XI'AN, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Two floods and other rain-triggered disasters that hit northwest China's Shaanxi Province in the past 11 days had left at least 111 dead and 167 missing, provincial authorities said Sunday.The first floods, from the rain-swollen Hanjiang River and its tributaries, hit Shaanxi's Ankang, Hanzhong, and Shangluo cities from July 14 to 19. Another flood that began Thursday worsened the catastrophe.The floods have affected about 4.25 million people and forced 703,000 people to be evacuated. In the worst-hit Ankang City, 63 people were killed, 119 missing and 2,824 injured, according to a statement from the provincial government.The floods also caused an estimated economic loss of 9.56 billion yuan. Officials noted that more than 71,000 people were mobilized to assist in the flood control.

Last night, we felt sorrow when the whole village gathered to have our last dinner in our hometown together," a villager surnamed Wang said.The government paid the dinner and organized a troupe of gong and drum players to cheer up the villagers.Their journey was the starting point for the nation's largest relocation program after that of the Three Gorges Hydro-Power Project, which involved the relocation of 1.27 million.The relocation for the building of the central route of the SNWD by 2014 will involve 330,000 residents - 180,000 in Hubei and 150,000 in neighboring Henan Province.The project is designed to take water from a section of China's largest river, the Yangtze, to satisfy demand in the north China's drought-prone megacities - Beijing and Tianjin.According to the government, from Wednesday until September 30, about 60,000 people will be relocated.At the farewell scene, a fleet of 15 coaches carried the villagers while 34 trucks loaded with the villagers' belongings was followed by a number of ambulances with the village's elderly, unwell and pregnant."We may set a record in terms of speed of relocation -- 60,000 people within 50 days. YUSHU, Qinghai, July 10 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government on Saturday started a massive multi-million-dollar project to restore 87 monasteries damaged in a 7.1-magnitude earthquake that shook a predominantly Tibetan area in northwest China in April.Monks and officials gathered at the new site of Trangu Monastery in Yushu, Qinghai Province, for a brief ground-breaking ceremony. Monks from the 700-year-old monastery, whose former buildings collapsed in the quake, held a prayer service, chanting sutras and turning prayer wheels to mark the start of the rebuilding.More than 2,200 people were killed after the 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Yushu. The entire town of Gyegu, the seat of Yushu prefectural government, was flattened, leaving more than 100,000 residents homeless.Lodroe Nyima Rinpoche, a living Buhhda of the Trangu Monastery, said monks felt "grateful" for the government efforts to rebuild damaged monasteries.Three best known monasteries damaged in the Yushu quake were Trangu, Gyegu and Renyak.The repair of Gyegu Monastery also started on Saturday.Qinghai's Ethnic Affairs Committee said the central government had earmarked 1 billion yuan for the monastery restoration in Yushu. The construction will cover an area of 170,000 square meters.Yushu is predominantly populated by ethnic Tibetans and most of them are Buddhists. There were thousands of monasteries, including 194 large or medium ones, in the region before the quake. The number of monks, nuns and other religious personnel was estimated at 23,000, local government data show.The economic losses of the monasteries and in-house religious relics mounted to 756 million yuan, according to the data.Monasteries and religious activities form an important part of local residents' daily life. Phuriwa, deputy head of Qinghai's Ethnic Affairs Committee, said the drafts for monastery restoration were revised many times only to best protect the Tibetan culture and to give local Buddhism believers best places to observe religious rituals.Saturday also marked the start of about 200 rebuilding projects in Yushu, which would cost 16 billion yuan.China plans to spend 31.7 billion yuan in three years to rebuild Yushu. PIRAEUS, Greece, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Two Chinese naval escort warships arrived in Greece's Piraeus Port on Monday, kicking off a five-day visit.The vessels, destroyer Guangzhou and frigate Chaohu, are part of the fifth Chinese naval escort flotilla, which just completed the escort mission in the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters to protect commercial ships from pirate attacks.Chinese Ambassador to Greece Luo Linquan and some 200 Chinese nationals came to the port to welcome the arrival of the two Chinese warships. BEIJING, Aug.6 (Xinhua)-- China's Ministry of Finance announced Friday it will float a batch of 273-day book-entry treasury bonds worth 10 billion yuan (1.48 billion U.S. dollars) next week.A statement on the ministry's website said the bonds will be sold at 98.62 yuan per bill, with an annual yield of 1.88 percent.The bill will be sold to the public from Aug. 9 to 11, and become tradable in the exchange markets since Aug. 13, according to the statement.The interest is to be calculated on August 9.This is the 10th batch of its kind launched by the ministry this year.
