EAST VINCENT TOWNSHIP, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say an armed man who held off SWAT members for 10 hours surrendered after one of them sang him a Christmas carol.Nathaniel Lewis, of Chester County, Pennsylvania, was taken into custody in East Vincent Township early on Dec. 26.The Reading Eagle reports the 34-year-old Lewis allegedly fired at police officers who had responded when a concerned relative reported him acting erratically Christmas night.The shots hit a police vehicle, a house and another vehicle. Police returned fire.Eventually a negotiator got Lewis to agree to surrender after singing "White Christmas" to him.Lewis was charged with multiple counts of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other offenses. EL CAJON (KGTV) - After 50 years of service, the well-known San Diego Highway Man is retiring. Thomas Weller has been helping thousands of people stuck on the side of the road since 1966. He tells 10News he started helping after a man helped him in a blizzard when he was a teenager living in Illinois.“I was on my way home about one or two in the morning and the blizzard put me off the road into a snow bank," said Weller.Weller says he never forgot that moment and hoped to be that saving grace for many others. Turns out he tells us he’s lost track of how many people he’s helped.“More than ten thousand, it's just I never keep track.” Weller had a stroke back in March and since then decided it’s best given his limited capabilities to retire.“I’ve lost my strength and my agility, not my judgment yet because I’m still driving.” He tells 10News it’s for the best that he retires because of how increasingly dangerous distracted driving has made the roads."It’s just extremely dangerous out there, more so now than it used to be.”While he is giving up one of his favorite passions in life, he isn’t giving up his outlook on life, “the most beautiful compensations of this life you cannot sincerely help another without helping yourself in the bargain.” 1266

(AP) — A man suspected of gunning down a liquor store owner near Los Angeles leaned out a car window during a chase and blasted away with a handgun before being dragged wounded from the car Friday.There was no word on his condition as he was taken away in an ambulance.He is believed to be the gunman who walked into a Downey liquor store on Tuesday night and shot down Gurpreet Singh, 44, of Cerritos, Sgt. Mark Haxton said.Police have said nothing was taken from the store and there was no immediate word on a motive for the attack.On Friday afternoon, police and Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies began chasing a black Toyota Prius in Downey, southeast of Los Angeles.The high-speed chase stretched along a freeway and surface streets, during which video showed a passenger in a black T-shirt lean halfway out of the front passenger's window and fire two-handed at pursuing patrol cars.Video showed the man using a distinctive long-barreled revolver strikingly similar to one that was used in the store killing.The chase ended at about 3 p.m. in neighboring Vernon when traffic trapped the car and the passenger again fired. A car behind the Prius managed to back away, and police who pulled up in the next lane riddled the Prius with gunfire, shattering windows.A short time later, a bloodied woman driver got out and surrendered. There was no immediate word on her condition.The street near a railroad track was emptied, and sheriff's SWAT teams were called in. Two armored vehicles blocked in the Prius.During a standoff that lasted more than an hour, authorities rolled a robot up to the open driver's door to peer inside the car and later fired two flash-bang grenades into the vehicle.When the man inside didn't get out, a police dog was sent in to pull at him.
