United Airlines has established a new policy for transporting pets in cargo holds that includes banning dozens of dog breeds and several types of cats.The new policy takes effect June 18, when the carrier will resume reservations for its PetSafe program. The airline temporarily stopped the program in March after a series of high-profile incidents involving pets that were lost and others that died on United flights.United said it will be working with American Humane, an animal-welfare group, to improve the well-being of pets that travel on United, both in the cargo hold and in the cabin. (KGTV) - Loved ones are making a gut-wrenching plea for tips after a hit-and-run crash that left a man on life support, days before his wedding day."I don't know what to do without him," said Sami Johnson, the daughter of Steven Johnson"I'm heartbroken. He was my everything," said Karlene Moen, Johnson's fiancee.Johnson - a father of six and a grandfather - was riding his motorcycle to work at a Lakeside trucking company Friday when he crashed around 5:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 67 just past Willows Road. His first call was to his fiancee."He sounded hurt. He sounded scared, and he was pissed off," said Moen.He posted photos of his injured leg on Facebook. He told Moen a woman in a car cut him off, causing him to crash."He said, 'We locked eyes. She knows I was there ... She just left me and left me laying in the road,'" said Moen. Soon after the accident, he developed chest pains. He was rushed into surgery with a torn aorta. On Sunday morning, Johnson went into cardiac arrest. He was revived but suffered severe brain damage. He was placed on life support. Moen says the he will be taken off life support in the coming days, and his organs will be donated.His wedding planned for Saturday will now be a 'Celebration of Life' service."He'll never see me in my wedding dress that I bought especially for him," said a tearful Moen.She's hoping the driver that caused the crash will be identified.We just want justice. (KGTV) - An unscheduled Veterans Day tribute played out at a cemetery in the North County.More than a week ago, local florist Jenelle Brinneman learned Valley Center's annual Veterans Day program had been canceled by COVID-19, including a ceremony at Valley Center Cemetery.She started raising money online and during her flower deliveries. In the end, she raised enough to place roses at the graves of hundreds of veterans."We have over 300 veterans that laid to rest here and we just wanted to make sure they are remembered," said Brinneman.Donors could nominate veterans for rose bouquets. One of those donors was the family of Robert Cronin, an Army veteran who fought in World War II in France and Germany. He passed away in 1992 at the age of 83."It means a lot to me to have him honored because he was a special part of our lives," said granddaughter Francesca Pappagallo.She says Cronin earned numerous medals, including the Legion of Merit for inventing a slide rule tool to increase the accuracy of cannons. Loved ones thought his rank was 'Colonel,' but after he passed away, a different truth emerged."They did a lot of research and he was actually a retired one-star General. Twenty-three and a college graduate, Angela Pennella's life was just beginning. But a split-second moment marked the beginning of a life forever changed."It was a day I didn't see coming," said Pennella. "There was a lot of emotion. I was angry, really sad. I lost most of my 20s from that day that was almost fatal."She was five minutes away from home when a reckless driver crossed the double yellow lines going 55 MPH in a 35-MPH zone, hitting her head-on."I don't remember much of that day at all, but that's the day that really changed my life," said Pennella.She was cut out of the vehicle and flown to the hospital with a lacerated liver, punctured lung, and four broken ribs, ultimately receiving over 1,000 stitches to her face and body. But it's the injury you can't see that lives with her 18 years later."The brain is this powerful tool, so beautiful. But it can also really get you down and bring you to a place that isn't who you are," said Pennella,She suffered a severe brain injury and had to re-learn how to talk again. Today, she still struggles with memory problems and mental exhaustion after everyday tasks."Once the brain is injured, it is hard to reverse that injury," said Ian Grover, medical director for the Hyperbaric and Wound Care Center at UC San Diego Medical Center.Researchers at UC San Diego Health have joined a national research study called Hyperbaric Oxygen Brain Injury Treatment (HOBIT) to assess whether the approach might also benefit patients with severe brain injuries."Because there's such time urgency, we need to get patients identified, stabilized, and get them into that hyperbaric chamber within eight hours," said Todd Costantini, the trauma medical director at UC San Diego Health. Traditionally used to treat wounds and decompression sickness in divers, patients in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber receive 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized room."The theory is that the hyperbaric oxygen will one, decrease swelling of the brain after it's been injured. And number two, it will deliver oxygen to the injured tissue," Costantini said.It's the first time this therapy is being used to treat patients in the hours after injury. Because they may still be unconscious, the study required special permission from the FDA. Participating hospitals are doing outreach to inform and educate their communities on the research."In medicine, we’ve made a lot of progress treating cancer, sepsis, those kinds of things. But in the last 20-30 years, we haven’t made significant improvement in the treatment of traumatic brain injuries,” said Grover.Because of cost and the staff required to operate this equipment; chambers are disappearing from centers nationwide. But with a brain injury occurring every 15 seconds in the United States, doctors at the participating hospitals hope the study’s results will be enough to bring the chambers back."Just to see how it would've reduced the inflammation, maybe I wouldn't have been in the ICU as long, or gained consciousness back faster," said Pennella, after learning about the research.Pennella is now an advocate, helping other brain injury survivors cope through the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation, where she is also on the board of directors. "After I went through my injury and recovery, I knew I wanted to do inspirational speaking and writing anyway that I could to just share my story to bring hope," said Pennella.Meditation, prayer, exercise, and gratitude journaling have been instrumental in her recovery. TUCSON, Ariz. — Police in Marana, Arizona are investigating after a man was reportedly holding a gun in his lap at a Starbucks near Cortaro and I-10 Saturday morning.Marana Police say around 8:45 a.m. there was a report of the man having his finger on the trigger of an un-holstered gun. The man was detained without incident when officers arrived.
