SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As the weather across San Diego County warms, rattlesnakes are out if full force.Rattlesnakes live throughout Southern California and live in the deserts as well as along the coast, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The department says most bites happen from April to October when the snakes and people are most active outdoors. RELATED: Deadly backyard encounter could point to dangerous snake season“Snakes really get an unfair bad rap, when they actually play an important role in California’s ecosystems,” said CDFW’s Keep Me Wild program coordinator Lesa Johnston. The potential of running into a rattlesnake shouldn’t deter anyone from enjoying the great outdoors, the department adds. According to the California Poison Control System, the chances of being bitten are small when compared with the risk of other environmental injuries. RELATED: What to do if you or a pet are bitten by a rattlesnake“Like most wild animals, snakes prefer to keep to themselves and are not naturally aggressive. Taking the time to learn about safety precautions before going outdoors can make all the difference,” Johnston added. The department says rattlesnakes generally aren’t aggressive and will likely retreat if given room and not provoked or threatened. “Most bites occur when a rattlesnake is handled or accidentally brushed against by someone walking or climbing,” the department says on their website. Class at the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet School in Balboa Park, dance is their escape.“I just love it cause it like brings me joy and it can take me to my happy place,” said Renata Scorza-Muniz.Renata has been taking regular ballet classes since she was 2 years old. But in February, her life changed.“It’s stressful, I guess, to be in the hospital,” said Renata.Renata was diagnosed with cancer, causing her to lose her vision and forcing her out of her regular ballet class.That’s when she turned to a class called Ballet for Me.“It’s just so fun to do,” said Renata.Ballet for Me is a tuition-waved class that is designed for kids with unique physical needs. Each student in the class gets paired up with a mentor to help guide them through each movement.“It just makes me so happy when I get to see students feel happy and free in class,” said Kerri DeNies instructor and creator of the class.This dance class helps the kids feel whole again. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans presented five renderings of possible suicide barriers for the San Diego-Coronado Bridge.More than 400 people have killed themselves by jumping from the bridge since it was opened in 1969, making it the second deadliest suicide bridge in the nation behind San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.The possible suicide barriers include a large net underneath the bridge similar to the one to be put on the Golden Gate Bridge, three types of fencing, or 18-inch spikes on top of the existing barriers.Caltrans said one design will be chosen in Spring 2018.They said it will take several years to build the barrier because they need to have environmental impact studies done and get funding for it.  752

The San Diego Hunger Coalition is encouraging San Diegans to take part in the annual CalFresh Challenge to raise awareness about food insecurity. CalFresh public assistance allots .07 daily in food benefits, according to SDHC. The system, known nationally as SNAP, helps those in need but it is insufficient for helping people meet basic needs, SDHC says. During the CalFresh Challenge, participants must spend no more than .35 for five days on all meals, drinks, and snacks. During the week, participants must not accept free food. San Diego Hunger Coalition wants participants to post about the experience on social media with the hashtag #CalFreshChallenge. Participants are also asked to donate to SDHC. 784
