BEIJING, June 8 (Xinhua) -- A senior Communist Party of China (CPC) official on Monday asked the border public security force to rely on the people to safeguard national security and social stability in the country's border areas.     Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks when he met with model individuals and groups of the border public security force. Zhou Yongkang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, also the secretary of the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee, meets with model individuals and groups of the border public security force in Beijing, capital of China, on June 8, 2009He asked the force to organize and mobilize people of different ethnic groups to participate in border defense to "form prevention and control network", which incorporated the strengths of both the public and the police.     The border public security force should make special efforts in the "prevention of and crackdown on the sabotage activities by separatists, terrorists and extremists forces, illegal border-crossing smuggling, drug and human trafficking," he said.     Most of China's border areas are economically under-developed or inhabited by ethnic minority people, said Zhou, who is also the secretary of the CPC Central Political and Legislative Affairs Committee.     The border public security force must innovate and actively serve the local people, get to know their difficulties, timely handle public security cases, and dissolve their disputes, he said.     The border public security force, listed as a component of the People's Armed Police Force (PAPF), is an armed law-enforcement body deployed by the state in border and coastal areas and at ports.     Since 2007, it has arrested 4,400 illegal border crossers, seized 3,806 kg of drugs, seized smuggled goods worth 620 million yuan (about 90.7 million U.S. dollars), cracked 19,205 criminal cases and handled 60,063 violations of public security, according to a white paper on national defense released earlier this year.

NANJING, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Negotiators from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan on Saturday stressed the significance of enhanced cross-Straits economic exchanges and cooperation amid the international financial turmoil.     Zheng Lizhong, deputy chief of the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), said the international financial turmoil has brought new challenges to economic development across the Taiwan Straits.     Compatriots from the two sides aspired to accelerate cross-Straits economic cooperation, Zheng said at a preliminary meeting with his Taiwan counterpart Kao Koong-lian, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the island's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     The meeting was held to make final preparations for Sunday's talks between the ARATS and SEF heads Chen Yunlin and Chiang Pin-kung.     Sunday's talks could bring enhanced economic development and cooperation across the Straits, he said. After 1979, the mainland allowed Taiwan products to enter at lower tax rates or tax-exempt.     In July 1988, the State Council, or the Cabinet, issued regulations encouraging Taiwan compatriots to invest on the mainland.     The mainland has been the largest trading partner of Taiwan since 2003, with annual trading volume surpassing 100 billion U.S. dollars.

GUANGZHOU, May 30 (Xinhua) -- South China's Guangdong Province reported one suspected A/H1N1 flu case late Saturday.     The case involved a 23-year-old Chinese Venezuelan. The female college student left Venezuela Tuesday and flied to Guangzhou, Guangdong's capital, Wednesday via Paris, and her relative drove her home in Foshan City, the provincial health department said.     She took a rest at home after showing flu symptoms Thursday and was sent to Foshan No.1 People's Hospital Friday.     Early Saturday, the woman was tested positive for A/H1N1 flu by the Foshan Center of Disease Control and Prevention. The Provincial Center of Disease Control and Prevention reexamined Saturday noon and the result was also positive. The case needs further testing.     China Saturday reported three new influenza A/H1N1 cases, bringing to 24 the total number of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland.     The one in the southeastern province of Fujian involved a local who studied in Canada. The other two in Beijing involved a Chinese American and a Chinese student who studied in the United States.     All the cases but one on the mainland were found shortly after they came from countries hard hit by the A/H1N1 flu epidemic. Seven were in Beijing, four in Shanghai, six in Guangdong, three in Fujian, and one each in Sichuan, Shandong, Zhejiang and Hunan.     Eight cases have been discharged from hospital by Saturday afternoon, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).     China raised vigilance against influenza A/H1N1 Friday after a patient in southern Guangdong Province was declared the first case of local transmission on the mainland. Medical experts are investigating into and analyzing the local transmission.     The patient, a 24-year-old woman living in Guangdong's capital city of Guangzhou, was believed to be infected by a man from New York on Monday. Guangdong provincial department of health confirmed both as A/H1N1 flu cases Friday noon.     Her flu symptoms have eased, Yin Zhibiao, deputy president of the Guangzhou No. 8 People's Hospital, said Saturday. But as the mainland's first case of local transmission, she would likely stay longer in hospital, Yin added.

URUMQI, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said Tuesday that ethnic unity was the "basic benefit" for all the people in Xinjiang.     "Ethnic unity is the basic benefit for the 21 million people of various ethnic groups in Xinjiang... and these people have a long tradition of loving and supporting each other," Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit told Xinhua in an interview in Urumqi Tuesday.     Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, an ethnic Uygur, was born in 1942 in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1960 and was elected CPPCC National Committee vice chairman in 2008. BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council reached a decision at an executive meeting on Wednesday to promote a new type rural social pension pilot projects.     The meeting, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao, said building a new rural social pension system was key to reducing rural poverty and narrowing the gaps between urban and rural areas. It was also key to maintaining social stability and promoting domestic consumption.     According to the meeting, the new-type rural social pension pilot programs will be carried out in 10 percent of counties this year. Rural residents above the age of 16 are all eligible to join the program.     The meeting also ordered local governments to strengthen supervision of pension funds.
