A gunman killed himself after shooting six people dead and injuring two others at a hospital in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava on Tuesday.One of the victims was shot in an operating theater and later died. The head of the hospital, Ji?í Havrlant, told reporters outside the hospital that all of the victims were patients, and that the suspect was shooting people at close range in their heads and chests.The incident happened just after 7 a.m., according to interior minister Jan Hamá?ek, who added that police and emergency response units were in attendance.Police said the "dangerous armed perpetrator" who was carrying a "short handgun" had fled the scene in a silver-gray Renault Laguna.The 42-year-old suspect later shot himself in the head in the vehicle before officers could bring him into custody, police said."When the police arrived to the site of the car, the suspect was still alive. Research shows the number of mass shootings has created an increased level of anxiety for a growing number of people. That’s the case for Mila Johns, who doesn’t leave her Maryland home as much as she used to. Johns feels defenseless and gripped by fear that she could become the next victim of a mass shooting. “I've changed my day-to-day routine,” she says. “I don't go to the movies. When we go out, I know where the exits are. I sit with my back to the wall. Sometimes it's easier to just not deal with it and stay home.” When she does go out, Johns went as far as buying a trauma pack—which includes trauma pads, sterile gloves, duct tape, bandages, dressing and antiseptic—to take with her. Johns’ 13-year-old daughter also carries on her backpack when she goes to school. “Sadly, that's where she's most likely to have to use it, it feels” Johns says. “And that's just heartbreaking.” Johns knows some people may feel she's overreacting, but she points out that research shows the amount of mass shootings in the U.S. this year has outpaced the number of days. That's according to Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit research group. It qualifies mass shootings as four or more people shot or killed, excluding the shooter. As of now, 2019 is on track to average more than one mass shooting a day.“We're at, I think on Sunday it was 251 mass shootings on the 216th day of the year,” Johns says. “It just feels inevitable.” Daniel Z. Lieberman, a professor of psychiatry at George Washington University, says although mass shootings are happening more frequently, it’s still very rare.“The risk of being killed in a mass shooting is about 1 in 100,000,” he explains. “Compare that to the risk dying from cancer, which is 1 in 7; dying in an automobile, that's about 1 in 100, so rationally, it just doesn't make sense to worry about that.” He says it's normal to have some anxiety after a tragedy, but he says people can get caught up with the idea of being in danger rather than the reality. “Anxiety is not a rational experience. A couple from New York is suing a fertility clinic after a woman gave birth to other couples' babies because of an IVF mixup, according to a federal lawsuit filed in US District Court.The mother, who is Asian, gave birth to two non-Asian babies, and each child was a genetic match to a different couple that was also a client at the fertility clinic, the lawsuit states. The Asian couple was then forced to give up the babies to their true genetic parents.The couple, identified only as A.P. and Y.Z., live in Flushing, New York, and were married in 2012. A lawsuit has been filed against the food delivery driver accused of stabbing a local restaurant owner.On Oct. 27, 2018, Mackie Allen was waiting in the parking lot for his DoorDash delivery run to be ready. Roma Deli & Restaurant owner Fabio Coppola came out and knocked on his window to let Allen known the food was ready — that’s when he says Allen became hostile. Once inside, Coppola says the DoorDash driver started screaming obscenities at him. Despite his efforts to calm him down, Copolla said he would file a complaint against DoorDash because of Allen’s behavior. That’s when Allen allegedly lost it, pulled out a pocket knife and slashing Coppola’s left hand. The owner says he ran for his life, and that Allen then stabbed him in the ribs below the heart and in the back multiple times outside. It’s believed Allen then delivered the food from Roma Deli to the DoorDash customer. “This is a life or death situation,” says Donavin Britt, self-defense expert. Britt has been teaching folks how to protect themselves at Las Vegas Krav Maga for years and knows all too well the dangers the food service industry faces now more than ever.“You have to devise a plan, all business owners out there are known to carry cash, you’re moving back and forth, you’re dealing with unruly customers,” says Britt.“You got to be ready to take them down or run as fast as you can.” With food delivery services on the rise like DoorDash and Uber Eats, Britt believes the threat is amplified.
