As Tropical Storm Laura began setting its sights on Puerto Rico, and eventually, the Florida coast, Tropical Storm Marco formed late Friday.Marco has top winds of 40 MPH, but is expected to gain strength by the time it reaches the Gulf of Mexico. As of late Friday, however, the storm is not forecast to reach hurricane strength.The storm is then expected to head for the Texas or Louisiana coast.In the meantime, Marco is expected to hit Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula this weekend.Tropical Storm Laura is also headed toward the Gulf of Mexico, but instead of approaching from the South like Marco, Laura is coming from the east.Laura has top winds of 45 MPH as of late Friday. Before reaching the Gulf of Mexico, it is expected to skirt Puerto Rico and Hispaniola and Florida.The combination of Marco and Laura could cause havoc for emergency managers next week. Backpage.com, a popular website used to solicit sex was shut down by the feds this week. In Martin County, Florida, deputies are expecting more women to sell themselves on the street now as a result. As much as Backpage made it easier to buy and sell sex, investigations into the illegal trade would often start there. “Backpage, that was like the hub for us. We usually built a lot of our cases,” MCSO Lt. Jesse Carde told Scripps station WPTV in West Palm Beach in an interview. She took WPTV to where they’ll shift more attention as they expect pimps and prostitutes to do the same. “Not that they ever stopped the operations on the street but obviously we expect a little more for traffic,” she said. Generally the popular days for prostitutes to be out on the streets in Martin County are after payday, Friday and Saturday, but now with Backpage shut down, there could be changes. “People that live in neighborhoods that have in the past tended to be hotspots for prostitution, they’re going to probably see resurgence of it at least until the prostitutes, the sex workers, find a different way to use the internet,” MCSO Sheriff William Snyder said. “I’ll take you by the street where we’ve shut down a couple brothels in the neighborhood,” Carde said. These brothels would market themselves online, but also using old school methods such as business cards promoting a shell business and a wink. “As they’re passing out their cards well it’s ‘not really but come by, we’ll take care of you’ and people in the neighborhood already knew what kind of business it was,” she said. Detecting those will rely more on tips and undercover surveillance.With Backpage down, Lt. Carde says it will make it harder for traveling sex workers to find Johns. At least 105 people are dead after an earthquake rocked the Indonesian island of Lombok over the weekend, state media reported Tuesday.Another 236 people have been injured in the quake, according to the government's disaster management spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, who told the Antara News Agency that the casualty numbers could rise as the search continued for survivors.More than 20,000 people have been displaced since the 6.9-magnitude quake struck Lombok, a popular tourist destination, on Sunday night.The epicenter of the earthquake was in northern Lombok, a more residential and less developed part of the island. Most of the tourist resorts are located on the southern side of the island.Most of those killed were struck by falling debris from collapsed buildings, according to Nugroho. As students return to school and employees head back to the office all with new safety protocols likely including wearing a mask, a new study from Duke University explores which masks are more effective.Spoiler alert: A fitted N95 mask, usually reserved for those in the medical community, performed the best in their test. However, since many Americans do not have access to those and have been using a mix of store-bought or homemade cotton and fabric facial coverings, Duke tested 13 other kinds of masks.The study, which was published Friday, was prompted when a professor at Duke’s School of Medicine was asked to assist a local group buying masks in bulk for the community. According to CNN, the professor wanted to make sure the masks they bought were effective.Researchers gathered 14 kinds of masks, including the professionally-fitted N95 mask, a bandana, homemade cotton varieties, and a surgical mask. They then used a dark room, laser beam and cell phone camera to record how many droplets (which reflect the laser beam light) each mask allows through.For each mask test and the non-mask wearing control test, the speaker was recorded saying “Stay healthy, people” five times. Authorities have identified a Facebook post believed to have been made by the gunman who killed 12 people at a bar in California, a law enforcement official said.Ian Long, 28, burst into the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks and opened fire with a Glock .45-caliber handgun as patrons line-danced late Wednesday night.Long is believed to have posted the social media message around the time of the attack, according to the official, who is familiar with the investigation.In it, the writer says: "I hope people call me insane ...
