Two U.S. senators have filed an amendment to legislation that would replace Columbus Day with Juneteenth Day as a federal holiday.“In response to a bipartisan effort to give federal workers another day of paid leave by designating Juneteenth a federal holiday, we have offered a counterproposal that does not put us further in debt,” said Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) in a press release. “We support celebrating emancipation with a federal holiday, but believe we should eliminate a current holiday in exchange. We chose Columbus Day as a holiday that is lightly celebrated, and least disruptive to Americans’ schedules.”U.S. Senator John Cornyn announced mid-June that he was introducing a bipartisan bill that would make Juneteenth a federal holiday.“Juneteenth is a day in our history that redefined the meaning of freedom and equality in America,” said Senator James Lankford (R-OK). “Throughout our history, we have strived to become a more perfect union and Juneteenth was a huge step in attaining that goal. We should celebrate these strides on the federal level while remaining cognizant of the impact the existing 10 federal holidays have on federal services and local businesses."According to Johnson and Lankford, a single federal holiday costs an estimated 0 million for paid time off for federal employees. To read the amendment, click here. This story originally reported on tmj4.com. 1405

United Airlines said it's suspending a program that transports pets in cargo holds. It will stop accepting new reservations for its PetSafe program, though it will honor any reservations made through March 20, the airline said.Passengers can still carry small pets with them in carry-on luggage. The suspension comes as United reviews its pet transport policies, a process that should be completed by May 1, United said.United has experienced some major pet-traveling disasters recently. Last week, a small dog died after it was put in the overhead bin on a United flight. Then the carrier mistakenly shipped a Kansas-bound dog to Japan, and in a separate incident, it had to divert another flight to Akron, Ohio, after the airline realized a pet had been loaded onto the flight in error.The-CNN-Wire 806

VAN NUYS, Calif. (CNS) - Felony charges were filed Tuesday against a woman who allegedly tried to snatch NFL legend Joe Montana's 9-month-old granddaughter from a Malibu home.Sodsai Predpring Dalzell, 39, is set to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon in a Van Nuys courtroom on charges of attempted kidnapping and first-degree residential burglary with a person present, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.Montana flagged down deputies from the sheriff's Lost Hills station about 5 p.m. Saturday. He told them his 9-month-old grandchild had been sleeping in a playpen in the living room when an unknown woman entered the home in the 22100 block of Pacific Coast Highway, removed the baby and walked upstairs with the child in her arms."Mr. Montana and his wife Jennifer confronted the female, attempted to de-escalate the situation and asked for the suspect to give back their grandchild. A tussle ensued, and Mrs. Montana was able to safely pry the child out of the suspect's arms," according to a sheriff's statement.Deputies found Dalzell nearby and arrested her. She's being held in lieu of 0,000 bail. The 64-year-old Montana tweeted about the incident Sunday afternoon, saying, "Thank you to everyone who has reached out. Scary situation, but thankful that everybody is doing well. We appreciate respect for our privacy at this time." 1373

Tuesday is Election Day, and several companies are offering promotions and freebies in celebration of those exercising democracy. While there is nothing illegal about running promotions in conjunction with Election Day, federal laws prohibit companies and individuals from offering incentives for voting. That means any promotion that requires you to show an "I Voted" sticker could be in violation of 18 USC Sec. 597. The law states that any expenditure to a voter in exchange for a vote, or for withholding a vote for that matter, is in violation of the law and those giving away the expenditure is subject to a fine or arrest. The Field Museum in Chicago originally was going to offer free admission to those who showed an "I Voted" sticker, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Now, the offer is good for anyone in Illinois, regardless if you voted or not. Uber, which is among ride-sharing companies that are offering free rides to the polls through its app, said the following: "This offer is not intended to induce, nor is it conditioned on, the act of voting, refraining from voting or voting for or against any particular candidate, political party or measure."Lyft is also offering help for those looking for a ride to the polls. It will take 50 percent off the cost of a ride on Tuesday by using a promo code, which will be available on its app on Tuesday. Rental car service Zipcar is offering off a future ride for those who use its service on Election Day. If you're looking to use two wheels to get to the polls, Lime is offering 30-minute rentals of its scooters and bikes on Election Day. In the world of food, Potbelly is offering free cookies on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the only requirement being that you purchase an entree. Shake Shack is offering free French fries by either showing an "I voted" sticker or by using code "IVoted" on its app.  1938
