NEW YORK, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- A video show about Chinese people made its debut on screens at Times Square on Monday, presenting Americans a multi-dimensional and vivid image of Chinese people.With China's traditional red as the theme color, the 60-second video was shown on six screens simultaneously at Times Square with a billboard written "Experience China" on top of the screens. The show highlights Chinese ordinary people and some important figures recognized by the international community, including Chinese pianist Lang Lang, basketball player Yao Ming and Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei, etc."The layout of the video is quite smart. I like it," Charlotte Mcguckin, 18, a high school student in New York, told Xinhua, adding that "everyone (in the video) looks happy.""Look, that's Yao Ming. I can recognize him, and also the female table tennis player standing beside him. She is very famous, " she said, pointing to the giant screen. "I learned in class that U.S. and China started diplomatic ties from playing the table tennis," she smiled.For Si Yaqin, who came to New York with her son for vacation, watching the debut of the video is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "It's my first time to New York, first time to Times Square," she told Xinhua. "How lucky I am here to witness this moment. I feel so proud as a Chinese."The video is part of the public diplomacy campaign by the Chinese government ahead of Chinese President Hu Jintao's U.S. state visit. The video will be shown at Times Square 15 times every hour from 6 am to 2 am next day, totaling 20 hours and 300 times a day. BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) - Offenders of China's new regulations on waste electronic equipment could face fines up to 500,000 yuan (75,450 U.S. dollar), after it becomes effective on Saturday.The regulations could be regarded as the country's latest effort to promote comprehensive utilization of resources and environmentally friendly economy, Wan Bentai, chief engineer of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, said Tuesday.The ministry has introduced a set of supplementary guidelines for the implementation, which, for example, specify rules and procedures regarding issues including recyclers' qualification and governmental subsidies to e-waste recycling initiatives, Wan said.Recyclers which engage in e-waste recycling business without certificates could face fines ranging from 50,000 yuan to 500,000 yuan, according to the regulation.Wan estimated that nearly 30 million units of televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and computers were discarded in China each year.Those e-wastes, sometimes simply burned or soaked in strong acid, had severely polluted the environment in many locations in the past, said Wan.He believed that the new regulation made "remarkable progress" in environmental protection by extending manufacturers' responsibility into the post-use recycling of their products.

MOSCOW, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Representatives and financial institutions from China and Russia on Wednesday signed 13 agreements worth eight billion U.S. dollars.Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Zhukov, the two chairmen from each side of the Joint Commission for China-Russia Regular Meetings of Heads of Government, attended the signing ceremony held at the fifth China-Russia economic and trade summit forum.Among the deals were two financial agreements worth 236 million dollars, 10 cooperative agreements on economy and technology totalling 5.3 billion dollars, and one trade agreement worth around 320 million dollars.The agreements covered a wide range of areas including commercial trade, investment, mining, manufacturing, construction and telecommunications equipment.The signing of the 13 agreements has fully demonstrated the continuous deepening and broadening economic cooperation between the enterprises of China and Russia, thanks to the efforts of the governments of the two countries.
