THE HAGUE, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- As the 2012 deadline for the complete destruction of chemical weapons approaches, China Monday called for parties to demonstrate their political will and speed up the destruction process.During the 15th session of the Conference of the States Parties of OPCW, Ambassador Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said the Chemical Weapons Convention has been playing "an important role" in removing the threat of chemical weapons.Zhang said: "The timely completion of destruction activities constitutes a core obligation under the Convention. The destruction of chemical weapons is the most important, pressing and overriding task for the OPCW at present and in the years to come."

BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong met here Thursday with experts of the International Evaluation Committee on National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC)'s Funding and Management Performance.The Chinese government attaches great importance to the development of science and technology as well as the supervision and management of scientific funding, said Liu.She said by implementing the National Outline for Medium and Long Term Science and Technology Development and other supporting policies, China was gradually increasing investment in this area and continuing to promote technological innovation.Inviting prestigious international experts to evaluate the performance of scientific funding and management is very significant for the founding of the performance evaluation system as well as the development and improvement of the scientific funding system, she said.Liu said the establishment of the scientific funding system was a successful trial for the reform of China's science and technology system.She praised the positive role played by the NSFC in the past 25 years and hoped the experts would provide objective analysis and evaluation on the NSFC's Funding and Management Performance.She also asked the NSFC and other relevant departments to create favorable conditions for the experts' evaluation work.

BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner said Thursday that prices for agricultural produce and materials continued to fall from Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, with some varieties seeing big drops. Food prices monitored in 36 major cities fell 0.2 percent from the previous week, said the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). Vegetable prices fell the most, with wholesale prices dropping for the fourth consecutive week and 16 out of 18 staple vegetables falling in price from early November, it said. Radish prices went down 32 percent, Chinese cabbage 28.6 percent, and rape 27.3 percent. Prices of lettuces, cucumbers, celery, cabbages and eggplants all dropped by more than 20 percent. Meanwhile, vegetable prices in 18 of the 36 cities were down by more than 15 percent on a monthly basis, said the NDRC. Prices in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province, went down 35.8 percent, those in Xiamen, southeast China's Fujian Province, fell 31.9 percent, while in Haikou City, capital of Hainan Province in south China, prices dropped 27.2 percent. Also, prices in eight cities, including Shenyang, Shenzhen and Ningbo, were all down by more than 20 percent. Prices of production materials fell for a third consecutive week, according to the NDRC. Compared with the previous week, prices of major production materials fell 0.4 percent, up 0.3 percentage points. Urea prices moved down 1.5 percent week on week, while natural gas prices dropped 1.3 percent week on week. Prices of aluminum fell 0.8 percent, and those of rubber were down by 0.2 percent. Official figures showed that the country's grain output rose 2.9 percent year on year in 2010 to 546.41 million tonnes, marking the seventh consecutive year of growth for China's grain output. Food prices account for about a third of the weight of China's consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, and the falling prices in farm produce and production materials are expected to ease some inflationary pressure. China's CPI rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent year on year in October and the hike was largely attributed to a 10.1 percent surge in food prices. ISLAMABAD, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on Saturday night called for restraint from all parties concerned to avoid escalation of tension on the Korean Peninsula.During a phone conversation with Lavrov, Yang, who is accompanying Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on a visit to Pakistan, said the situation on the peninsula has become tense recently and may further deteriorate.China firmly opposes any actions to cause tension and worsen the situation, and demands both sides on the peninsula show calmness and restraint, carry out dialogue and contact, and completely avoid any actions that would fuel the tension, Yang said.China hopes other concerned parties would do more to help ease the situation on the peninsula, he added.Yang said China insists that all parties concerned conduct dialogue and consultation, and seek a peaceful settlement of the dispute.China is willing to keep close communication and coordination with Russia to prevent the situation from deteriorating and getting out of control, and help maintain peace and stability on the peninsula and in Northeast Asia.Lavrov, for his part, said Russia attaches high importance to the developments on the peninsula, adding his country has expressed great concern to relevant countries and demanded utmost calmness and restraint from all parties concerned.Russia is willing to work with China to make active efforts to reduce the tension on the peninsula, he said.South Korea has declared plans for a live shell artillery drill in the tense waters southwest of Yeonpyeong Island on a selected date from Dec. 18-21 depending on weather conditions.The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Friday urged Seoul to immediately stop its plans for the shelling exercise, warning it would deliver a second and third "unpredicted self-defense counterattack" that would be bigger and more powerful than the previous one.South Korea and the DPRK exchanged artillery fires near the Yeonpyeong Island on Nov. 23, which killed four South Koreans.

WUHAN, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said Monday that Premier Wen Jiabao's imminent visit to Russia and the 15th regular meeting between the Chinese and Russian prime ministers would further promote the bilateral relationship.Yang made the remarks while meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov at the 10th Meeting of the Foreign Ministers of China, Russia and India in central China's Wuhan city.However, Yang did not give a specific date for the prime ministers' meeting in Russia.During his meeting with Lavrov, Yang praised progress of the development of China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination this year. He said China was willing to work with Russia to comprehensively carry out the consensus of their leaders.Next year, the two countries would hold grand celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia treaty of good neighborliness, friendship and cooperation, he said.He thanked Russia for its firm support to China on issues related to Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.Lavrov said Russia placed special emphasis on promoting the bilateral strategic partnership of coordination, and was willing to enhance bilateral and international cooperation with China.Later Monday, Yang accompanied Lavrov to lay a wreath at the tomb of martyrs of the Soviet Air Force who died in World War II.
