When you enter the building at Daybreak Senior Services, pictures of blushing brides and anxious grooms greet you.“This is such a historic place,” said Scott Rasmussen, as he looked at the dozens of pictures lining the walls.Although the fashion trends may have faded, the memories have not.For 50 years, the building was a reception hall. It was a place of celebration, a symbol of new life beginning. Now, it’s a home base for those not ready to give up on life.“It’s a gap that needs to be filled and that’s why we’re here,” said Rasmussen, who is the program director at Daybreak Senior Services. Some days, that means joining a rousing game of indoor badminton or laying down the law playing some board games.Instead of wedding gowns, everyone now wears masks. Though you can’t see the smiles, you know they’re under there."One of our participants loves coming here and she calls it, ‘the club,’” Rasmussen said. “She tells everyone that she wants to go to the club, and I think it’s because we’re doing cool stuff.”Sure, they are doing cool stuff, but the biggest goal for Rasmussen is to help seniors from feeling isolated and alone."It is a real thing,” Rasmussen said. "I’ve known seniors that get so depressed that they say they’d rather just be done than have to go through another week of this because it’s just too hard.”Rasmussen said there is a real need in our country to help seniors who aren’t quite ready for full-time assisted living but are not getting all they need at home."If you’re loved one is just staying home all the time, they’re missing out on a part of their life, where they'd still be growing even as an advanced age 65 to 105,” Rasmussen said. “We can always still be growing.”The adult day care partners with programs through the VA and Medicaid and participants can drop in whenever they want. Programs like this are available all over the country."We love all of our participants. We absolutely love them, and we love what we do here because it’s such a valuable thing,” Rasmussen said.COVID-19 may be affecting their numbers some, but Rasmussen says it’s even more reason for people to reach out to their loved ones and check-in.“You need to just ask those questions, because if you don’t ask you just have a feeling of despair and it just gets harder and harder and that makes it difficult on everyone,” Rasmussen said. There may not be a lot of dancing going on or tossing of bouquets but there is hope and commitment to keep on going. 2482

When a Liberty Helicopters chopper plunged into the frigid East River on Sunday night, onlookers were stunned. But it was actually the third time in 11 years one of the company's helicopters crashed in New York. The latest accident killed all five passengers on board. The pilot, who managed to free himself, was the sole survivor.Liberty Helicopters describes itself as "the largest and most experienced helicopter sightseeing and charter service in New York City," with a fleet of 10 Airbus helicopters. But it hasn't said much about the latest crash, deferring to federal authorities.  600

What do you do during a day off while filming in quarantine? Hers (sic) the thing- #JeffGoldblum flatly refuses to rehearse. So every time is the first time,” Neill writes sharing a clip of the two singing “September Song” with Goldblum on piano. 726

With home-court advantage taken out of the equation this year because of COVID-19, the NBA playoffs look nothing like they once did. And on Wednesday, the season took yet another dramatic turn with at least one team boycotting the championships. The Milwaukee Bucks boycotted their game to protest the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin. It raises the question: what does this mean for the current moment of racial reckoning the nation has found itself in?Dwight Lewis, an activist during the civil rights movement, says it's about more than one game or any sport in particular."Sometimes you have to do things to get attention and say, ‘I can’t take this anymore. I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore,’" the now 72-year-old activist explained. For athletes and teams in the national spotlight, it's about using their platform to get the country to pay attention."If you don’t speak out now, what are people going to say about you? That’s what was great about what the Bucks did," he added.Professional athletes using their platforms to protest racial inequality is nothing new. The first time it happened was during the 1968 Olympics when two African American runners raised their fists during the national anthem to call attention to the civil rights campaign.Lewis says decades later professional athletes are still harnessing the power that comes with their position to help enact change and move the national dialogue on race forward."This is 2020. We’re no better. Racism is still as American as apple pie, unfortunately. So, what did we do to keep these people from not wanting to walk off the basketball court or the football field? What did we do?" 1690
