People across the U.S. are honoring loved ones who have passed from COVID-19 as part of a National Week of Mourning.Kristin Urquiza’s father, Mark, passed away from COVID-19 on June 30 in Arizona. She said in his obituary that "his death is due to the carelessness of the politicians who continue to jeopardize the health of brown bodies."Urquiza says her dad was one of her best friends and very generous guy. She’s speaking our with hopes of saving other people of color from the disease.“Seeing those disparities play out in my hometown, in my home neighborhood, and then having my dad go through this awful fight for his life and not be able to make it, I knew that I needed to speak my truth,” said Urquiza.Fiana Tulip's mother, Isabelle, was a respiratory therapist for 30 years. She was a year from retirement. Tulip says her mom continued to go into work even though she didn't have enough personal protective equipment and knew she was putting her life at risk. She passed away from COVID-19 on July 4 in Texas.Tulip says her mom was a “giant in her kindness,” as well as loving, giving, strong and resilient.“My mom was so brave, and I want her to be remembered as somebody who was thoughtful and who was generous and who was a hero, somebody who gave her life to save others,” said Tulip.She says in her mom's obituary "her undeserving death is due to the carelessness of politicians who undervalue health care workers."Mark and Isabelle are just two of the more than 210,000 lives lost to COVID-19 in the U.S.Tulip says if the country keeps ignoring the fact that people are dying, we’re going to have pretty traumatic effects later on.“So, it's important to feel and to share the warmth and to spread the love right now,” she said.“We are putting a stake in the ground to say we need to recognize, and recognition begins with collective mourning. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A night of peaceful protests in Philadelphia gave way to more unrest and some demonstrators clashed with police after a Black man was killed by officers in a shooting caught on video.Police say Walter Wallace Jr. was wielding a knife and ignored orders to drop the weapon before officers fired shots at him Monday afternoon.The lawyer for the Wallace family says they had called for an ambulance to get their son help with a mental health crisis, not for police intervention.“I find it extremely, extremely emotionally taxing to think about calling for assistance and wind up with the people who you called killing you. I can’t even conceive the concept,” said the family’s attorney, Shaka Johnson.Tuesday night, about 500 people upset by the 27-year-old’s death marched to a police station, where they were met by officers with riot shields. POINT LOMA, Calif. (KGTV) — Some residents in Point Loma are frustrated that they are being forced to remove their family-owned docks off Shelter Island. The mandate is part of the Port of San Diego's new Port Master Plan. Cameron Driscoll Lilley says her family's dock near Scott St and Bessemer Street is more than just an heirloom, it's significant piece of history in the community."This dock was put in by my great grandfather in 1943, and it was completed in 1944," Lilley said. Since then, her family has shared their dock with the public from sunrise to sunset. The deepest end portion of the pier is locked for safety reasons. She said this is an expensive endeavor but well worth the smiles it provides to visitors. "The insurance, maintenance, the upkeep, and the liability that we are exposed to. But it's worth it because it provides an opportunity for people in this community and beyond to interact with the waterfront in a way that they wouldn't get to do," Lilley said. Lilley said there are people from all over San Diego who enjoy walking on their dock to watch the fish and stingrays swim under their feet. But the Port of San Diego says their dock is not technically docked on their residential land, and because of that, it must come down. "They want to tear out a piece of our historical landscape," Lilley said. According to the California Coastal Commission rules, it cannot allow residential uses on land the agency governs. Lilley's only other choice is to make the dock available for the public 24/7. But she sees that as a safety hazard."The most tragic thing would be if somebody was out on the end and fell and or drowned or got hurt in a boating accident off of the pier," Lilley said.The Master Plan has no mention of hiring lifeguards if it becomes public."I think they are driving an agenda of tourism and revenue and of course San Diego needs that. But I am disappointed that the Port Master Plan hasn't prioritized the residents of this neighborhood," Lilley said. The Port of San Diego is welcoming all comments at their next Community Discussion. Police say that a Massachusetts home owned by Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady and his wife, model Gisele Bündchen, was broken into early Monday morning.According to the Brookline Massachusetts Police Department, police were notified when a home security alarm was triggered at Brady's home just before 6 a.m. Monday.Using security cameras in the house, police were able to see that the suspect had moved to the basement. "Multiple" units responded, and when they arrived, they found the suspect lying on a couch in the middle of the room.Police arrested the suspect, 34-year-old Zanini Cineus, formerly of Brockton, Massachusetts. He's with breaking and entering, attempted larceny and trespassing. Police say he was also wanted for "several active warrants" in other parts of the state.Police did not report that anything was stolen from Brady's home.Brady played quarterback for the New England Patriots — who play their home games about an hour south of Brookline in Foxboro — from 2000 to 2019. Earlier this year, Brady signed a two-year contract with the Buccaneers and has been living in the Tampa area for several months.The break-in came just days after reports emerged that Brady's health and wellness company, TB12, had been granted a million PPP loan earlier this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 1320
