"And the stamp, this forever stamp, will be a big help."O'Shaughnessy revealed to 10News that Ride was a stamp collector, herself. "She just kept doing it her whole life, so she would just be so honored with this."Ride was the first American woman in space. Upon leaving NASA, she became a professor. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Symphony Orchestra announced Thursday they are breaking ground in September for the Bayside Performance Park, a new permanent venue for the Orchestra at the Embarcadero Marina Park South. The Symphony Board of Directors voted unanimously Wednesday on the 9-month plan that will be complete in time for summer concerts in 2020.Symphony CEO Martha Gilmer said they are taking advantage of an underutilized part of the Embarcadero, "we've looked and there is no performance venue on the water like this, certainly not in the state of California, but probably the U.S."READ RELATED: San Diego Symphony's new bayside venue clears last hurdle before buildThe Symphony has been stalking the venue for years, "people had the idea to have a permanent venue out here for 17 years, but we have been hard at work for four," she said. The final project can seat up to 10,000, "feature a permanent, highly innovative, architecturally striking and acoustically superior outdoor stage that will allow the Symphony to present a wider variety of musical presentations and enrich the patron experience with improved sight-lines, expanded concession area and permanent bathrooms," the press release states."I understand that some people on Coronado are concerned about the potential for noise but it's good noise," neighbor Sam Ciccati said, excited about the new venue. The design shifted due to that concern, pointing the shell-shaped stage away from the island. The venue will host more than the symphony and there's the possibility Comic-Con could get involved."We would have concerts here of course, but it remains a park much of the year, and we'll be able to have yoga classes with a string quartet and we'll be able to have children activities, really activate this site an bring more people to the bay," Gilmer said, suggesting it could be an education destination teaching students about the port and being water-wise."The only thing that will limit us here is our own imaginations," she said. The project is projected to cost million, funded completely by private donations. Gilmer said they've raised half the amount and hope to see more generosity. 2183

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County District Attorney announced Monday that criminal charges have been filed against a former San Diego Sheriff’s deputy accused of fatally shooting a detainee.Former deputy Aaron Russell, 23, is being charged with murder in the second degree after being accused of shooting and killing Nicholas Bils, 36, who escaped from a California State Park Officer’s car outside San Diego Central Jail on May 1. Bils was allegedly running away from officers unarmed when he was shot. He was initially arrested for reportedly threatening a ranger with a golf club at Old Town San Diego State Park.RELATED: San Diego County sheriff’s deputy who fatally shot escaped detainee resigns from department“We reached the decision to file criminal charges following a thorough review of all the objective facts and evidence in this case by specialized prosecutors and investigators in our Special Operations Division,” said San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan.“When a life is taken, we must make decisions based in facts and law, and not ones that are influenced by the status of the accused as a peace officer nor the status of the victim. These decisions must be made solely in the interest of justice and not based on favoritism nor public opinion. Every person must be accountable under the law,” she continued.Russell is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday. 1399

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department gave 10News a behind the scenes look at the specially-trained team that solves arson cases. Inside Station One is the elite and highly specialized Metro Arson Strike Team, or MAST, made up of fire investigators, police detectives, ATF, FBI and a bomb squad. The team is dedicated solely to investigate arson. To be on the specialized team, MAST training goes beyond the fire academy. “You are wearing the hat of an electrical engineer, a scientist, a fire fighter, a report writer. We wear a lot of different hats and we have to be good at it,” said Captain James Shadoan. MAST spent the day with 10News demonstrating how they perform the task of solving an arson.
