A Seattle woman rinsed her sinuses with tap water. A year later, she died of a brain-eating amoeba.Her case is reported this week in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases.The 69-year-old, whose name was not given, had a lingering sinus infection. For a month, she tried to get rid of it using a neti pot with tap water instead of using sterile water, as is recommended.Neti pots are used to pour saline into one nostril and out of the other to irrigate the sinuses, usually to fight allergies or infections.According to the doctors who treated the woman, the non-sterile water that she used it thought to have contained Balamuthia mandrillaris, ?an amoeba that over the course of weeks to months can cause a very rare and almost always fatal infection in the brain.Once in her body, the amoeba slowly went about its deadly work.First, she developed a raised, red sore on the bridge of her nose. Doctors thought it was a rash and prescribed an antibiotic ointment, but that provided no relief. Over the course of a year, dermatologists hunted for a diagnosis.Then, the left side of the woman's body started shaking. She'd experienced a seizure that weakened her left arm. A CT scan showed an abnormal lesion in her brain that indicated she might have a tumor, so doctors sent a sample of tissue for testing.Over the next several days, additional scans revealed that whatever was happening in her brain was getting worse. The mass was growing, and new lesions were starting to show up.Finally, a neurosurgeon at Swedish Medical Center, where the woman was being treated, opened her skull to examine her brain and found that it was infected with amoebae.The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention rushed the anti-amoeba drug miltefosine to Seattle to try to save the woman's life, but she fell into a coma and died.According to the CDC, most cases of Balamuthia mandrillaris aren't diagnosed until immediately before death or after death, so doctors don't have a lot of experience treating the amoeba and know little about how a person becomes infected.The amoeba was discovered in 1986. Since 1993, the CDC says, there have been at least 70 cases in the United States.As in the Seattle woman's case, the infections are "almost uniformly fatal," with a death rate of more than 89%, according to the doctors who treated her and the CDC.The amoeba is similar to Naegleria fowleri, which has been the culprit in several high-profile cases.In 2011, Louisiana health officials warned residents not to use nonsterilized tap water in neti pots after the deaths of two people who were exposed to Naegleria fowleri while flushing their nasal passages. An official urged users to fill the pots only with distilled, sterile or previously boiled water, and to rinse and dry them after each use."Improper nasal irrigation has been reported as a method of infection for the comparably insidious amoeba," the doctors say in the research paper about the Seattle woman. "This precedent led us to suspect the same route of entry for the ... amoeba in our case."The woman's doctors say they weren't able to definitely link the infection to her neti pot, as the water supply to her home was not tested for the amoeba. They hope her case will let other doctors know to consider an amoeba infection if a patient gets a sore or rash on the nose after rinsing their sinuses.Kristen Maki, a spokeswoman for the Washington State Department of Health, said in an email that "Large municipal water supplies ... have robust source water protection programs" and treatment programs, and she noted that "Well protected groundwater supplies are logically expected to be free of any such large amoeba" such as Balamuthia. 3746

A Utah man died flying a Cessna 535 citation jet into his home, where his wife and her son were, early Monday, hours after he was arrested for domestic violence, police said.The incident began at American Fork Canyon, about 35 miles south of Salt Lake City, when the Utah County Sheriff's Office received calls about a domestic violence situation between Duane Youd and his wife on Sunday night, according to Payson Police Department spokeswoman Sgt. When Youd asked if he could go back to his home and pick up some belongings, he was escorted by an officer and left the home in his vehicle, police said."He then evidently went to the airplane" after leaving his home, Sandoval said.Around 2:30 a.m., Payson authorities received a call that a plane had crashed into Youd's home.Youd was a professional pilot, Sandoval said. He flew for VanCon, a construction company that owned the plane. Youd was the only person who flew it, Sandoval said.Youd's wife and her son were in the home at the time of the crash, but were able to escape Sandoval said.Neighbors who saw the crash said they couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe it," said Buhler.Public records obtained by CNN affiliate KSTU-TV showed Youd lived at the home where the plane crashed, and he and his wife had bought the home last year. A Memphis woman wants answers after getting a nearly ,000 dollar bill from Memphis Light, Gas and Water.Florence Ford said the utility insisted the astronomical amount is no mistake.They told her a water leak led to the 5-figure bill, but Ford doesn't think MLGW's story is adding up.The 60-year-old brings in just enough every month from disability checks to pay her rent and insurance costs."I had four blood clots, I’ve got nerve damage on the right side and I had a stroke," she said.So, when Ford opened up her bill late January for ,423, she was floored.Her normally bill had skyrocketed to ,995 for water alone, just for one month."What the hell? If I’m on a fixed income, how can I pay a ,000 water bill?" she said.Ford called MLGW and said she was told the massive bill was due to a water leak on her property, and that she’d need a plumber to fix it."Some pipe or something had come loose and they took care of it," she said.According to Ford's bill, her water usage during the month of December was 4,983 CCFs (centum cubic feet). That’s close to 4 million gallons, which is enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool almost six times.MLGW told Ford a representative called her and left a note on her door, but she said before getting that bill, no one from the utility ever reached out to tell her there was a problem."Didn’t call, didn’t leave a voicemail, said they left a note on the door. No note on the door," she said.A friend and former lawyer told Ford it would be impossible not to realize that much water was leaking in front of her home."He said if I had a ,000 water bill, my house should have been floating down the street somewhere," she said.Ford said she spoke to someone at MLGW again, who suggested she file for bankruptcy.The next month she got another bill, leaving her owing nearly ,000, which is just a couple hundred dollars shy of what she brings in in an entire year."If I don’t pay that, they’re going to cut my utilities off, so I’m going to be without utilities," Ford said. "What am I supposed to do? Sit in the dark?"She's also on a breathing machine, which needs electricity to operate.MLGW agreed to credit Ford’s account ,980, but she says that’s not good enough."I think they should squash it. A man was accidentally killed by a chainsaw Monday while helping a neighbor cut tree branches during Hurricane Irma cleanup.Authorities say a branch became entangled with the chainsaw. It kicked up and cut Wilfredo Hernandez's throat.Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded and used a harness to lower him from the tree, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.The map below shows where the incident happened. 419

