SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As San Diego County awaits guidance on the effects of its removal from the state's coronavirus watchlist, public health officials reported 291 new COVID-19 cases and eight additional deaths Saturday, raising the region's totals to 36,203 cases and 660 deaths.Four women and four men died, officials said Saturday. Their ages ranged from mid-40s to mid-90s. All had underlying medical conditions.The county was officially removed from the state's monitoring list Tuesday, setting in motion a 14-day countdown that could see K-12 students back in the classroom as soon as Sept. 1, depending on the decisions of individual school districts.However, 27 schools -- mostly private, religious schools -- have been approved for in-person learning by the county.The schools include Calvary Christian Academy, Francis Parker School, Chabad Hebrew Academy, San Diego French American School, La Jolla Country Day School and others. They were among nearly 50 schools that applied for a waiver to the county's public health guideline regarding in-person teaching.Of the 8,824 tests reported Friday, 3% returned positive, bringing the 14-day rolling average to 3.6%, well below the state's 8% guideline. The 7- day rolling average of tests is 7,292 daily.Of the total positive cases in the county, 2,961 -- or 8.2% -- have required hospitalization since the pandemic began, and 728 -- or 2% -- were admitted to an intensive care unit.County health officials reported no new community outbreaks as of Friday, bringing the number of outbreaks in the past week to 17.The number of community outbreaks remains well above the county's goal of fewer than seven in a seven-day span. A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households in the past 14 days.County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said he and other county officials were expecting to hear about the framework for reopening indoor businesses from the state next week."That doesn't mean we'll be able to open everything all at once," he said Wednesday. "We must be mindful. We don't want to undo the progress we've made so far."The county continued to make progress Saturday, with a case rate of 81.8 positive COVID-19 tests per 100,000 people, below the state's 100 per 100,000 guideline.The county will be placed back on the list should it be flagged for exceeding any one of six different metrics for three consecutive days. Those metrics are the case rate, the percentage of positive tests, the average number of tests a county is able to perform daily, changes in the number of hospitalized patients and the percentage of ventilators and intensive care beds available.On Monday, county-compiled data related to race and ethnicity on testing, staffing and geographic location will be made available for the first time. Previously, data on race had been broken down by deaths, hospitalizations and case numbers only.Latinos are still disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, with that ethnic group representing 61.7% of all hospitalizations and 46% of all deaths due to the illness. Latinos make up about 35% of San Diego County's population.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's chief health officer, revealed a five-tiered testing priority protocol Wednesday that the county has been using. In the top two tiers were symptomatic people separated by risk factors, followed by two tiers of asymptomatic people and finally by a general public health surveillance tier. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man who mailed more than four pounds of pure methamphetamine to Guam inside stuffed animals and had more than 500 counterfeit credit cards in his possession was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Thursday.Daniel Wayne Gorman, 33, pleaded guilty to sending four packages from a Jamul post office in 2016, each containing a stuffed animal filled with methamphetamine, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.The packages were mailed under the alias "Daniel German" and were intercepted in Barrigada, Guam, prosecutors said.He was sentenced Monday to 10 years for his plea to distribution of methamphetamine and five years for possession of counterfeit access devices stemming from fake credit cards and driver's licenses discovered at his home during a 2018 police search.Investigators found more than 500 counterfeit cards, along with "multiple fake Florida driver's licenses bearing the defendant's photograph but the personal identifying information of others," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Many of the credit cards also bore the names of real individuals who were not Gorman, prosecutors said. 1187

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect in a series of residential burglaries and auto thefts in El Cajon was arrested Thursday.Davon Lee, 20, was driving a vehicle stolen during one of the home- invasion thefts when San Diego police took him into custody Thursday afternoon, El Cajon police Lt. Kevin MacArthur said.Lee, an El Cajon resident, is suspected of committing seven burglaries in the East County city in recent weeks.In each case, the intruder entered an occupied home through an open door or window, located car keys inside and then stole a vehicle from the premises, MacArthur said. 591

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A jury Monday began deliberating the fate of a man accused of fatally beating a senior citizen and going on a shopping spree with the victim's credit cards nearly two decades ago.Prosecutor Christina Arrollado asked jurors to find 39-year-old Edward Jamar Brooks guilty of first-degree murder.The 71-year-old victim, LeRay Parkins, was found in an alley off the 3700 block of 28th Street on Aug. 23, 2000. He died at a hospital three days later of injuries that included two skull fractures and brain bleeding.According to prosecutors, Parkins was out on a morning walk when he encountered Brooks and co-defendant Lester Bell.Brooks allegedly struck Parkins in the head with a bat, then rifled through the victim's pockets and took his wallet. Purchases were made with Perkins' credit card less than two hours later at a Spring Valley gas station and an Escondido clothing store, according to the District Attorney's Office.A baseball bat was later found at a Spring Valley home frequented by Bell and the getaway driver, Terrence Maurice Brown, but authorities lacked sufficient evidence at the time to arrest the trio for the murder, according to previous court testimony.The three were arrested in different states last summer: Brooks in North Carolina, Bell in Colorado and Brown in Arizona. Brown, 38, recently pleaded guilty to a robbery charge, while Bell, 39, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Both men have yet to be sentenced.Brooks "took a baseball bat to the (victim's) skull," and his DNA was found on the victim's short pockets, Arrollado alleged in her closing argument.She said Parkins was a senior on his morning walk to stay healthy, and claims that he was "willing to get into a full-blown fight" with the defendants are false."Instead of coming home healthy and more vibrant, (Parkins) lay dying in alley, choking on this own blood," she told jurors.Arrollado also dismissed claims by Brooks' attorney, Robert Ford, that Bell and Brown were the real culprits who conspired against Brooks."If this is a frame-up job, it's the worst frame-up job in history," the deputy district attorney said. "These three set out looking for victims."Ford countered that if three people are involved in such a crime, accomplices "will say anything to save their own skin -- don't convict Mr. Brooks unless it's based on evidence." That evidence, Ford said, would include DNA on the baseball bat.Brooks admits to taking Parkins' wallet, and DNA evidence supports a robbery -- but not murder, the defense attorney said. Ford said Parkins deserves justice, but the DA's office "cannot prove any malice in the heart of Mr. Brooks.""I hope and pray that each and every one of you will agree on one theory, and that he's not guilty," Ford told jurors. "If he's an innocent man, he should be able to walk out that door."Ford has alleged that Brown actually beat Parkins with the bat and that he and Bell -- two "lifelong friends" who grew up in North Park together -- conspired to blame Brooks, the "odd man out."Ford earlier told jurors that as the three defendants prepared to leave, Brown got into a fistfight with Parkins, which the victim was winning, despite being much older than Brown.
