JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — Latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows the suicide rate among young people between the ages of 10 and 17 increased 70 percent from 2006 to 2016.“In all my years of community mental health, I’ve never once been afraid to open my email in the morning,” Tim DeWeese said. “Today I’m afraid to open my email to see that someone else has committed suicide or that there’s been another homicide or there’s been another shooting."For more than 20 years, DeWeese has been with Johnson County Mental Health in Kansas, and has seen vast changes from the time he’s started.“It seems like we can’t go a week or a couple days without seeing something, so that’s the hardest part,” DeWeese said.CDC data also showed while black youth killed themselves less than white youth, the increase rate was higher, 77 percent within that decade.In Kansas alone, the suicide rate is higher than the national average, with Johnson County being number one in the state.“More than one Kansan dies everyday from suicide,” DeWeese said.DeWeese said there could be a number of contributing factors.“Lack of availability of mental health resources,” DeWeese said. “Our country, our state, has not necessarily put an emphasis on funding mental health treatment.”He said the stigma surrounding mental health could also be playing a role.“When we see these mass shootings occur or anything bad happen, immediately that person says that person has a mental illness,” DeWeese said.He said this does nothing but further stigmatize a mental illness. “And it really promotes people not to seek treatment,” DeWeese said.John County Mental Health recently started providing free gun locks at the center.“If you can create a barrier such as a gun lock, then — if actually in those two minutes it would take to unlock the gun or to find the key — then a person may rethink that decision,” DeWeese said.He said he encourages anyone who may know someone who is struggling not be afraid to ask them how they’re feeling, if they feel like harming themselves, and to listen.For more on suicide prevention, click here.— 2161

La Jolla residents are beyond frustrated after yet another truck got stuck on one of its busiest streets, a problem they thought the city fixed last week.The latest incident happened Saturday, when a delivery truck got trapped trying to turn up steep Hillside Drive from busy Torrey Pines Road. The truck jutted out into Torrey Pines Road, blocking one lane. "I am completely flabbergasted," La Jolla resident Diane Kane said. "Clearly whatever they did, it was not effective."The city recently installed a cross gutter at the base of Hillside Drive, which residents say made the problem worse. On May 6, it took a second, more powerful tow truck to free a truck that had been lodged at the intersection for hours. Residents complained to the city, which dispatched crews to smooth out the asphalt on Torrey Pines Road to make it more flush with the cross-gutter. However, that only helped make it easier for cars and light trucks to get up and down without bottoming out. A city spokesman said warning signs telling large trucks to avoid the intersection would remain. “City staff are in the process of assessing the intersection to see what additional remedies, if any, can be implemented to help with this problem," city spokesman Alec Phillipp said. "We continue to direct commercial trucks to abide by the signage in the area stating that trucks shall not be using this intersection.”Kane said residents want the city to improve its signage and alert directional apps to instruct trucks to avoid the area. 1519

However, the company's corporate communications team was unwilling to respond to any questions, adding that it is not staffed to do so."As always our focus is to have merchandise available for our members at low warehouse prices," a spokesman wrote in an email.According to the Costco website, the kits are administered by Azova, which is a telemedicine platform.A fact sheet for patients found on the Azova website shows the test used is the P23 Labs TaqPath SARS CoV-2 Assay.The test has not been cleared or approved by the Food and Drug Administration. However, like many tests, it has received emergency use authorization from the agency.That means the makers of the test need to continually submit data to the FDA, which will evaluate the information and study the accuracy of diagnoses.Azova claims 98% of positive tests and 99% of negative test results are accurate."Saliva testing can be very accurate. It is probably chosen (for at-home testing) because the chance of having user error is much less than say a nasal swab," Dr. Dana Hawkinson of the University of Kansas Health System said.A customer who purchases a kit from Costco must complete a health assessment online with Azova and register for a lab order and test kit.The actual kit should come the next day, but results won't arrive for one to three days after the lab receives the sample.The kit with video observation, however, promises results in 24-48 hours."If that's the only thing that you're using for diagnosis and you have symptoms, you need to be isolated in your home until those results come back," Hawkinson added.In his opinion, it's not the most efficient way to get tested once the shipping time and wait for results are factored into the equation.However, Hawkinson believes we may see more options like this in the future."The technology is out there. It is progressing quickly," he said. (KGTV) - San Diego Sheriff's deputies are investigating a possible threat against Julian High School Friday.Deputies contacted the student suspected of issuing the threat off-campus, according to Julian Union High School District Superintendent Patrick Hefflin.
