SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Northbound lanes of Interstate 5 through National City were shut down early Saturday following a deadly crash.The two-vehicle collision occurred just after the State Route 54 connector, according to California Highway Patrol. All traffic was being diverted off I-5 at the Mile of Cars. Traffic was also being diverted off WB SR-54 onto Highland Ave.Traffic gridlocked in the area, backing up onto the E St. on ramp in Chula Vista and westbound Sr-54 connector, according to CHP. Some motorists were seen turning around on the on ramp and driving the wrong direction.MAP: LIVE TRAFFIC CONDITIONSCHP reported that all NB I-5 lanes were reopened just before 11 a.m.The cause of the crash is being investigated. But CHP said it appeared a Toyota Tacoma was speeding in the emergency lane to get around traffic and caused a chain-reaction crash involving at least four vehicles.That suspected driver of that truck reportedly took off after causing the crash, CHP said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One man is behind bars after a series of events in Rancho Penasquitos, including nearly running over a firefighter. Around 2:30 p.m. California Highway Patrol received a report of a reckless vehicle on SR-76 near Cole Grade Road Monday. The blue Toyota RAV4 was reported after unsafely passing vehicles and speeding in the area. Shortly after, CHP reported that the driver - Falahi Abrahim - was involved in a crash and started a brush fire.Shortly after Cal Fire responded to the fire, 37-year-old Abrahim from fled the scene - nearly hitting the firefighter who was trying to help him.Police officers followed, but Abrahim refused to stop and a pursuit began. The pursuit continued westbound on SR-76 to I-15 and transitioned to I-15 Southbound. The vehicle continued to flee from officers on I-15 Southbound and exited the freeway at Camino Del Norte where the vehicle progressed eastbound.During the chase Abrahim failed to stop for two red lights at separate intersections and officers discontinued the pursuit in the interest of public safety.A San Diego Police Department helicopter continued to follow the car, communicating Abrahim's location to the CHP. At 3:11 p.m. the driver stopped near the 10000 block of Carmel Mountain Road. After a short foot pursuit, Abrahim was taken into custody and arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug and felony evading charges.The incident involving the assault of the firefighter at the collision scene is still under investigation. 1572

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police have identified the man who died in custody after being arrested in Little Italy earlier this month.Vito Vitale, also known as Todd James Vitale, 39, died at the hospital after being taken into custody.Witnesses say Vitale was running in and out of traffic naked near the 600 block of West Grape Street around 11 p.m. Friday yelling for help.People who witnessed the events also told police that the man appeared to be under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.RELATED: Police investigate death of man arrested in Little ItalyAfter placing Vitale into handcuffs, several witnesses had to help officers restrain him. Police provided medical aid to Vitale until paramedics arrived.Police also identified the officers involved in the incident as Greg Pilkington, a 10-year veteran of the department, Robert Nelson, a three-year veteran and Carlos Diaz, a one-year veteran. 915

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person is dead and another person is facing life-threatening injuries after a pair of separate crashes involving Bird scooters Friday and Saturday.The first incident happened just before 9 p.m. Friday in Hillcrest. San Diego Police said a 42-year-old woman had been riding westbound in the 1200 block of University Ave. in a bike lane when, for unknown reasons, she overturned while on her Bird scooter and hit her head.The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say the woman was not wearing a helmet and had been drinking.In the second incident, a man was riding on a Bird scooter southbound in the 1400 block of Third Ave. when he was hit from behind by a vehicle just before 4 a.m., Chula Vista Police said.26-year-old Esteban Antonio Ramon Galindo died shortly after being transported to the UC San Diego Medical Center, according to police. It's not clear whether Ramon Galindo was wearing a helmet when he was hit.Police said the driver remained at the scene and has been cooperating with police. The cause of the crash was still under investigation Saturday. Investigators did not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. 1208
