(KGTV) - Experts from the San Diego Zoo have been sent to Madagascar to help care for nearly 11,000 tortoises discovered in a massive poaching bust.The April 10 discovery by local police found the tortoises covering virtually every room in the raided home. The animals did not have access to food or water.Since the discovery, hundreds of the tortoises had died from dehydration and illness.RELATED: Tortoise with broken shell recovering after surgeryAuthorities believe the 10,976 tortoises discovered were part of illegal pet trading and planned for shipment to Asia. There, tortoises shells are highly prized, officials said.San Diego Zoo officials will help supply medical supplies, administer care, and general assistance, according to the zoo."Unfortunately we have had a number of situations in recent years where our staff has been called upon to assist animals that have been caught up in wildlife trafficking,” Kim Lovich, curator of reptiles at San Diego Zoo, said. "This is an overwhelming situation, where we recognize that every individual we save may make the difference between this species’ long-term survival and its extinction. We have to help."Crews are working to relocate the surviving tortoises to SOPTOM-Villages des Tortues, a 17-acre private wildlife facility in Ifaty, for further care.Zoo officials say radiated tortoise populations have declined more than 80 percent in the last 30 years. (KGTV) — A man taken into custody last week after he was involved in a San Marcos crash and authorities discovered a dead body in his pickup truck has been arrested for murder and turned over to Anaheim Police.Anaheim Police say Abdulaziz Munther Alubidy, 30, was booked into Anaheim Detention Facility and is being held without bail.The San Sheriff's Department says Alubidy was involved in a crash just after 4 p.m. late Friday at San Marcos Boulevard and Rancho Santa Fe in San Marcos. When deputies responded and looked inside his Toyota Tundra pickup truck, they discovered the body of 56-year-old Jessie Villesca of Anaheim.RELATED: One person is dead after car crash in San MarcosDeputies said Villesca's injuries indicated she was murdered. Alubidy was detained at the scene.Anaheim Police were contacted after deputies say they found evidence indicating Villesca had been killed near W. Corporate Way and N. (CNN) -- President Trump is giving most federal workers the gift of an extra day off this holiday season.The president issued an executive order Tuesday ordering that all executive departments and federal agencies close on Tuesday, December 24 in honor of Christmas Eve.The holidays for federal employees include Christmas Day, but not Christmas Eve.Certain employees, or "emergency employees," will have to work that day "for reasons of national security, defense, or other public need."News of an extra day off comes after Congress recently approved 12 weeks of paid parental leave for all federal employees for the first time in American history.
