XI'AN, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged local governments Tuesday to accelerate industrial restructuring and development in western regions and boost domestic consumption to offset the impact of the global downturn.     Li made the remarks during an inspection tour of the country's northwestern Shaanxi Province, which ran from Sunday to Tuesday. The subsidy was originally offered in a pilot program in three provinces in 2007. BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Friday that the "good situation" in today's Tibet was "hard-earned and should be highly cherished."     Hu said during his visit to an exhibition marking the 50th Anniversary of Democratic Reform in Tibet, at the Cultural Palace of Nationalities in Beijing, that the reform 50 years ago was "the most extensive, profound and progressive social transformation in the history of Tibet."     All the nine members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee visited the exhibition, including top legislator Wu Bangguo, Premier Wen Jiabao, and top political advisor Jia Qinglin. Also exhibited are scenes of surfs being exploited by their owners in the old times and how they were liberated 50 years ago.     The exhibition puts on videos recording the March 14th Riot in Lhasa last year and the major projects the Chinese government has sponsored in the plateau, such as the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and the Tibet Gymnasium. It also includes photos about Tibetan people's lives today.     When visiting the exhibition, Hu stressed that, only by staying in the big family of the motherland under the leadership of the CPC, can the economy and society of Tibet develop by leaps and bounds, and the people of Tibet be the owner of the country together with other Chinese ethnics.     Tibet should speed up economic development and further improve the living standards of people living there, especially the peasants and herdsmen, Hu said.     Hu also said that Tibet should move from being "basically stable" to "peaceful and stable in the long run."     The exhibition, co-organized by the State Council Information Office, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Tibet Autonomous Region, has attracted about 137,000 visitors since its opening. 

BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhua) -- China Pacific Insurance, one of the country's largest insurers, announced Saturday that its net profit dropped 80.6 percent to 1.339 billion yuan (196 million U.S. dollars) in 2008.     The Shanghai-based insurer attributed the profit decrease to the sluggish stock market performance and the large amount of insurance indemnity after several natural disasters last year.     However, the premium income of the company rose 26.6 percent to94.02 billion yuan, said the firm in its 2008 annual report.     Its life insurance premium income increased 30.4 percent to 66.09 billion yuan last year, ranking the third in the domestic market. Its property insurance premium rose 18.7 percent to 27.88 billion yuan, making it the second largest among its peers.

BEIJING, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's lenders have been urged to be flexible and innovative concerning loan repayment from smaller firms.     The China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) said Friday it is trying to help small firms facing financing difficulties by extending the loan period.     According to a notice sent to various lenders, banks and small firms could stipulate such terms in loan contracts which would allow the borrower to file a new request for a credit checkup before the loan is due.     If no problem is found, the borrower could directly extend the loan period without starting all over again by signing a new contract.     Extra conditions that come along with the extended loan period could be worked out by both sides through negotiations, the commission said.     However, the commission did not define which small firms would be entitled to such favorable policies.
