VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. – Authorities have released surveillance footage showing Naya Rivera before her disappearance and the 911 call that led to the search for the "Glee" star.Rivera is presumed dead after disappearing while boating with her 4-year-old son at Lake Piru in Southern California.The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office says Rivera rented a boat at the lake Wednesday afternoon and went for an excursion with her son. Thursday evening, officers released security camera footage of the two at the boat launch.Boaters tell authorities that they later found Rivera’s boat drifting in the northern portion of the lake with her son sleeping onboard. A woman called 911 and notified law enforcement of the situation."The emergency is: We have a missing person," an employee of the rental boat business said. "We found a little girl in one of the boats by herself, and the mom's nowhere to be found."The 911 caller initially said the boy was a girl, because of his long hair, KCBS reports.Rivera’s son told investigators that he and his mother had been swimming in the lake and he had gotten back on the boat, but his mom didn’t.Authorities say the child had a life vest on and an adult life vest was found on the boat. The child is healthy and with family.Since Rivera’s disappearance, authorities have been using helicopters, boat crews, divers and unmanned aerial vehicles to search the lake, but there’s been no sign of Rivera yet.Thursday evening, the sheriff’s office announced that the search for the actress has turned into a recovery mission and that she is presumed dead.“Investigators believe Rivera drowned in what appears to be a tragic accident,” the office wrote in a press release.Rivera is best known for her role as Santana on the Fox TV show “Glee.” She appeared in nearly every episode of the musical comedy drama since 2009. 1856

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris' husband, Doug Emhoff, is set to join the faculty of Georgetown Law next month.Emhoff will serve as a Distinguished Visitor from Practice and teach a two-credit course in the spring semester called “Entertainment Law Disputes." He will also serve as a Distinguished Fellow of Georgetown Law’s Institute for Technology Law and Policy. TUCSON, Ariz. — A nationwide scam claims you'll be arrested because you missed jury duty and you'll have to pay right away to escape it. You might think you can spot a gimmick a mile away, but a Tucson businesswoman fell for it last week.At the start of Denise Hausler's busy workday as a licensed professional counselor, she received a call that went to voicemail. The man identified her by name."Hello, Ms. Hausler, this is Sgt. Adam with the Pima County Sheriff's Department warrant and citation division," the caller said. "Ma'am I'm calling in regards of an ongoing civil matter, ma'am."Hausler called him back right away. The imposter told her there were two federal warrants out for her arrest. Hausler panicked, fearing she would be arrested at her office in front of her clients."And he said, 'We're going to send someone to arrest you unless you volunteer to come down to the sheriff's office off of Benson Highway,' which made sense because the sheriff's office is off of Benson Highway," she said.The caller told her if she drove down to the sheriff's department right away, she can post bond then appear before a judge who will probably give her the money back."I'm panicked, I'm crying, I'm literally thanking this man for helping me not be arrested and being able to go home and not be detained and apologizing," she said.And he told her she can't get off the phone with him or talk to anyone."'We're going to track you by phone until you get to this location because we don't want you to flee,' and I'm believing this," she said.Minutes later, the caller instructed her to first buy My Vanilla cards from Walmart — five of them — totaling ,500 because the payment system was down at the sheriff's department and those specific cards are used for these types of cases.And she believed him. "I know, I know," she said. "In retrospect, I think, who am I? It doesn't even sound real. But when you're in it, he was so intimidating and so direct and telling me, 'We're going to come and detain you.' " She bought the cards. The scammer then told her to read all the card numbers to him to verify they're valid.She did, but at that point she became suspicious and asked a stranger to call the sheriff's department."And the man said, 'You're getting scammed. You need to get in there an undo your cards,' " she said.But it was too late. She could only recover less than a ,000. Hausler wanted to share her story because the scam can be very believable."I just don't want other people to fall for it. If you hear 'My Vanilla,' now I know the sheriff's department does not come to get you if you did miss jury duty. I didn't know that," said Hausler.KGUN called that same phone number left on Hausler's voicemail and it's the same voice saying it's the Pima County Sheriff's Department. These con artists used a spoofed phone number.The Arizona Attorney General says legitimate government offices will not threaten you with imprisonment or demand that you pay a debt immediately.    Law enforcement and courts in southern Arizona have also been warning people not to fall for it.The Arizona Superior Court in Pima County has received several recent reports of jury service scams in Pima County. VALLEY CENTER, Calif. (KGTV) — A North County student was arrested Friday after a reported school threat.Administrators at Oak Glen High School in Valley Center learned of a potential threat from a suspended, 15-year-old student at about 8 a.m., San Diego Sheriff's Department said. Deputies did not elaborate on the nature of the threat.The high school and nearby Valley Center High were placed in a lock down as deputies responded. Deputies identified the student and soon located and arrested the suspect.SDSO said a search of the student's home was conducted, but no weapons were located.Both high schools were released from their lock downs just after 9 a.m.The student has been booked into Juvenile Hall, SDSO said. Vaping is being linked to an increased risk of Covid-19 among teenagers and young adults, according to a new study.Researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine looked at connections between youth vaping and Covid-19 cases in the U.S. They analyzed online surveys conducted in May by 4,351 people between the ages of 13 and 24.Among teens and young adults who took a coronavirus test, those who vaped were five to seven times more likely to test positive.“Teens and young adults need to know that if you use e-cigarettes, you are likely at immediate risk of COVID-19 because you are damaging your lungs,” said the study’s senior author, Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, PhD, professor of pediatrics.The participants were evenly divided between those who had used e-cigarettes and those who had never used nicotine products.Participants who admitted to using both cigarettes and e-cigarettes in the previous 30 days were almost five times as likely to have Covid-19 symptoms, including coughing, fever, tiredness and difficulty breathing, compared to those who never smoked or vaped.Young people who vaped or smoked, or both, were about two to nine times more likely to receive COVID-19 tests than nonusers.Among those surveyed who had taken a Covid-19 test, those who had used both e-cigarettes and cigarettes in the previous 30 days were 6.8 times more likely to test positive for the coronavirus.“This study tells us pretty clearly that youth who are using vapes or are dual-using [e-cigarettes and cigarettes] are at elevated risk, and it’s not just a small increase in risk; it’s a big one,” said the study’s lead author, postdoctoral scholar Shivani Mathur Gaiha, PhD.Researchers hope their study will be a warning about the dangers of vaping, and also prompt the Food and Drug Administration to consider tighter regulations on vaping products. 1856