  

A North County resident claims her neighbor, a local politician, is using his power to target her.She said Oceanside Deputy Mayor Chuck Lowery is getting preferential treatment when he files a code complaint because of his position at the city.Team 10 discovered Lowery has a well-documented history of filing complaints and turned up emails he sent voicing his concerns about her short-term rental property.“I don't believe that it's right that the deputy mayor would utilize his political position to contact other departments and the head of those departments to start a harassment campaign,” said Alexandra McIntosh.McIntosh purchased her home back in 2012 as part of her retirement plan.Shortly after she bought it, she turned the property into full-time, short-term vacation rental.She said the income brought by the rental offsets the house payments and helps the city of Oceanside make money.“It has been fully booked since early March,” she said.McIntosh told 10News she stays at the property when it isn’t booked and plans to move in after she retires.To help with storage, McIntosh said she put a shed up in the backyard."I paid to have them custom make this to conform with the City of Oceanside,” she said. “It was something that would go along with my house.”According to the City of Oceanside’s website, the shed could be no larger than 120 square feet, or it needed a permit.McIntosh said she called to verify that is the case. However, after it went up, there was a complaint.Complaint records from the city state, “CBC 105.1 Permits Required - Submit plans/building permit application to Building Division for review. If any work requiring a permit is in progress, it must immediately cease until a valid building permit is issued.”There were also questions whether or not McIntosh was using the shed as an extra room, something she denied. For a period of time, it was posted on Airbnb as a third room.“I’m not using it as a habitable space,” she said.After a July visit to the property, a representative from the code department determined the shed violates the city's zoning ordinance and will need to be brought into compliance.McIntosh disagrees with the decision telling Team 10 that’s not what someone in the department initially told her. She plans to fight that decision. According to documents provided by the City of Oceanside, the person who complained was listed as Chuck Lowery.McIntosh said Lowery is one of her neighbors.City records show it’s the not first time Lowery has been listed as the complainant on a city code violation complaint.Team 10 uncovered emails from March 2017 when Lowery had a grievance with barking dogs in his neighborhood.The email chain shows he sent an email to the Oceanside city manager writing in part, “Can the City notify the OWNERS [sic] that they’re renting these places to people who are up at all hours whenever they want (hey, they’re on vacation) AND they leave their dogs barking, untended, for days on end?The neighbor sent me an email again today about the barking dog. I was here and I heard it too. The addresses of the two houses with short-term renters and dogs are XX and XX. It’s NOT worth the TOT tax but I sure hope these two people get noise complaints. I can get the other neighbors to sign at least one.”For context TOT means Transient Occupancy Tax, a tax collected by the city on short-term rentals. All hotels and vacation rentals in the City of Oceanside pay an assessment of 1.5 percent of their room rental revenue.The email chain shows the city manager offered to send the notice out herself writing in part, “I’m prepared to do it but am unsure of who does what between code and OPD.” The emails show she eventually has the code department do it.A code department manager responded in an email: "I’m never too busy for the City Manager. Your concerns are first priority. They will go out today.”Emails obtained by Team 10 show a few days after complaining about the dogs, Lowery wrote about another neighbor’s property calling their tenants “disgusting.”This time from a city email account the deputy mayor requests that "the letter from Code to the owners and agent at XX be ramped up and that their permit for vacation party rentals be denied or revoked or whatever."A day later an Oceanside employee writes to the code manager: “This is the second complaint from Councilmember Lowery. The City Manager is interested in creating a case file whereby actions escalate and could lead to the revocation of the short-term rental registration.” Team 10 discovered emails Lowery sent about possible code issues dating back to 2016.Deputy Mayor Lowery denied all on-camera interview requests.His aide, Don Greene, said the deputy mayor would only answer questions through email and sent over this written statement: 4811
