SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council on Monday will honor area residents who assisted victims in the Las Vegas mass shooting that left 58 concert-goers dead and hundreds of others wounded.Councilwoman Lorie Zapf plans to introduce a proclamation declaring "Las Vegas Unsung Heroes Recognition Day" in San Diego.In it, she calls the Oct. 1 shooting at a country music festival "one of the most horrific events in American history" and lauds Taylor Winston, Jenn Lewis, Officer Max Verduzco, Officer Tom McGrath and his wife, Tiffany.RELATED: Brother of Las Vegas shooting victim Jennifer Irvine urges educator-only pension to divest in gunsShe said Winston -- an ex-Marine living in Ocean Beach -- and Lewis, his girlfriend, found a truck with its keys in the ignition and used it to rush about two dozen shooting victims to a hospital.Verduzco knocked over a fence, allowing the crowd to escape the scene, according to Zapf. "They humbly accept this praise, but they are quick to recognize the many unsung heroes who also stepped up to the plate to help their fellow concert-goers to safety."A spokeswoman for Zapf said the five named in the proclamation all plan to attend the event at a City Council meeting.The gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino into the crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Country Music Festival during a performance by Jason Aldean. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday that it received .5 million in federal funding to support housing vouchers to unsheltered military veterans.The county will use the ,520,346 grant to issue 175 housing vouchers to veterans throughout the county. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the grant to the county HHSA through its Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing program, which supports rental assistance, drug and alcohol counseling and financial education for veterans and their families."This grant is good news for our unsheltered veteran population," said HHSA Housing and Community Development Services Director David Estrella. "The funds will secure a stable place to live for men and women in our community that have sacrificed so much."FACING IT TOGETHER: On the edge of homelessness in San DiegoHUD also awarded a VASH grant of nearly .8 million to the San Diego Housing Commission earlier this week. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society released a series of tips to help keep pets safe this holiday season."With the bustling holiday season upon us, San Diego Humane Society reminds pet owners to consider their pets' safety when decking the halls," an SDHS release said. "Holiday decorations, seasonal plants and festive treats can sometimes be harmful for pets."Some of the tips to keep in mind this Christmas:-- Sharing holiday goodies with animals can be dangerous. Too much fatty or rich food can lead to digestive problems. Some foods, such as onions, grapes/raisins and chocolate can be toxic-- Ask guests not to share food with pets. They may mean well, but it is important to remind them of the potential dangers. Prepare sealed snack bags in advance and let guests use those treats instead of sharing from their plates-- Christmas trees can be hazardous, particularly for climbing cats, so make sure the tree is secure and preferably in a corner-- Dangling tree ornaments can seem like great toys to cats and dogs. Keep dangerous ornaments such as glass and tinsel -- which can be a choking hazard -- on high branches, out of the reach of little paws. Cords from lights should be taped down or otherwise secured to prevent pets from chewing on them-- Keep an eye on items under the tree. Don't let pets drink water from the base of a live tree as it may be stagnant and contain bacteria. Ribbons and bows can be a choking hazard and any packages filled with edible gifts are likely to be discovered-- A number of holiday season plants are toxic or can cause digestive upset to pets if nibbled or eaten, including amaryllis, Christmas cactus, Christmas rose, evergreens, holly, ivy, juniper, lilies, mistletoe and poinsettias. Be sure all plants are kept out of reach of pets-- Burning candles should be placed high, out of any pet's way. A dog's tail wag or a cat's curiosity could be devastating. Homes with fireplaces should use screens to avoid accidental burns-- Pets can get stressed with noise and activity. Give a pet a quiet, secure place with a bed and their favorite toys to escape the commotion. Put food, water and a litter box for cats in that space-- Holiday distractions may make it easier for pets to escape through open doors. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sales of previously owned single-family homes and attached properties like condominiums and townhomes increased between September and October while home prices decreased, according to data released by the Greater San Diego Association of Realtors.Sales of single-family homes increased from 1,605 in September to 1,644 in October, a 2.4 percent jump. Attached property sales rose 8.8 percent from 820 in September to 892 in October.The increases are a minor rebound after SDAR data showed sales of single-family homes and attached properties fell 25 percent from August to September.Monthly home prices dipped slightly for both single-family and attached properties. Single-family prices fell 0.4 percent from 7,000 to 5,000 while condo and townhome prices fell 2.7 percent from 9,000 to 8,000."The temperature of home prices seems to be cooling, which may lead to a period of calm for the rest of the year," SDAR President Steve Fraioli said. "However, the strength of the economy and the strong job market remains great news for buyers and industries related to real estate."Year-over-year increases show significant declines in listings sold and increases in home prices. Single-family home sales fell 16.8 percent from October 2017 to October 2018, from 1,977 to 1,644. Year-over-year condo and townhome sales fell 15.3 percent, from 1,053 to 892.Sale prices rose 6.3 percent for single-family homes, from 7,000 in October 2017 to 5,000 in October 2018. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Scorching heat is expected everywhere except the coast in San Diego County Friday and a brutal stretch of temperatures is not expected to relent until the middle of next week, according to the National Weather Service.Building high pressure over the southwestern United States will usher in scorching temperatures for the next five to six days, with the peak of the heat expected Friday through Monday, forecasters said.The NWS issued an excessive heat warning that will be in effect from noon Friday to 9 p.m. Monday in the county valleys, mountains and deserts.LATEST 10NEWS WEATHER FORECASTThe NWS urged residents to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Also, children and pets should be never be left unattended in a vehicle, with car interiors able to "reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes," according to the NWS.High temperatures Friday are forecast to reach 86 degrees near the coast, 96 inland, 100 in the western valleys, 106 near the foothills, 103 in the mountains and 120 in the deserts.Highs in the county deserts are expected to remain around 118 through Wednesday, according to the NWS. The mercury in the western valleys is forecast to top out in the low-to-mid 90s through Wednesday as well, while highs near the foothills will remain in the mid-to-high 90s through at least Thursday.Borrego Springs set a high temperature record on Thursday, according to the NWS.
