ESCONDIDO, Calif. (CNS) - A motorcyclist was traveling at high speed when he collided with a pick-up truck on Interstate 15 in Escondido and was thrown into traffic lanes, where he was struck by multiple vehicles, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.The CHP is seeing witnesses to the collision, which occurred about 9:55 p.m. Sunday near Via Rancho Parkway.A 48-year-old man from Chula Vista was riding a Harley Davidson Softail on the Centre City Parkway on-ramp to the southbound I-15 at a high rate of speed, according to CHP Officer Mark Latulippe. As the motorcyclist transitioned from the ramp onto the freeway, he sideswiped a Toyota Tundra traveling in the far right lane, the officer said.The initial contact between the Toyota and the Harley Davidson caused the motorcyclist to lose control, and the rider to be ejected, he said. Before emergency personnel arrived at the scene, multiple vehicles struck the motorcyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene.He was not immediately identified. 1022

Elizabeth Holmes, a Silicon Valley businesswoman whose biotech company Theranos was once valued at billion, will reportedly attempt to claim “mental disease” in her criminal trial, according to multiple reports.Court filings released this week indicate Holmes’ lawyers want to introduce evidence “relating to a mental disease or defect or any other mental condition of the defendant bearing on the issue of guilt.” However, details of what exactly her mental state is, or what the lawyers intend to argue are redacted.Holmes founded Theranos as a Stanford drop-out at age 19. She, and her former romantic partner and Theranos president Sunny Balwani, face fraud charges for claiming their company’s machines could perform several diagnostic tests with just a single drop of blood.The prosecution says the pair knew all along the technology wasn’t capable of doing the tests as promised, and allegedly defrauded investors, doctors and patients. They were charged in 2018 and could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.Holmes’ attorneys plan to introduce testimony from Mindy Mechanic, according to the filing, a psychology professor at California State University Fullerton.The university’s website lists Mechanic’s focus as “the mental health consequences of violence, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and depression as well as other important physical and social health outcomes” and that she also provides expert testimony in “complex legal cases involving interpersonal violence.”The judge is allowing the prosecution to conduct their own examination of Holmes, to gather any needed evidence.Holmes’ case is expected to begin in March 2021. 1666

Emily Dorffer is a walking story, so it’s fitting she plans to make a career out of telling them.“I’m just one of those determined little stinkers that just never gives up,” Dorffer said.An important chapter in her life will end soon — the next time she walks the Johns Hopkins University campus it will be as a graduate.The English major's love for writing started at a young age, and she never let Cerebral Palsy keep the words from flowing. “In my case, that means I have some slight fine motor skills difficult,” Dorffer said. “Which basically for me means messy handwriting, and I get a little bit tired if I have to write a whole lot at once.”So, how did she get to the point of becoming a published author and college graduate?“Typing is no problem at all.”But don't call her an inspiration.“It’s my life it’s my normal, I understand that it’s not most people’s version of normal but it’s mine.”Dorffer put together together an anthology of stories from disabled writers from around the world.“There’s a wide range of topics. There’s some simple stuff like a character just goes and shops for groceries and you see how her anxiety disorder affects her,” Dorfer said.The stories for (Dis) Ability: A Short Story Anthology started piling in.“This story deals with more assistive technology and the adjustment to that as well the character's self-image and how that develops through the story,” Dorffer said.Shifting the focus away from the disability to the strong storytelling of talented authors.“It’s an intimidating issue to talk about something that their just not familiar with and they're afraid of offending people obviously.Her mother Virginia couldn't be prouder of her favorite haiku writer. “Even as a parent I never knew she could accomplish what she has accomplished. If you just let anybody do what their passionate about it’s amazing what they can do. (KGTV) - Escondido Police arrested a pastor who allegedly molested a young girl, authorities announced Friday afternoon.John Rodgers McFarland was taken into custody on Dec. 18 by the Escondido Police Department. The arrest occurred in Fullerton, where McFarland lived and worked. Escondido Police say the alleged incident happened in Escondido several years ago while McFarland was visiting family in the area.He has been charged with two counts of lewd acts upon a child under the age of 14. Since 2014, McFarland has been the head pastor at Orangethorpe United Methodist Church in Fullerton, according to the Fountain Valley Police Department. Before that, he had served as the head of Fountain Valley United Methodist church since 1988. He also was a pastor at Surf City Church in Huntington Beach from 2009 to 2014. According to the Fountain Valley Police Department, there may be other victims abused during his time in Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach. FALLBROOK, Calif. (KGTV) -- Firefighters have stopped the forward rate of spread after a fire, dubbed the Fallsbrea Fire, sparked in Fallbrook Sunday afternoon. “Too many times, man” Chris Beucler sighed. He could not believe he was witnessing yet another wildfire approaching his home. "I looked out the window, and just beyond our lots down here I see a huge flame up in the air,” Beucler said. Early Sunday afternoon, Beucler and his wife were putting up artwork in his home, when the flickers brought back memories. It seemed like just yesterday, he experienced the Lilac Fire, which destroyed many of his neighbor's houses. The Lilac Fire started on December 7, 2017. The 4,100-acre blaze destroyed 157 and damaged 64 structures. "I've been up here 16 years, and this is probably the sixth time these things have happened. So it's just high alert all the time,” Beucler said. Cal Fire and North County Fire responded to the scene of the Fallbrea fire that sparked near Highway 76 and Ramona Drive around 12:30 p.m. When they arrived, the fire was only about a half-acre. But it quickly spread up the slope to about five acres. While the region is under a Red Flag warning, flames spread before gusts took over North County, Cal Fire said. "Make no mistake about it, while we are expecting a red flag condition to take hold of the county, we are not under those conditions as we speak,” Cal Fire San Diego Captain, Issac Sanchez said. “This was absolutely slope and fuel driven. Mostly burning in grass, which burns very quickly and very hot.”Firefighters are expecting conditions to worsen and to work overtime. But for now, veteran wildfire survivor Beucler is relieved. The walking trail that he created six years ago and preps twice a year saved his home once again. "We got a natural firebreak that we built for a trail to go around our house, and they're saying that's what saved our part,” Beucler said. According to Cal Fire, several structures were threatened, but the forward rate of spread has been stopped. The fire was 100 percent contained by about 4 p.m. The cause is under investigation.  2216
