During the debate, the topic of race came up.Pence and Harris were asked to address whether justice was served in the Breonna Taylor case. Taylor was a 26-year-old Black woman who was killed in March by officer gun fire. Officers were executing a warrant when Taylor’s boyfriend fired at officers, prompting officers to return fire. There are questions on whether officers announced themselves before entering the apartment. A Kentucky grand jury declined to press charges on officers for firing at Taylor. One of the officers involved is facing criminal charges for wanton endangerment.Harris said that she believed justice was not served in the Taylor case.“Her family deserves justice,” Harris said. “She was a beautiful young woman. She had as her life goal to become a nurse and she wanted to become an EMT to first learn what is going on the street so she could become a nurse and save lives. Her life was taken unjustifiably and tragically and violently.”Pence offered his condolences to Taylor’s family, but disagreed with Harris.“Well, our heart breaks for the loss of any innocent American life and the family of Breonna Taylor has our sympathies, but I trust our justice system, a grand jury that reviews the evidence,” Pence said. “It really is remarkable that as a former prosecutor, you would assume an impaneled grand jury looking at all of the evidence got it wrong.”Pence then pivoted to decrying “rioting and looting” that took place in response to incidents of Black Americans being killed during interactions with police.“This presumption that you hear consistently from Joe Biden and Kamala Harris that America is systematically racist and that Biden says that law enforcement has an implicit minorities is a great insult to the men and women who serve in law enforcement,” Pence said.4) Harris, Pence dodge Supreme Court questionsHarris, like Biden last week, opted to avoid answering whether a Biden administration would add members to the Supreme Court. With Trump at the White House recovering from the coronavirus, it is questionable on whether next week’s debate will move forward. And if it does move forward, what changes might be made. Following last week’s debate, the Commission on Presidential Debates said it was considering changes given the frequent interruptions between candidates. Just about 48 hours after last week’s debate ended, Trump announced he tested positive for the coronavirus. With two weeks separating Trump announcing his diagnosis and next Thursday’s debate, Trump will have cleared the CDC’s recommended isolation period of 10 days. Washington state has a new law to protect net neutrality at a time when the feds are getting rid of it.In a bipartisan effort, the state's legislators passed House Bill 2282. which was signed into law Monday by Gov. Jay Inslee."Washington will be the first state in the nation to preserve the open internet," Inslee said at the bill signing.The state law, approved by the legislature last month, is to safeguard net neutrality protections, which have been repealed by the Federal Communications Commission and are scheduled to officially end April 23. Net neutrality requires internet service providers to treat all online content the same, meaning they can't deliberately speed up or slow down traffic from specific websites to put their own content at advantage over rivals.The FCC's decision to overturn net neutrality has been championed by the telecom industry, but widely criticized by technology companies and consumer advocacy groups. Attorneys general from more than 20 red and blue states filed a lawsuit in January to stop the repeal.Inslee said the new measure would protect an open internet in Washington, which he described as having "allowed the free flow of information and ideas in one of the greatest demonstrations of free speech in our history."HB2282 bars internet service providers in the state from blocking content, applications, or services, or slowing down traffic on the basis of content or whether they got paid to favor certain traffic. Washington, D.C. (KGTV) - A bombshell surprise in the form of a mystery allegation led to the postponement for Darrell Issa's confirmation to serve in the Trump administration. The unusual machinations at Thursday's hearing in the Senate could derail the nomination and push Issa to run for Congress, instead.The scheduled hearing came one year to the day after President Donald Trump nominated Issa, a former nine-term congressman serving parts of San Diego and Orange County, to run the U.S. Trade and Development Agency. But as the hearing began, ranking Democrat Robert Menendez (D-New Jersey) moved that the hearing be held in private. "There's information in his FBI background investigation that concerns me greatly, and that I believe members may find problematic, and potentially disqualifying for Senate confirmation," Menendez said. "I firmly believe that every member of this committee should have the opportunity to review that information." He went on to suggest that holding the hearing in public could bring embarrassment or harm to Issa.Chairman James Risch (R-Idaho) initially suggested continuing in public, but then left the room for a brief conference with Menendez and Issa. When the senators returned, Issa was not with them. Risch revealed his decision to postpone the confirmation hearing indefinitely. Risch later told reporters he had seen nothing in Issa's FBI file that he found disqualifying.Afterward, in an interview with CNN, Issa suggested that Menendez was simply trying to defeat his nomination out of politics and that there is nothing in the background check that hasn't been previously reported in the media. "Senator Menendez has only brought up — and perhaps it's anecdotal but it's what he chose to bring up — my being disciplined for false ID when I was 17," Issa said."I was a Boy Scout, but I wasn't the perfect Boy Scout, so to speak, as a young man," Issa added.
