Just as law enforcement and educators are speaking out about the tragedy, so is the medical community."There's no more of a horrible feeling than to tell a family member that their child is now deceased and no longer can play," Jeffery Upperman, MD, said. Vanderbilt Children's Hospital's Surgeon-In-Chief, Dr. Upperman said Thursday morning's incident hit home. He is a long-time resident of Los Angeles County, who just recently transferred to Tennessee. "Hearing about the tragedy, I could've been one of those trauma doctors in the bay."He is in San Diego this week with more than 500 medical professionals at the Pediatric Trauma Society Conference, to learn about the latest medical treatments that focus on the care of injured children. Dr. Peter Masiakos is the Pediatric Trauma Director at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is speaking about the effects of gun violence. "We all know that it's far better to act on the side of prevention, instead of acting to fix the wounds," Dr. Masiakos said. He said too many kids come into the E.R. with gunshot wounds - via homicide, accident, or suicide. He said new federal policies need to be enacted to protect them, just like seat-belt legislation and the fight against tobacco."We have to engage the community like in the same way that Dr. C. Everett Koop did almost 40 years ago when he identified the issue of smoking and mitigated that," Dr. Masiakos said. They said school shootings are no longer just a gun issue, a school issue, or a law enforcement issue. They said it is a public health crisis."Physicians, seeing what we see, we are in our lane, and we talk about the issue of gun violence as we know what it is. SAN DIEGO — The driver of the McLaren sports car involved in a fiery fatal crash on Interstate 805 Thursday has been identified.Trevor Heitmann, 18, was behind the wheel of the 2014 sports car that collided with an SUV, killing himself, and a 43-year-old woman and her 12-year-old daughter, according to the San Diego Medical Examiner.The mother and daughter have yet to be identified. The medical examiner is using an alternative means to identify the bodies because of how badly they were burned, according to the California Highway Patrol.Heitmann was traveling at a high rate of speed heading southbound in a northbound HOV lane at about 4:30 p.m. near La Jolla Village Dr. before the collision, CHP said. Troopers believe he entered via an HOV lane access at Carol Canyon Rd.The two vehicles collided and exploded into flames, witnesses said, causing a chain reaction of crashes with at least five other vehicles.Heitmann was killed of blunt force trauma and pronounced dead at the scene, the medical examiner reported.The two occupants of the SUV died due to the fire which engulfed the vehicle after the crash, the report said.It's still not clear why Heitmann was traveling at such a high rate of speed in the wrong direction. According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles, his driving record was clear.CHP said Heitmann's vehicle was linked to an incident at Ashley Falls Elementary School in Carmel Valley before the crash, in which several students said the driver of a sports car drove through a fence. Now, posts with the tag #IAmVanessaGuillen are circulating online, as people share their own stories of sexual assault in the military.Billiekai Boughton with the San Diego Women Veterans Network said any conversation like this can bring up hard memories for female veterans. She said while many women have a positive experience in the military, four out of five females report harassment or assault. The goal of her group is to support women through any of this pain. She says this is important in a community like San Diego which has about 26,000 female veterans.“For those of us who have been in the military and have had negative experiences, this can be a memory (sic) of feeling unsafe,” said Boughton.The group’s website says the most common request of women veterans in San Diego is to meet other women veterans. Their primary goal is to create a community for female military veterans, while also encouraging community service and policy change, which encourages and embraces the positive traits female vets have to offer.“Our friends remind us how strong we are. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A Chinese researcher accused of concealing her ties to her country's military on a visa application she submitted to so she could work in the U.S. has been booked into a Northern California jail. Sacramento County jail records show Juan Tang was detained early Friday. The Justice Department on Thursday announced charges against Tang and three other scientists in the U.S., saying they lied about their status as members of China's People's Liberation Army. All are charged with visa fraud. The justice department accused the Chinese consulate in San Francisco of harboring a fugitive. It is unclear if Tang has an attorney who could comment on her. 679

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pacific Gas & Electric Co. power lines may have started two wildfires over the weekend in the San Francisco Bay Area, the utility said Monday, even though widespread blackouts were in place to prevent downed lines from starting fires during dangerously windy weather.The fires described in PG&E reports to state regulators match blazes that destroyed a tennis club and forced evacuations in Lafayette, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of San Francisco.The fires began in a section of town where PG&E had opted to keep the lights on. The sites were not designated as a high fire risk, the company said.Powerful winds were driving multiple fires across California and forcing power shut-offs intended to prevent blazes.
