PIRAEUS, Greece, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese naval escort warships arrived in Greece's Piraeus Port on Monday, kicking off a five-day visit.The vessels, destroyer Guangzhou and frigate Chaohu, are part of the fifth Chinese naval escort flotilla, which just completed the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to protect commercial ships from pirate attacks.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan and some 200 Chinese nationals came to the port to welcome the arrival of the two Chinese warships. Waving Chinese and Greek national flags, the enthusiastic Chinese living in Greece greeted the Chinese sailors with cheers.They were excited when allowed to tour one of the ships."We are so excited to have a chance to board a Chinese naval destroyer," Wu Hailong, a Chinese businessman in Athens, said, adding that he and his friends come to Piraeus early in the morning from central Athens to welcome the Chinese navy soldiers.Zhang Buren, a Chinese national from Taiwan who has lived in Athens for more than three decades, said he was very impressed by the elegant demeanor of Chinese navy soldiers. "I feel very much proud as a Chinese and so happy to see China is developing fast."At a welcoming ceremony held at the port, the Chinese ambassador said the Chinese navy has made its effort in fighting piracy. "The Chinese naval escort flotilla has successfully escorted some 20 Greek commercial vessels in the waters near Somalia in the past few years," he said. Greece is one of the countries with biggest commercial fleets.The Chinese envoy added that the Greek government and Greek Navy attach great importance to the visit by the Chinese naval fleet. BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April.The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said.The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said.The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.

BEIJING, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang Friday urged increased supervision of police investigations and the reform of the penal system.Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while attending a plenary meeting of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee in Beijing.Representatives of the Supreme People's Procuratorate reported to the meeting on their work to strengthen supervision on the use of investigative measures such as search, detention and freezing the suspect's asset by law-enforcement officers.Officials from the Supreme People's Court (SPC) also reported the progress made in a pilot program which intends to help courts at local levels to be more transparent and fair while meting out penalties.Zhou said these were vital to the building of a just and clean law-enforcement system and must be carefully implemented."Investigative and procuratorate authorities must attach equal importance to punishing crimes and safeguarding human rights, and to procedural justice and substantive justice, and must strictly abide by the law in enforcing investigative measures such as search, detention and seizing the suspect's asset," he said.He said the SPC's pilot program in roughly 120 local courts had promoted the fairness and transparency in handing out penalties, which had significantly reduced the rates of appeal, lodging a protest against a ruling and petition in criminal cases.Law enforcement agencies must push ahead the pilot program as one of their priorities, while in the meantime working to fully engage the public in the supervision of the handling of criminal cases, he said.Zhou, who also heads the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, called for more transparent law enforcement to ensure the public's right to know and supervise.He also said places for interrogation, custody, trial and detention must be under 24-hour audio and video recording.
