LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities are seeking to dismiss roughly 2 million old minor warrants and citations in the hopes of easing legal burdens on the Los Angeles homeless population.The offices of the Los Angeles district attorney, city attorney and police chief announced the filing of the motions Wednesday, saying they are seeking to reduce the court’s backlog and focus on serious offenses.Homelessness rose 16% in LA over the past year, to more than 36,000 people, according to a June report by the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority.The city and district attorneys are also seeking to dismiss old fines and fees for minor violations.Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore told The Associated Press in July that he considered homelessness to be a “humanitarian crisis of our generation.” 803
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Georgia Engel, who played the charmingly innocent, small-voiced Georgette on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and amassed a string of other TV and stage credits, has died. She was 70.Engel died Friday in Princeton, New Jersey, said her friend and executor, John Quilty. The cause of death was unknown because she was a Christian Scientist and didn't see doctors, Quilty said Monday.Engel was best known for her role as Georgette on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," whose character was improbably destined to marry pompous anchorman Ted Baxter, played by Ted Knight.Engel also had recurring roles on "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "Hot in Cleveland." LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nick Cannon has apologized for "hurtful and divisive" anti-Semitic comments that led ViacomCBS to cut ties with the TV host and producer. The company's move came in response to remarks made by Cannon on a podcast in which he discussed racial bias with a former Public Enemy member, Richard Griffin. Cannon produced "Wild 'n Out," a comedy improv series for VH1, the ViacomCBS-owned cable channel. Cannon says in a series of apology tweets that he had spoken with several Jewish leaders Wednesday and was committed to better educating himself in the future.
