Many of the thousands of migrants waiting to claim asylum are realizing their dream to live in America may be a tougher road than they imagined, especially following Sunday’s clash at the border, involving a group of migrants and U.S. officials.Conditions are horrid in one camp in the border city of Tijuana, Mexico, where people have been living in tents for weeks in a lot that once was a baseball complex. Many of them dream of starting a new live in the U.S., but those dreams are fading.Maria Elena Reyes waited in line for hours, hoping a volunteer may have a clean shirt. For her, these living conditions, and even the month-long journey from Honduras, all seemed worth it to get to the border. But that’s when she says she had hope of finding asylum in America.“To look for a better life, to help my grandchildren who are in Honduras and my daughters, and for myself,” Reyes says.But like others at the camp, her optimism seems to fade with each passing day in the tent city, especially after what happened Sunday, when U.S. border agents used tear gas on a group of migrants.“I would say after that incident, which was really bad, a lot of doors closed,” Reyes says.Already worn out from the long journey, many of these migrants are now fearful of the US, scared of what could happen at the border, even if they apply for asylum the legal way.Sarahi Nunes and her 3-year-old daughter, Genesis, thought getting into the US would be easier, but knowing there’s a months-long wait just for an official asylum appointment, makes her doubt whether she'll ever obtain her American dream.“Yes, at first, that was the plan,” Nunes says. “But now, I see how difficult it is for people asking for asylum.” She's already started the process of applying for a work visa to stay here, in Mexico. She says living in Mexico would still be a step up from her life in Honduras.Reyes is also hopeful she could find a job in Mexico, but she says if she doesn't in the next week, she will go back to Honduras.“It was a very hard battle to get here,” Reyes says. “I would not like to go back empty-handed.”  Reyes says she doesn’t want to give up, but knowing if she does return home, that’s what it will feel like. 2222

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Wildlife conservation has long been a strong effort made by many organizations with volunteer help. But now with a limit on volunteers and a lack of funding, conservation efforts are stretched thin.“We have 72 miles of coastline that we will take turtles in from, and those 72 miles of coastline actually hold the largest population of nesting Loggerhead sea turtles in the world,” Jessica Patterson explained. She is the coordinator at the Sea Turtle Healing Center in Melbourne, Florida.The center takes in turtles found along this coast, helps them get back to health in this facility, and releases them. Turtles they temporarily name, like Perseverance and Jellybean. The number of turtles they take in can vary based on weather, human factors, and other animals.“A few years ago we actually had over 1,500 washback or post-hatchling turtles come in,” Patterson said. This year, COVID-19 has washed in some new issues.“My biggest concern is that we're seeing a lower amount of strandings this year. We as a community are not on the beach seeing them because a lot of people are opting to stay home to stay safe,” she said. That, and the people who take care of them.Due to health concerns and social distancing rules, the center went from having eight volunteers a day to three. On this day, two morning volunteers were feeding the turtles and giving them any needed medication.“A lot of the sea turtle rescues are probably struggling, again, in terms of personnel,” she said. However Patterson considers her team fortunate, because this center, unlike most, is part of a zoo.“This is sea turtle nesting season and hatchling season and we have not cut back on that work,” Keith Winsten, Brevard Zoo Executive Director, said. “A lot of places did have to dramatically cut their mission-based work but we have kept moving forward with it.”Brevard Zoo is a nonprofit zoo that is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.“We’ve always said OK we’ll jump in with both feet to get her done, and we’ll figure out how to pay for it later,” he said. “We're having to figure out how to pay for things later right now as much as any place.”As with many businesses, the customer is their bread and butter.“Since 90 percent of our dollars are earned from people coming through the gate, that means we are down a really significant amount in terms of income,” Winsten said.“After reopening we realized we really needed to raise another million dollars to keep us fiscally sound,” he said.Another project the zoo helps with is the restoration and conservation of the Indian River Lagoon.“Which runs 156 miles north to south,” Jake Zehnder, Brevard Zoo Conservation Manager, said. “It is considered one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America.” Zehnder works to help repair the lagoon, which lines right down the road from the zoo.“We work here in the Indian River Lagoon to help repair decades of damage and nutrient pollution,” he explained.However unlike the sea turtles, the funding for this project is a little more stable. “In Brevard County there's a sales tax for restoring the lagoon,” Winsten explained. “That allows us to keep moving through this pandemic.”They also rely on large groups of volunteers, but right now, large gatherings are not allowed due to COVID-19.Even with a lack of funding and helping hands, the health of the environment and local wildlife continue to be a priority.“Sea turtles are like the sentinels of ocean health. If you see a population of sea turtles dwindling in an area, it’s a good indicator that the health of that area is not doing very well,” Patterson said.“Every time we release a turtle, it's like a victory for the whole community. Everybody feels we’ve done something good to make up for the significant impacts we have,” Winsten said. MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — An alligator crossing a road in Manatee County led to a deadly crash on Thursday night, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) says.According to an FHP press release, an alligator crossing State Road 70 walked into the path of a car at around 10:40 p.m. local time. The driver tried to swerve out of the way and lost control, authorities said.Troopers say the car ran off the road, into a ditch full of water, and then crashed into a tree. Michael Avenatti's week is off to a bad start, at least in court.On Monday, a California judge hit Avenatti with a .85 million judgment for failure to pay the debt owed to his former Newport Beach law partner, a court representative told CNN.The order stems from an agreement that allowed Avenatti's law firm, Eagan Avenatti, out of bankruptcy in 2017. As part of the agreement, Eagan Avenatti LLP agreed to a settlement with his former non-equity partner Jason Frank's law firm and the IRS.The firm agreed it would pay .85 million in two installments. If a payment was missed, that amount would balloon to million.Eagan Avenatti LLP failed to make the first payment and found itself in default, which put Avenatti himself in a financial pickle.Avenatti, who has become a household name as porn star Stormy Daniels' hard-hitting attorney in her case against President Donald Trump, had personally guaranteed the payment of .85 million -- meaning he was on the hook if his firm didn't pay. When Jason Frank Law PLC was not paid, he sued in federal and state court, and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Dennis Landin ruled in favor of him on Monday.Frank's attorney Eric George told CNN that Avenatti had attempted to delay the case by trying to get it moved to federal court, but failed in his effort."He thought he could gum up the works and file something last minute and the state court would throw up his hands. The trial judge saw through it and ruled on the merits of our motion," George said.Earlier this year, Frank had won a judgment against the Eagan Avenatti firm for the million that had been agreed to in the same settlement.
