LACEY, Wash. — A man suspected of fatally shooting a supporter of a right-wing group in Portland, Oregon, last week was killed late Thursday as a fugitive task force tried to arrest him in Lacey, Washington.According to the U.S. Marshals Service, 48-year-old Michael Forest Reinoehl was killed as a federal task force attempted an arrest. He was wanted by Multnomah County (Oregon) Circuit Court on murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing 39-year-old Aaron "Jay" Danielson, a member of the right-wing group "Patriot Prayer," last Friday during clashing protests in Portland.According to the Marshals, a task force located Reinoehl in Olympia, Washington and attempted to take him into custody peacefully. The federal agents claim Reinoehl brandished a firearm during the encounter, and the Marshals returned with gunfire.Reinoehl was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the task force members were injured.On Thursday afternoon, Reinoehl told Vice News that he shot Danielson in self-defense on Saturday, believing that he and a friend were about to be stabbed."You know, lots of lawyers suggest that I shouldn't even be saying anything, but I feel it's important that the world at least gets a little bit of what's really going on," Reinoehl told Vice News. "I had no choice. I mean, I, I had a choice. I could have sat there and watched them kill a friend of mine of color. But I wasn't going to do that."Portland has seen protests nightly for about 100 straight days, dating back to the Memorial Day weekend death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. While some demonstrations have been peaceful, a small area of downtown Portland has been marred by vandalism and violence for several straight months. Protesters have been calling for an end to police brutality and systemic racism in policing.The demonstrations have been a flashpoint in national politics, as President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted that Portland Mayor Ted Wheelers and Oregon Gov. Less parental warmth and a more harsh work environment affect how aggressive children become and whether they lack empathy and a moral compass, according to a new study.Researchers at the University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania and Michigan State University studied 227 pairs of identical twins. They analyzed differences in the parenting that each twin experienced to determine whether the differences predicted the emergence of antisocial behaviors.The study found that the twin who experienced harsher treatment and less emotional warmth had a greater chance of showing aggression and a lack of empathy and moral compass.These characteristics are known as callous-unemotional traits."The study convincingly shows that parenting—and not just genes—contributes to the development of risky callous-unemotional traits," said Luke Hyde, U-M associate professor of psychology. "Because identical twins have the same DNA, we can be more sure that the differences in parenting the twins received affects the development of these traits."Parents of the twins completed a 50-item questionnaire about the home environment, establishing their harshness and warmth levels.The work, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, is the latest in a series of studies from Penn's Rebecca Waller, assistant professor of psychology, and colleagues using observation to assess a variety of aspects of parenting. "Some of the early work on callous-unemotional traits focused on their biological bases, like genetics and the brain, making the argument that these traits develop regardless of what is happening in a child's environment, that parenting doesn't matter," said Waller, lead author of the current study. "We felt there must be something we could change in the environment that might prevent a susceptible child from going down the pathway to more severe antisocial behavior."Waller says a potential next step to turn these findings into interventions for families trying to prevent a child from developing these traits or to improve troubling behaviors. "From a real-world standpoint, creating interventions that work practically and are actually able to change behaviors in different types of families is complicated," she said. "But these results show that small differences in how parents care for their children matters. (KGTV) - A La Mesa dessert shop is beating the odds, flourishing through the pandemic.Toran Grays opened Extraordinary Banana Pudding March 14th, the day after the President declared a national emergency due to the coronavirus.Grays was set up for success from the get go, with prepackaged desserts available for take out, and partnering with Door Dash so he could be COVID compliant."I didn’t know COVID was going to hit so fast, but I did have belief in my product, so I said you know what I’m going to give it a try, you gotta try something at some point in your life if you want to do something great," Grays said.He tried starting up at least two other businesses before Extraordinary Banana Pudding,"I started a clothing company, an online shipping company, none of it worked before."Grays was determined. He grew up in Webster and Imperial Beach, and as a kid his grandmother came to visit, "my grandmother came down here from Mississippi, she made [banana pudding] for a bunch of our family members and I fell in love with it instantly!"Grays said it was his great-grandmother's recipe that's been handed down generations. Less than 11 months after Cameron Underwood underwent a face transplant, the 26-year-old is revealing himself to the world.Underwood, of Yuba City, California, sustained a self-inflicted gunshot to the face in June 2016. The extensive damage left him missing most of his lower jaw, his nose and every tooth but one, a statement said. He also experienced damage to his upper face and palate.Conventional reconstructive surgery, which he reportedly tried several times, could only do so much.Then, Underwood's mother, Beverly Bailey-Potter, read a magazine article about Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, a professor of reconstructive plastic surgery and the chair of the plastic surgery department at NYU Langone Health."We knew he was the only person to whom we would trust Cameron's life," she said in the release from the hospital. "We were willing to travel the long distance."Since the first face transplant was done in France in 2005, more than 40 have been completed around the world.NYU Langone Health has completed two of the procedures and has a designated face transplantation program, one of just a handful in the United States. Rodriguez completed two previous face transplants, the first at University of Maryland, and headed up a team of more than 100 medical professionals who tackled Underwood's case.The transplant surgery lasted about 25 hours.Underwood's journey has been marked by milestones.The time between his injury and face transplant was just about 18 months, the shortest period between the two in publicly reported cases in the United States, the hospital said.This is significant in helping his physical, emotional and psychological recovery, Rodriguez said."Cameron has not lived with his injury for a decade or longer like most other face transplant recipients have," Rodriguez said in the statement. "As a result, he has not had to deal with many of the long-term psycho-social issues which often lead to issues like severe depression, substance abuse, and other potentially harmful behaviors."Underwood also experienced one of the shortest wait times for a donor, the hospital said. Once he was approved for a transplant by NYU Langone and put on the list for organ donation, he waited only six months for the early January call that would change his life.His donor was William Fisher, a 23-year-old resident of New York who was an aspiring filmmaker and writer. Fisher, who registered as an organ donor when he was a teen, gave to more than just Underwood. He also gave his heart, kidneys, liver, eyes and other tissues.In honoring her son's wishes, Fisher's heartbroken mother got something in return."Being a part of this experience has been a source of strength for me during a very difficult time," she said in the statement. "I don't think I would have survived Will's death if not for Cameron. Cameron has his whole life ahead of him -- and I love the idea that Willie is helping him have a better life."Underwood was discharged from the hospital in mid-February but initially stayed in New York for rehabilitation, which included speech therapy, and orthodontic treatment. By the end of March, he was home in California -- though he's made monthly trips back to New York for followup visits.He will remain on anti-rejection drugs throughout his life but to date has responded well. And he's grateful for this second chance at life -- and the medical team and donor who made it possible."We hope my experience inspires others who have severe facial injuries to have hope, as I was inspired by others who came before me," Underwood said in the statement.
