SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 10News team is celebrating the return of morning reporter Marie Coronel."I'm so glad to be back here with you guys," she told the morning 10News team in an emotional appearance in the studio Wednesday.About three and half years ago, Marie and 10News photographer Mike Gold were in Mira Mesa preparing for a live report on storm damage when heavy branches snapped off a massive eucalyptus tree crushing the both of them. Mike was able to recover from his injuries and was back to work a few months later, but it's taken years for Marie to recover from multiple injuries and return to the newsroom."This has been a crazy long journey...it's been so tough emotionally, physically, and me going through physical therapy, then doing all of this while raising our three little boys," she said.During her recovery, the native San Diegan stayed active and connected in the community through social media. But Marie acknowledged that her return was met with some jitters when 10News anchor Jim Patton asked what it felt like to be back."I was like the new kid walking in yesterday but then now in day two I'm like, 'let's get back to business.'"Marie credits her recovery and perseverance to the enormous support from family, friends, faith, co-workers, and the 10News – ABC San Diego KGTV viewers, she said."I’ve kept my eyes and ears on our community, and there are so many stories I can’t wait to start reporting. I’m thrilled to be back with our 10News team and telling your stories," Marie posted on her 10News Facebook pageFollow Marie Coronel at https://www.facebook.com/MarieCoronel10News/. 1622

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The King family, who launched "Chelsea's Light" after the rape and murder of their daughter Chelsea in 2009, has decided to end the popular "Finish Chelsea's Run" event after eight years. In an interview with 10News from the family's home near Chicago, Chelsea's father, Brent, said they are proud of the impact they have been able to have through "Finish Chelsea's Run," but that it was time to move on from the event."Our family wants to thank everybody that has ever come out to run in our race. It's spectacular. It's beautiful. It brings us a lot of joy. But at the same time, it reminds us how we lost our little girl," King said.Chelsea was a 17-year-old student at Poway High in 2010 when she went for a run at Rancho Bernardo Community Park. A registered sex offender, John Gardner, later pleaded guilty to dragging King into a secluded area near Lake Hodges, raping her, and strangling her to death. He buried the body nearby.Shortly after his arrest, Gardner also admitted to the murder of an Escondido teen, Amber DuBois, who had disappeared a year earlier. The King family began the "Chelsea's Light" Foundation, through which it carried out "Finish Chelsea's Run" and a companion baseball tournament. King says "Chelsea's Light" will continue to exist and raise money. However, he has launched a new nationwide organization called "Protect the Joy."King says he will use the experience he gained helping pass "Chelsea's Law" legislation in several states to protect youth from sex offenders to help build a bigger, stronger organization dedicated to issues of defending children."I've built an organization that mirrors the Sierra Club, or the Surfrider Foundation, or Greenpeace. But instead of protecting the trees, or the coastline, or the whales, I'm going to protect our children," King said. For more information on King's new organization, visit the website: ProtecttheJoy.org. 1952

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Comic-Con Museum plans to open to the public next summer, revealing a new look at the museum space designed to provide a year-round SDCC experience. The former San Diego Hall of Champions is still undergoing work to transform its interior into a dedicated space for art, pop culture, and interactive experiences. When finished, the museum plans to have a 25,000-square-feet of space for exhibits, more than 6,000-square-feet of classroom space for hands-on enrichment, and a 4K video theater and presentation space. The museum says it will also host a year-round schedule of programs and exhibits, like Comic-Con panels, creator meet-and-greets, experiential cinema, watch parties, eSports, cosplay shows, and more.A cafe featuring items themed off of current exhibits and programs is also planned. The museum will also have a gift shop with comics and graphic novels, souvenirs, and other collectibles."The spirit of Comic-Con has always extended beyond the conventions and that’s why we are very excited to be able to capture and share this creative energy in a space that is designed to be participatory, educational and, most of all, fun," David Glanzer, Chief Communications and Strategy Officer for Comic-Con, said. "Comic-Con is about creativity and collaboration and the promotion of often-times unrecognized forms of art. We look forward to the Museum evolving forward with the support of so many people who will benefit from this unique institution."While Comic-Con and the magic it creates in San Diego every year is at the heart of the museum, a focus on inspiring a passion for art and learning among its visitors will be at the forefront."As we move forward, we are pleased to share with greater detail how the Comic-Con Museum is developing to be a place where audiences can connect with the magic of Comic-Con year-round and where a diverse community comes together to enjoy, share and learn about comics and related popular art forms," Melissa Peterman, VP of Development for the museum, said. The museum says it has reached the half-way mark of its fundraising goal of million. Currently, the museum is offering online programming. 2181

We recommend extreme caution: avoid anything that could potentially spark flames or ignite a fire.Santa Ana winds are offshore winds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Restaurant Association has a grim forecast for the restaurant industry as communities across the state begin to see more and more restaurant closures. When the coronavirus pandemic started, the CRA projected that 20 to 30 percent of restaurants could close their doors for good because of the pandemic. That projection is looking to be on the higher end now, according to Jot Condie, the CRA's president and CEO."With this second shutdown, it's likely to be closer to 30 percent," Condie said. "A lot of restaurants that we're learning are closed, are doing it quietly. There are no signs posted, no banners saying we're closed for good."He said while many variables are at play, even when restaurants can reopen completely, many restaurant owners will not be out of the woods yet."After the opening, you'll see a sort of shaking out of the industry in those first 18 months," Condie said.Condie said the restaurants most at risk are fine dining and independently owned. He also said the impact will likely vary in various parts of the state. Condie believes that San Diego County and Southern California's restaurant industry may fare better than the rest of the state because of better weather throughout the year. The weather will be a significant factor for restaurants that can offer outdoor dining and expanded outdoor dining."Where the weather cooperates almost all year, you're likely not to see the challenges of survival that you will see in, for example, San Francisco or the Bay Area," he said. 1546
