(KGTV) - A fraternity at San Diego State has been placed under interim suspension after a freshman membered was injured.The mother of the student told 10News he suffered a concussion, as well as a fractured wrist, sprained ankle, and bruises on his back.It’s unclear exactly when or how the injuries occurred, but the student’s mom said he had been at an event at the Kappa Alpha fraternity house on Wednesday, October 17. SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - Doctors are warning that this winter's wet weather means an early start to allergy season."We anticipate that it could get pretty bad," says Dr. Dana Ger, the Clinical Director of Scripps Health Express.She says her offices have already seen people with all the symptoms; sneezing, runny noses, scratchy throats, coughs and congestion.Dr. Ger says you can blame it on the rain. All the wet weather in January and February kept the pollen close to the ground instead letting it disperse into the atmosphere. It's also creating a perfect environment for allergies to develop."We get mold because we have a warm and wet environment," she says. "With that we have these allergy symptoms."The rain is also bringing a high likelihood of a super bloom, with wildflowers throughout the state. Those will add more pollen to the air.And because allergy season is starting sooner, it could make symptoms worse as the spring moves along."If you have mild allergies when it's a mild spring, or a small amounts of pollen, you can have increasing allergies when there is significantly more amounts of allergies or mold," says Dr. Ger.To treat the symptoms, Dr. Ger recommends a nasal irrigation with salt water or a spray. She also says over the counter medicines will usually take care of the problem.If they don't, Dr. Ger says you should see a doctor to make sure there isn't a bigger problem, like Sinusitis."That's when it becomes critical that we have diagnosis," she says. He has been in the comedy scene since the late 1980s and said he "kept grinding." That hard work paid off as Koy is now getting ready to film his third Netflix special and performs to sold-out audiences across the country. Family has been a central theme in his routine, often talking about raising his teenage son and growing up with his Filipino mom. His son, now 16, is getting involved in helping dad refine his show. "He's an associate producer on [the Netflix special] 'Comin' in Hot.' He came up with my last joke... he's the one that told me to wear what I was wearing. That outfit, he picked it out," Koy said.Koy tells 10News his mom loves the attention, "My mom always wants more!" Koy said. When asked if there was enough diversity and inclusion in comedy, the half-Filipino artist he feels like the doors are now, "open and there's a lot more opportunity, but we still have a long way to go." Gavin Newsom said Sunday that he is shutting down bars in several counties across the state and recommending closures in others.Newsom made the announcement on Twitter hours after the state reported 5,972 new coronavirus cases on Saturday.San Diego County was not on the list of closures or recommended closures."NEW: Due to the rising spread of #COVID19, CA is ordering bars to close in Fresno, Imperial, Kern, Kings, Los Angeles, San Joaquin, and Tulare, while recommending they close in Contra Costa, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Stanislaus, & Ventura," Newsom tweeted at 12:17 p.m.On Saturday, Los Angeles County health officials reported "significant increases" in COVID-19 cases, including 2,169 newly confirmed cases and 23 additional deaths. (KGTV) - NOAA's Climate Prediction Center released the updated outlook for winter 2020-2021 expectations, and the report shows the increased confidence for a moderate La Nina winter.National Weather Service Meteorologist Alex Tardy said La Nina winters mean cold water along the equator, which are already present in October. These cold waters can have a domino impact on the globe, including warmer waters in the Atlantic and ultimately a higher risk of hurricanes, and also a more northern jet stream over the west coast, keeping moisture isolated more north and leading to dry conditions in Southern California.This dry winter coupled with San Diego’s recent weather history could be a recipe for disaster. The last two winters have been wet in San Diego, with most areas in San Diego County getting 1.5 times their usual rainfall during the most recent winter. This increased moisture helped vegetation grow, then the summer of 2020 brought record-breaking heat, drying that vegetation out. That, coupled with a lack of monsoon moisture in 2020, means there is dry vegetation that could be fuel for fires.“Any type of fire is going to be a problem in Southern California because the conditions are so dry,” said Tardy.He added that a new water year just began Oct. 1, 2020, so while the last water year had impressive rain totals, a new year has started.“So regardless of what happened last winter, we kind of reset now. Now we’re in a whole new year and unfortunately, things are looking very stressed as far as fire conditions,” said Tardy.He said rain is not out of the question for a La Nina year, but it will be more variable. Winter is the best time for Southern California to accumulate rain, and with the decreased chances of rain, Southern California could move into drought conditions by the end of the winter. 1850
