TUCSON, Ariz. — Tucson Police are asking for the public's help identifying someone who reportedly stole COVID-19 test kits from a downtown health center.According to a Facebook post from the department, it happened at the El Rio Health Center at 839 West Congress Street just before 8 p.m. Surveillance video shows the suspect disguised as a delivery driver, walking into the health center and walking out with approximately 29 test kits.At the time, employees were getting ready to close the facility. Staff didn't notice the missing test kits until the next morning, TPD said.The suspect is described as a Hispanic man in his 30s, between 5'9" and 5'11" with a large build. He has a full beard, with some greying, and left the scene in a reddish-colored Dodge Charger, or similar vehicle.Police emphasized that the tests are essentially useless without a fully equipped lab, and professional staff to interpret the results. Home test kits for the coronavirus do not exist, and police say anyone who talks to someone trying to sell the kits should contact law enforcement.The stolen kits were already replaced at the El Rio Health Center, but the stolen kits would help public health officials in future testing efforts. 1229
TUCSON, Ariz. — A team of researchers at the University of Arizona believe they've found an important clue in the fight against an aggressive form of brain cancer.Glioblastoma is the cancer that killed Sen. John McCain in August and Sen. Ted Kennedy in 2009.People are diagnosed with glioblastoma live, on average, for another 11 to 15 months. Very few survive the disease, so the group of researchers wanted to know why some patients live longer than others.Professor of Radiation Oncology, Dr. Baldassarre Stea, says the clue lies in the RNA of short and long-term patients.The team looked at the genetic variation in about three dozen patients.What they found is a gene called WIF1 is distinctly higher in patients who survive longer, according to Dr. Stea. Those who lack the gene succumb to the disease much quicker. 849
Two businesses decided to close their doors for a day in reaction to white supremacist Richard Spencer’s speech at Michigan State University. The Carpathia Club in Sterling Heights, Michigan said it got a call from Attorney Kyle Bristow. He wanted to book a meeting on Sunday at the club for about 100 people. “It was a law firm having a meet and greet. I didn’t think anything negative about it,” said Carsten Grotioh of the Carpathian Club. “Then Sterling Heights Police came in and asked to speak to management. They told me they heard there was going to be a Neo-Nazi gathering here on Sunday.”Grotioh learned that Bristow had represented Spencer as a lawyer, and the meeting was supposed to include Spencer’s supporters. He didn’t just cancel the reservation. He closed his business for the day. The owner of the Tipsy McStagger Pub in Warren said he had a similar experience. He got a call from Bristow’s Foundation for the Market Place of Ideas. He was told the organization wanted to host a networking meeting on Monday. When someone came into his business and informed him the networking involved people who supported a white nationalist, he says he was disgusted. “I said absolutely not are they coming to our bar. I mean, we are a neighborhood bar. I have been in this community 50 years. I retired from the Warren Police Department. I have seen enough hate. Our bar is what it is. It is a neighborhood bar. Everyone is welcome,” said John Vostoris, the owner of Tipsy McStagger Pub. Vostoris also decided to close his business to avoid any gathering there by people who planned to attend the event. The Anti Defamation League says standing up to hate, while not infringing on free speech is exactly what everyone needs to do.“It is not something we want to see in our state,” said Heidi Budaj, the ADL’s Michigan Regional Director. She says the fear is hate speech leads to action. Nationwide there was a 57% increase in anti-Semitic incidents from 2016 to 2017. In Michigan, there was a 13% increase overall. “We want our state to be known as a welcoming place that embraces diversity. A place where we stand up against hate,” said Budaj. Uber has agreed to pay 56 current and former employees about ,900 each, or .9 million, to settle their claims of gender discrimination, harassment and hostile work environment.On Monday, lawyers for the plaintiffs filed paperwork in a Northern California district court that outlined how a million settlement announced in April would be divvied up. In addition to the .9 million, another .1 million will be divided among more than 480 workers, including the 56 who are receiving the other payouts.The lawsuit was filed against Uber in October 2017 by three Latina engineers who alleged they were paid less than their white or Asian male colleagues. The women claimed Uber used a discriminatory "stack ranking" system, alleging "female employees and employees of color are systematically undervalued ... because [they] receive, on average, lower rankings despite equal or better performance."Those stack rankings were then used, in part, to determine promotions, according to the lawsuit. Uber also set employee pay based on their past compensation, which inherently disadvantages women.Fifty-six workers came forward to describe their experiences with discrimination and harassment at Uber. They are a subset of a broader class that includes about 480 women and underrepresented minorities who worked in certain software engineering jobs.
