Barry Peterson and his wife, Jan, were looking forward to forever. The married journalists were living and working in Asia, until Jan's diagnosis with Alzheimer’s at age 55 cut their forever short. “The hardest thing was watching her disappear a little more,” Barry says. They discussed what Barry’s life might look like without her. “She was very adamant that if something happened to her, which I didn't think was going to happen, that I should go on and have the rest of my life,” he says. CBS Sunday Morning captured video of the couple when Jan moved into assisted living. “I do love him, and just couldn't do without him,” Jan said in the video. Barry was alone, and he had to make a difficult decision. “I really felt that for my survival, my sanity, my desire to have conversations with someone that really understood the process, that I needed to reach out and I did,” Barry says.That’s when Barry met Mary Nell Wolff. Friends encouraged Mary to go on Match.com. She says she later got a message from Barry, who shared his story about his wife's illness. “It just broke my heart,” Mary Nell recalls.Mary Nell had suffered her own tragedy, losing her husband in a bicycle accident. After writing and talking on the phone for a year, she and Barry met in person, and eventually moved in together. With Barry traveling the world for work, Mary Nell took on caregiving responsibilities for Jan. “I felt at peace the moment that Jan and Mary Nell bonded,” Barry says. They called themselves a family of three. “I didn't not love Jan, and I was not going to in any way abandon her, but I loved Mary Nell at the same time,” he explains. “And Mary now loved me, and Mary Nell loved Jan.”Barry shared his experience in his book called “Jan's Story.” He received some criticism, much like the husband of B. Smith--an iconic model and restaurateur who lives with Alzheimer’s—did. B. Smith’s husband, Dan, sent shock waves through social media when he revealed he has a live-in girlfriend while also caring for his wife. “If you're not in it, then you have no right to judge people who are in it,” Barry says. Amelia Schaffer with the Colorado Alzheimer’s Association says Barry and Dan’s stories are really about the importance of early detection and outlining your wishes while you can. “The biggest barrier to having conversations early is that people don't recognize they're dealing with Alzheimer’s,” Schaffer says.Jan passed away in 2013. Barry says if you can understand the love he shared with her and Mary Nell, “then you have understood the matrix of what love is like with Alzheimer’s for people who just want to survive.” 2649

They said they are hopeful to find additional remains. Researchers added that this big discovery gives them a better understanding of where to find more remains.Mayor G.T. Bynum said he is grateful for the experts who located the remains. I am very grateful to have the foremost experts in the country working to locate the remains of victims from the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Today, our research team found an unmarked grave in an area previously identified through geophysical survey work. The next step will be to identify if the remains are associated with the Tulsa Race Massacre. This will be done through forensic analysis of the remains, and by comparing them with funeral home and death certificate records. We will continue to take this investigation one step at a time, wherever it may lead. Tulsa Mayor G.T. That investigation began in 2020 with crews conducting their search along the western edge of the cemetery. Archaeologists conducted extensive test excavations and concluded with no evidence of human remains.However, the search could continue beyond Oaklawn Cemetery. Researchers said several areas are still candidates for possible mass grave sites related to the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. BALTIMORE, Md. – In looking for creative inspiration, engineering student Qiyuan Fu finds it in a box, with an interesting occupant. Inside: a real, live snake. “We can definitely learn something from them,” Fu said. The snake is a Kingsnake, which is native to deserts in California and Mexico and serves as the model for a new robot, developed in a mechanical engineering lab at Johns Hopkins University. “We added this one directional wheel, so it can only rotate in one direction,” said Fu, as he demonstrated how the robot moves. The “snake robot,” and its colleague, the “roach robot,” are so-called “bio-inspired robots” – taking their cues from mother nature. “We studied snakes here because they are exceptionally good at moving through almost any terrain,” said Johns Hopkins assistant professor Chen Li. Li said it’s an idea with practical applications: the robots could potentially help in search and rescue, by making their way through tight spaces to find people trapped in rubble. “People have actually tried to build snake robots for several decades,” he said. In the past, though, the robots fell short once they left the lab environments, unable to make it through different types of terrain. This time – using specially positioned cameras – they’ve observed how the snakes and roaches move across different surfaces and attempted to mimic what nature already does so well. “What's really unique about our work is that we focus on understanding the physical principles – starting by looking at animals,” Li said. “And then by understanding such principles, we can apply them to the to the robot.” The snakes have 200 vertebrae; the snake robot has 20 segments. It’s progress, these engineers say, with more to go. “There’s still going to be a lot of challenges ahead,” Li said.The engineering lab is now looking into modeling robots based on lizards. That’s because of their ability to leap across surfaces, which could further help robots make their way across uneven terrain. 2008

