SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diegans looking to switch careers or get back to work after coronavirus-caused layoffs have a way to get free job training this summer.San Diego Continuing Education is offering free classes in 75 different areas, many of which are focused on high-demand jobs."During difficult economic times that we are about to enter, short term intensive career education is the way to get America back to work," said SDCE President Dr. Carlos Turner Cortez.Anyone in San Diego is eligible to take the classes. SDCE offers training certificates in healthcare, welding, information technology, cybersecurity, culinary arts, clothing, automotives, and more.For Richard Sanchez, who lost his job during the pandemic, it's a chance to start over after a layoff."I'm already 38 years old," Sanchez said. "To have this opportunity helps people out to get a new job and change your career."According to a recent report by SANDAG, around 460,000 people in San Diego have lost their jobs since March 7. The report says unemployment could be as high as 30%.Dr. Cortez said people who are looking for a job should look into continuing education first."It's incumbent on us to make sure that students who are coming through our program are developing the skills necessary to be successful in these career pathways," he said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Gas & Electric is warning customers of a scam in which people are getting phone calls and emails saying they owe hundreds of dollars for a new electrical meter.San Diego resident Maria Genova almost fell victim to the scam."It was very elaborate, very credible, very persistent and very convincing," she said.Genova showed 10News an email she received, and Iit had the SDG&E logo and even a QR code. The email said she owed 8.63 for a meter upgrade and if she didn't pay it, her service would be suspended.It also promised hundreds of dollars of other fees for removal, locksmith services and more.Genova also got a pair of phone calls about the issue, which had her convinced that it was legitimate."I was about ready to pay," said Genova. "I had my credit card in hand. But as soon as he said I had to pay cash, I knew there was something wrong."Genova called SDG&E, and Tthey told her the email and phone calls were not from the company.In a statement, SDG&E told 10News that they will never charge customers to replace a smart electric meter and that if they need to do any maintenance on a meter, technicians will contact the resident before doing any work.SDG&E said they've received reports of more than 13,600 scam phone calls already in 2019. It's something they constantly monitor, and they have a page on their website dedicated to helping people identify and avoid scams.Genova said she's glad she didn't lose any money and hopes other people can learn from her close call."Ask questions if you have any doubt," she said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Congresswoman Susan Davis wants the Navy to analyze whether there is a national security threat related to sewage spills along the US-Mexico border.The military is set to build a billion Navy SEAL training facility near Imperial Beach. The area has experienced 160 days of sewage spill closures to parts of its shoreline over the past three years, Davis reports.Davis wants a Navy assessment of how construction and future training at the site could be affected by the spills. “We need a whole of government solution to the sewage spills,” said Davis. “We know the environmental and economic impact these spills have. What we don’t know, with the Navy planning to stage training operations in potentially contaminated waters, are the national security concerns. The Navy should take a look at this and coordinate with relevant agencies to assess what can be done to prevent future spills.”Davis, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, wants to include language in this year’s defense bill to get a report from the Navy on the matter.“The Navy’s coastal campus will be vital for national security,” Davis said. “The last thing we want is our elite Navy SEALs training in water contaminated with sewage. Gavin Newsom discount coronavirus cases in San Diego State students from the county's case rate.Supervisor Greg Cox said the county will send a letter to the governor formally asking that the state not include SDSU's case numbers in the county's total coronavirus case rate.Gov. Newsom said during a press conference Wednesday that he will not allow San Diego County to do that."You can't isolate, as if it's on an island, the campus community that is part of a larger community. So the answer is no," Newsom said in regards to whether he would consider a special exemption for the county.RELATED: San Diego County could backslide to more coronavirus-related restrictionsTuesday, County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said during a Board of Supervisors meeting that if the campus' cases were removed from the equation, the county's case rate would be lower.As of Monday, SDSU reported 667 confirmed cases and nine probable cases.According to county Medical Director Dr. Eric McDonald, less than 10 coronavirus cases have been directly linked to the campus. Of those, McDonald said three cases are county residents with direct connections with SDSU students and four non-county residents with direct connections to students.McDonald added that the county is aware of four residential outbreaks related to SDSU students in the College Area, but there have not been any other outbreaks in other settings related to students."The reality is, the number of cases in ICU and hospitalizations is not being impacted because of those cases from SDSU," Cox said. To move forward, a county must meet the next tier’s criteria for two consecutive weeks. If a county’s metrics worsen for two consecutive weeks, it will be assigned a more restrictive tier," the state's website says.If San Diego is required to move back to California's first business reopening tier, businesses would need to adjust to more restrictive capacity levels.
