As it happens to be one of California's original surf towns."Oceanside still has that vibe to it. I mean this town revolves around surfing," says U.S.A. Surfing CEO Greg Cruse.U.S Olympic surfing coach Brett Simpson says he loves the surfing tradition and atmosphere you find in Oceanside."The culture is very rich. There has been a lot of years where there has been tons of shapers, the magazines, and clothing companies."So it just makes sense the U.S. Olympic Surfing team has chosen Oceanside as a training site for the Olympic games in Japan."Oceanside is a very ideal place because it mimics a lot of what we are trying to do. There are beach breaks, and it has some jetties, as well as a pier. It's very good practice for where ever we go around the globe."And the beaches also resemble the type of waves team U.S.A.will be competing on when they get to Japan next year."For us to be able to utilize something that's similar to the Olympic site, without having to travel to Japan, is going to be very helpful to our team," says Cruse.And this Sunday, Oceanside is calling on all surfers to hit the waves in support of California Surfing Day. It is the state's designated holiday to honor the history and the culture of the sport. "Obviously, every day is surfing day for me and other surfers," says Simpson. "But September 20th is a big one. Not since 2005 has the Atlantic basin seen so many storms in a hurricane season. The year 2020 now eclipses the old record, with at least 12 of those storms making landfall this year in the U.S. alone.“Those two years are quite similar. They are anomalies,” said Lewis Link, a professor at the University of Maryland who studies hurricanes.An increasing number of hurricanes are becoming major ones, which means their wind speed falls into a Category 3 hurricane or higher.“Partially, it could be attributed to warming, higher sea surface temperatures, which are the fuel for generating hurricanes,” Link said.It’s not just coastal areas that bear the brunt of concern during hurricanes. More and more often, the effects from these storms may hit the coast first, but they are being felt far more inland and in many more states than ever before.A recent map put together by the National Hurricane Center showed all the counties impacted by hurricanes and tropical storm winds this year. The effects of those storms reached inland states like Arkansas, Tennessee, West Virginia and Vermont.Yet, the effects from these storms go beyond just high winds.“The biggest problem we have is with flooding, is inland flooding,” Link explained. "And some of that is attributed to tropical systems that continue to dump a lot of rain, long after they cross the shoreline.”That’s an issue, he said, because many areas don’t have the infrastructure in place to deal with the heavy, quick downpours that are associated with tropical systems.“Not only are they old, but they’re just not up to the task. That’s a serious problem. How do you change that?” Link said. “We’re not set up well to change our infrastructure based on changing conditions.”It is a change that may have some communities rethinking exactly what it means to be in a hurricane zone.While the official hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, occasionally some tropical storms do develop outside those dates, including some that formed this year in May. (KGTV) - Two North County bars have voluntarily closed down because of positive COVID tests.Last Friday, Kate Dionisio went to dinner with her husband at Masters Kitchen and Cocktail."We had dinner and one drink, and stayed about an hour," said Dionisio.A week later, Dinoisio, who has an underlying health condition, says the night of celebration has sparked anxiety."Panic. Scary. We've been so careful with masks and taking precautions, but this felt out of my control," said Dionisio.On Thursday, on the bar's Facebook page, a message announced a recent positive coronavirus test and a voluntary closure for two weeks to best ensure everyone's "health and safety." The bar's owner says an employee was tested on Monday, with the positive result coming on Wednesday. The next day, the same day of the Masters post on Facebook, there was a similar message put up by Mission Avenue Bar and Grill, just a few blocks away. In this case, two employees tested positive. Their post stressed that safety is "our highest priority." It also promised a sanitization by a professional cleaning company. Their reopening date is to be determined, only after every returning staff member has tested negative. The owner of Masters Kitchen and Cocktail says there is no overlap in staff between the bars, but in their industry in Oceanside, "everyone knows everyone."The two bars are just a handful of local bars and restaurants to disclose positive COVID-19 tests. OKLAHOMA CITY -- An Edmond, Oklahoma teacher is offering free rides to teachers trying to get to the Capitol for the walkout."I couldn’t tell you how many people have been in this car," Troy Frieling said. "I have no idea. I’ve had children, administrators, support staff, just teachers in general."For the last eight days, Troy Frieling has shuttled people to and from the Capitol from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. He picks them up at their cars parked in neighborhoods a few miles away and drops them off just a few steps from the rally.Frieling is a teacher himself and so is his wife."Honestly I wanted to be able to serve the teachers," Frieling said. "I just didn’t feel like my time standing in line up there was going to help anything."He said he has picked up some of the same people day after day.A ride in Frieling's truck is completely free."They’ve asked me, 'Do you want donations?' and I’m like, 'No, it wouldn’t be a free ride if you gave me donations,'" he saidHe said he has found a few dollars left behind in his truck. The only thing he asks of his passengers is they sign a poster in his car.
