SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Zoo Safari Park's youngest southern white rhino began integrating with the rest of the park's rhino herd Wednesday, meeting a rhino other than his mother for the first time since his birth 10 weeks ago.Edward and his mother, Victoria, have remained sequestered from the rest of the herd since his birth in July to allow the two to bond and ensure he builds weight and stamina. The calf's weight has nearly quadrupled since then and he has only entered the Safari Park's rhino enclosure with Victoria.Edward met Helene, an adult female southern white rhino, after she sparred with Victoria, who was very protective of her calf, according to the zoo's animal care staff. "It's time to get Edward acclimated to his crash. We chose to have Helene meet him first, as she is closely bonded with Victoria."Edward is the 99th southern white rhino calf born at the Safari Park and the first such calf to be born through artificial insemination in North America. His birth represents a step toward the zoo's longer-term goal of recovering the northern white rhino, a distant relative of the southern white rhino. Only two northern white rhinos still exist on the planet and both are female.Zoo officials plan to use stem cells and preserved northern white rhino cells to birth a northern white rhino calf within 10-20 years. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two San Diego City Council members called Wednesday on California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and District Attorney Summer Stephan to investigate San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott's possible role in an alleged child sexual abuse cover-up at the San Diego Junior Theatre.Council members Scott Sherman and Vivian Moreno sent a jointly written letter to Becerra and Stephan imploring them to investigate allegations made by attorney Matt Valenti that Elliott improperly shared information on the case with then-Junior Theatre Board member Gil Cabrera, who Valenti claims tried to silence the case's whistleblowers."We are writing to respectfully request your respective offices' review and consideration for appropriate action, as the authority to investigate these complaints falls under the jurisdiction of your departments," their letter states. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A family from Chula Vista is desperately looking for their 9-year-old loved one. Erik Ochoa was swept away by the current in Rosarito on Easter Sunday. Ochoa lives in Tijuana with his father. His sisters, Zusel and Hilary live in Chula Vista. The boy was with two other children walking along the beach in Rosarito when they were swept away. One boy made it out of the current and ran to get an adult nearby. The third child washed ashore, lifeless, 25-minutes after going missing. Erik hasn't been seen since. The sisters have been looking for their brother since they heard about what happened. They've been going from Imperial Beach all the way down to Border Field State Park.The Mexican Navy is actively searching on the Mexican side. The U.S. Coast Guard broadcast a message to boaters telling them to be on the lookout. Erik was last seen wearing green shorts and a striped shirt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Clairemont man convicted of stabbing his mother to death was sentenced to 26 years to life in prison Friday.Joseph Robert Burks, 31, was convicted in June of first-degree murder in the July 24, 2017, slaying of his 58-year-old mother, Angela Burks, who was a longtime Otay Ranch High School science teacher.Police say Burks used a stun gun to incapacitate his mother, before stabbing her more than 20 times in the head, neck, and throat at the home they shared.RELATED: 499

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A BB gun shooting spree has neighbors frightened Sunday after more than a dozen incidents across San Diego.At the corner of L Street and Sixth Avenue a woman was shot in the arm overnight, according to San Diego Police. She was walking in a small group and one of the men was an exhibitor at Comic Con, staying at the Omni Hotel, where they were headed before the shooting. That man, Sal Abbinanti, said "The girl I was with said a guy in a white car in the back seat, she heard a trigger sound and then she's like oh I think I just got shot which kinda got out attention and then we saw it was bruised and bleeding and it looked like a BB." "There's just so much security down here, so many San Diego police down here. I was surprised that this guy was dumb and brazen to do something like that," he said the hotel provided excellent care to his friend.Over in National City and Paradise Hills, at least a dozen cars were hit.Coronado Police say at least 11 businesses were hit.Downtown, police reported four more instances of people being shot at or hit by BB guns.The rash of crimes comes after 10News reported more than a dozen businesses and car windows busted by BBs in the past month:June 24th – Numerous vehicle windows were vandalized in the Point Loma, Ocean Beach and Mission Hills neighborhoods.July 1st and July 2nd - Three businesses in the Hillcrest neighborhood were vandalized.July 2nd - Two businesses in the Park West neighborhood were vandalized.July 2nd and July 3rd – Numerous vehicle windows were vandalized in the Clairemont neighborhood.July 6th - Three businesses and one vehicle were vandalized in the Midway area. A dark colored SUV is suspected in these cases.July 7th - Five businesses in the College area were vandalized.July 8th - One home in the Lake Murray neighborhood was vandalized.According to California law, negligent discharge of a BB gun resulting in injury could mean up to a year in jail.Police from the corresponding agencies are working on these cases.