  

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After tornadoes ripped through parts of Nashville, Tennessee, a strong group of black men is taking steps to rebuild a community. “Nashville strong,” said Demetrius Short, captain of the Nashville chapter of Black Men Run – a brotherhood inspired through health and wellness that has thousands of members and dozens of chapters across the country. “Two days a week we come out and put all our stress and anxiety under our feet,” Short said. This group of African American men is helping their community from ground zero. “We want you to be to be encouraged about your educational success but also as men of color and men in general we want you to know about your health,” Short said. Short and other members of BMR go to local elementary schools to help inspire students. It's part of the group’s Black Men Run, Brown Boys Read program. The most recent lesson was all about helping these children deal with their emotions following the destruction the deadly tornadoes left behind. “Some people just don’t have anything,” said third grader Tyler Hanserd. “They don’t have electricity a roof over their heads they don’t even have a house.” Judging from the support, these sessions seem to be working well. “I love what black me run do with our boys their excited,” said Myra Taylor, the executive principal at Buena Vista Elementary School in north Nashville. Taylor says BMR gives her students strong black men to look up to. “It helps our kids release some of the anxiety,” she said. “A lot of them lost homes, they lost items, they lost clothes, but they come back and we’re all here and that matters to our kids.” That includes kids like Hanserd, whose family lost power for a week following the tornado. “People lost their lives and people don’t have shelter, they don’t have food and they don’t have water,” he said. “So, that’s not cool.” BMR leaders say mentoring youth is directly connected to fostering community awareness. “Our motto here is, ‘We don’t run through our community, we run with it,’” short said. Short added that it’s important to teach children that they don’t have to wait until they’re older to make a difference, but that they can make an impact on their communities today. “We’re teaching them about perseverance, determination, overcoming obstacles so they don’t quit on mile one they don’t quit on mile two or mile three,” he said. “They come across the finish line.”For BMR, there’s no quitting physically, emotionally or spiritually. Members are helping historic black churches by donating supplies and cleaning up the damage. “This is the devastation of the tornado that hit Nashville,” Bishop Marcus Campbell of Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist church said while pointing out damage and debris. Campbell added that BMR has helped at a higher level. “It touched my heart to see there’s still humanity that still cares for one another,” he said. “I know that we are better together and we are going to be better than what we was before the all this had taken place.”Because BMR is Nashville strong and Tennessee tough, the group is ready to run down that long road of recovery for as long as it takes. 3172

  

TAMPA, Fla. — The Tampa Bay area is known for its crystal clear beaches and white sand.Many people see the saltwater as a place to relax and kick back, but Dr. Serene Al-Momen sees it as a vast area of opportunity to stop the spread of the coronavirus.Specifically with what lies under the surface."The jellyfish is the component of the sensor that basically makes the cell emit light when a pathogen from the air is connected to it or binds to it," Dr. Al-Momen said.Dr. Al-Momen is the CEO of the company Senseware. She said the jellyfish is helping her team identify the coronavirus in the air.Her team works to find what's in the air behind the scenes. They do it with a sensor box not much bigger than an Amazon Echo at home.The sensor can detect pathogens in the air like Ecoli, SARS and anthrax.In March, they shifted gears in what type of pathogen they wanted to find."We took what we had and we kind of improved on it to really meet the challenges of today with COVID," Dr. Al-Momen said.The sensor can count particles down to the smallest micron that the common eye would never catch.To detect the coronavirus, they made adjustments."For COVID, we have the SARS code 2 antibody in that cell. So, what happens is when we get the sample of the air and the sensor gets the sample of the air there is a pathogen that binds into the cell and connects to it it will emit light," Dr. Al-Momen said.To help identify pathogens scientists use a luminescent component from a jellyfish; something that is nothing new when working to identify viruses and diseases."This particular methodology was created in the early 2000s by the MIT Lincoln Labs to specifically identify anthrax threats when anthrax was an issue," Dr. Al-Momen said.The jellyfish's protein helps light up a cell when a pathogen from the air is connected to or binds to it.The team then uses sophisticated algorithms that measure the intensity of the light that can determine whether it's positive or negative.The sensors cost tens of thousands of dollars and are geared towards larger corporations such as hospitals and senior care facilities.Senseware is currently in the Beta testing phase and they hope to offer the machine commercially by November.For more information about Senseware, visit their website.
