A teacher in Kansas who just wanted to keep track of schools closing this fall because of COVID-19 cases, has created a nationwide database to help parents and educators.Alisha Morris teaches in Kansas’ Olathe School District and as she prepared for this fall, began looking into how other districts and schools were handling the first few weeks of class.“I was seeing a lot of articles about schools that were opening up and issues already happening on Day 1,” Morris, 29, said. “I thought, 'Wow!' Maybe these are a lot of repeat articles, and I’m just seeing the same thing over and over. Surely, there can’t be that many already,’” Morris told MyCentralJersey.com.She started keeping track of articles and COVID-19 cases and closures at schools in a Google spreadsheet. She shared it with colleagues and friends, then with her school district’s board of education.“The response I received was astronomical,” Morris said.As word spread about the database, more submissions came in. There are more than 700 entries for more than 40 states. Morris has set up a way for people to submit cases and school closures through her spreadsheet.Morris hopes to transition to a new system soon, with help from volunteers.“When I first created this spreadsheet, I had no idea that it was going to become such a big thing. A study published this week takes a look at just how quickly Covid-19 test results are getting back, on average.Researchers surveyed more than 19,000 people across every state and the District of Columbia during the last two weeks of July. They asked how long people waited to get back test results.Most people, about 63 percent, are not getting their test results back within the one-to-two day window that is optimal for contact tracing.More than 30 percent of survey participants reported they received test results after four or more days.“Rapid turnaround of testing for COVID-19 infection is essential to containing the pandemic. Ideally, test results would be available the same day. Our findings indicate that the United States is not currently performing testing with nearly enough speed,” researchers said in the report of their findings.The average wait time nationwide was 4.1 days.However, there were disparities in wait times when looking at race. According to the study, Covid-19 test results wait times for Hispanics and Blacks are longer, at 4.6 days and 5 days respectively. Compared to wait times for white respondents, which was 3.9 days according to the study.Researchers said there is little sign the wait time for test results is speeding up. A similar survey conducted in April found that the national average wait time was 4.2 days.This study did not look into the causes of the delay in receiving test results. Other reporting has pointed to limited testing supplies, labs being overwhelmed with tests to run, and the time needed to contact everyone with results.On Monday, Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis called some Covid-19 test results “useless” because they are taking too long to come back. A new study has found that those who drink moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who didn’t, reports the Chicago Tribune.The research was led by University of California neurologist Claudia Kawas who tracked 1,700 nonagenarians enrolled in the 90+ study, which began in 2003.According to researchers, those who drank roughly two glasses of beer or wine a day were 18 percent less likely to experience premature death.The findings mean that, according to the research, drinking alcohol increased longevity more than exercise.The study found that participants who exercised 15 to 45 minutes a day cut their risk of early death by 11 percent.And good news for coffee lovers. Participants who drank two cups of coffee a day also increased longevity by 10 percent.The study also found that people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than normal or underweight people. 904

A new study about video gamers pretty much shatters the stereotype many people have about them.Researchers at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia conducted what they say is the first study on body mass index from a worldwide sample of e-sports players. What they found surprised even them.“When we went into the study, we were kind of expecting that the gamers would have a much higher BMI than the general population, but what we found was the complete opposite. We found that players tended to have up to 21% more likelihood of being a normal weight,” said lead researcher Michael Trotter.The study included hundreds of participants from 65 countries. It showed gamers were between 9% and 21% more likely to be a healthy weight. Players also drank less and smoked less than the general population.Trotter started the university's e-sports program before he started studying for his PhD. He says he was surprised that serious players focused on their health almost as much as their playing. He says players requested a personal trainer, a dietician, and a sports psychologist.The study also found the healthier players were the better players.“We found that the players who were in the top 10% of all players and we measured up to 2.5 thousand players, it wasn't a small study. We found the top 10% of all players were exercising significantly more than their lower ranked counterparts,” said Trotter.Trotter says the growth of e-sports is huge and future programs will need to look at this study and realize they must focus on the health of players.He also says future research will need to be done on the overall health of e-sports players, such as muscle mass and bone density. 1706

A Utah man died flying a Cessna 535 citation jet into his home, where his wife and her son were, early Monday, hours after he was arrested for domestic violence, police said.The incident began at American Fork Canyon, about 35 miles south of Salt Lake City, when the Utah County Sheriff's Office received calls about a domestic violence situation between Duane Youd and his wife on Sunday night, according to Payson Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. Noemi Sandoval."They had been drinking and an argument broke out and he started hitting her and some witnesses called in to police to say a guy was hitting a woman," Sandoval said on Monday.Youd was arrested and was bailed out Monday morning between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m., Sandoval said. When Youd asked if he could go back to his home and pick up some belongings, he was escorted by an officer and left the home in his vehicle, police said."He then evidently went to the airplane" after leaving his home, Sandoval said.Around 2:30 a.m., Payson authorities received a call that a plane had crashed into Youd's home.Youd was a professional pilot, Sandoval said. He flew for VanCon, a construction company that owned the plane. Youd was the only person who flew it, Sandoval said.Youd's wife and her son were in the home at the time of the crash, but were able to escape Sandoval said.Neighbors who saw the crash said they couldn't believe it.
