SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and elements of the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group deployed from San Diego Monday in support of global maritime security operations, Navy officials announced.Prior to departing, the strike group completed a composite training unit exercise called COMPTUEX, which is designed to fully integrate units of a carrier strike group while testing its ability as a whole to carry out sustained combat operations from the sea.Ships, squadrons and staffs have been tested across every core warfare area within their mission sets through a variety of simulated and live events, including air warfare, strait transits, and responses to surface and subsurface contacts and electronic attacks, according to U.S. Third Fleet public affairs."The carrier strike group team is trained and ready," said Rear Adm. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously Monday to amend an agreement between former Mayor Bob Filner and the developer Carmel Partners over the development of an apartment complex that drew criticism.The development's current owner, Trea Blvd63, LLC, sought to nullify the agreement, which required the development's owner to rent apartments to tenants by the room rather than by the bed. When it was being built in 2013, opponents of the apartment complex argued that it more closely resembled a dormitory rather than the luxury units it was billed as.``I applaud my council colleagues for correcting these corrupt mistakes of the past, and moving forward from Filner's blatant misuse of power,'' Sherman said. ``This is a good reminder that big problems happen when elected officials abuse the power of their office.''Carmel Partners began work on the CentrePoint apartment complex, located in Rolando, in 2013. The city ordered the stoppage of construction of the complex, citing the need for additional construction permits. According to City Councilman Scott Sherman's office, Filner also ordered San Diego's Development Services Department to not conduct inspections on the development's completed phases, keeping construction workers from continuing with the project.At the same time, the Rolando Community Council demanded that the CentrePoint project, and the developers of any other new projects in the area, pay for improvements to the neighborhood. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Sunday identified a 24-year-old man who was fatally wounded in a shooting in Emerald Hills on Wednesday.The victim was identified as Gai Wal, who died of his wounds in the early morning on Friday, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs of the San Diego Police Department.At 5:51 p.m. Wednesday, police received a ShotSpotter activation in the area of 6100 Imperial Ave. It was soon followed by a second ShotSpotter activation near 6300 Imperial Ave. The SpotShotter is a device used by police to locate and alert whenever it detects the sound of gunshots.When patrol officers arrived on the scene, they found a man down in the parking lot of a business with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper body, Dobbs said.The officers rendered aid to the man, who was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, the lieutenant said. A 32-year-old man was killed and a 37-year old man went to the hospital with a wound to the torso, according to San Diego police. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego Superior Court officials warned the public Thursday about a scam targeting the Hispanic community in which a scammer reportedly threatens to arrest people unless they pay for items they never ordered.According to court officials, a woman recently showed up at court looking for a fictional courtroom number. She had been told there would be a hearing on her refusal to pay for items the scammer said she purchased.The woman was told to either pay ,500 or be taken to court. When she came to the courthouse, the woman discovered there was no such case and the threat was a scam.When court staff dialed the phone number provided to the potential victim, the person who answered said she would only speak in Spanish.Superior Court officials are now warning vulnerable non-English speakers about the scam."It appears these scammers are targeting members of the community they believe won't go to authorities or show up at a courthouse," said Executive Officer Michael Roddy. "It appears they believe they can just take the money and no one will report them."These scams happen every year; sometimes they tell people there are charges for failing to show up for jury services or charges for clearing up arrest warrants; this time it's charges for not paying for ordered items," Roddy said. "Once again, we want the public to know the court or law enforcement will not call you with this type of issue and court will never, ever demand cash as the way to make charges go away."The public is told to simply hang up or contact law enforcement if the scammer gets aggressive. 1604
