One California family narrowly survived two life-threatening situations less than 24 hours apart, but they just feel lucky to be alive.Carmen Edman described her harrowing escape from Malibu on November 8 as her family home was destroyed by wildfire."The fire was everywhere, " Carmen told CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS.The frantic moments came just a day after her daughter, Deseriee, survived a deadly mass shooting at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, when a gunman burst into the bar with a handgun on November 7. By the time the gunfire stopped, 12 people were dead."I was in panic mode since Wednesday night -- since that phone call -- and stress levels were off the charts," Carmen Edman said.The Edman family got to safety, but their Malibu home burned to the ground."Two-near death experiences that you just don't expect," Deseriee Edman said."I'm trying to stay as strong as possible for my family and friends, and I'm trying to look at everything as positively as possible even though it's pretty hard to do so in these type of situations," she told the affiliate.The Edmans credit Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus with saving their family.Sgt. Helus was fatally shot when he responded to the call of a shooting at the Borderline Bar and Grill. OCEAN BEACH (KGTV) - People in Ocean Beach have hatched a (not-so) secret plan to bring a popular mermaid statue back to town."We’re go-getters. We’re not going to give in. This is going to be a mission," says Claudia Jack, the self-proclaimed leader of Team Mermaid.For three weeks in May and June, a mermaid statue sat atop Ross Rock near Sunset Cliffs. Nicknamed 'Marina', the statue brought tourists and locals to the area to take pictures.For some, it was a nuisance, bringing more traffic and trash. Jack says that's one reason they don't plan to put the mermaid back on the rock."It's my goal to get her repaired and put her somewhere that she'll be appreciated," she says.The mermaid was secretly removed in June by a group calling themselves the Cliffs Crew. For a while, no one knew what had happened to it. Jack says she knows where Marina is located but won't reveal her location."I have not revealed any names or whatever," she says. "It's very hush-hush. But it will come out in the end. In a happy way."Jack has enlisted the help of a few friends and artists to repair some minor damage to Marina. She's also trying to get the entire community involved. Earlier this month, she sent out 300 postcards with a picture of the mermaid on the front. The back simply read "Save the OB Mermaid" and had an email address.She says the response has been overwhelming."What little girl doesn't want to be a mermaid?" she asks.Jack plans to unveil Marina as a statue at the Ocean Beach Holiday Parade in December. After that, she plans to let local businesses bid for the rights to host the statue for a few months at a time. The order stops the Census Bureau from winding down operations until a court hearing is held on Sept. 17. The head count of every U.S. resident every ten years helps determine how .5 trillion in federal funding is distributed and how many congressional seats each state gets. Those who have not filled out the paper census yet can fill it out online by going to the official census 2020 website. The temporary restraining order was requested by a coalition of cities, counties and civil rights groups that had sued the Census Bureau, demanding it restore its previous plan for finishing the census at the end of October, instead of using a revised plan to end operations at the end of September. The coalition had argued the earlier deadline would cause the Census Bureau to overlook minority communities in the census, leading to an inaccurate count.Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Census Bureau pushed back ending the count from the end of July to the end of October and asked Congress to extend the deadline for turning in the apportionment numbers from December, as required by law, into next spring.
