot.Following the night of unrest, a White House statement asserted that it was another consequence of what the administration called “Liberal Democrats’ war against the police.”The shooting victim’s father, Walter Wallace Sr., told CNN on Tuesday that he wants any looting or violence in his son's name to stop in the city.“It’s not going to solve anything,” he told Chris Cuomo. “It’s just going to make things worse and my son wouldn’t want that. I want it done by the legal way.” 1627

Parents of students who had been evacuated from Santa Fe High School in Texas following a school shooting that left 10 dead were shocked to find a man carrying a pistol approaching the school to comfort students. The man, who was wearing a Trump cap and carrying an American flag, said he was walking in front of the school in order to "make America great again.""These folks are having a rough morning and could use some support, and I think these are the kinds of support that they need right now," the man told told reporters."Offering support," the man said, when asked what his "plan of action" was. "'God bless y'all' will go a long ways right now for a lot of people."A parent of a student called the man "an embarrassment.""This guy right here is sick. I'm sorry, he's sick," the man told ABC. "He doesn't need to be walking around the school, carrying a flag and a pistol. He does not need to be out here doing that, and I'm glad they're stopping him."  989

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KGTV) - The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway reopened to visitors Monday after storm damage that closed the popular attraction for almost two months. The Valentine’s Day storm severed the power feed to the mountain and washed out a road, according to tram officials. Crews spent weeks making necessary repairs and cleaning up damage. The closure kept 100,000 visitors away, tram officials estimate. The storm led to almost million in repair costs and lost revenues. “It’s been a long six weeks for everyone, but today we are delighted to finally welcome back Tram visitors. On behalf of the entire Tramway staff, we are thrilled to be back open for business and truly appreciate the community’s support throughout our closure,” said Tramway General Manager Nancy Nichols. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which is the world’s largest rotating tram car, opened in 1963. Its 80-passenger cars take travelers from the desert floor to the Mountain Station at an elevation of 8,516 feet in 10 minutes. Visitors can enjoy two restaurants, a natural history museum, documentary theaters, and hiking trails at the top. The tram opens at 10 a.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are .95 for adults and .95 for children ages 3 to 10. Ticket sales start at the station half an hour before opening. Visitors can also buy tickets online starting April 8. 1404
