CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Four people were displaced when a fire damaged their South Bay home Sunday morning, authorities said.Dispatchers were alerted at about 9:20 a.m. to a fire at a house near the intersection of Madden and Donax avenues, according to the San Diego Police Department. The area is just west of Beyer Boulevard.Firefighters found a small fire in the attic, and were able to get everyone out of the house and extinguish the flames, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department official said. The cause of the fire wasn't immediately known. The Red Cross was called to assist with finding shelter for the home's occupants, the Fire-Rescue official said. 662

(KGTV) — A South Bay mother was alarmed to find a man standing over her daughter's bed early Saturday.Police say the mom discovered the strange man just after 6:30 a.m. standing over her 10-year-old daughter as she slept at their home on Madison Ave. The man ran past the mom and out the back door, running south on Madison Ave., police added.The woman's daughter was not harmed. Police say there were at least two other young girls in the house as well.Police said the suspect may have gained entry through an unlocked back door.Police are searching for the suspect, described as an either white or Hispanic man, with a bald head, and possibly tattoos on his face.Anyone with information is asked to call Chula Vista Police at 619-691-5151. 769

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — Chula Vista could be the next city to make outdoor dining easier for several restaurants.The city says it’s established a free permitting process for Third Avenue businesses, between E and G Streets, to move indoor operations outside amid a new round of coronavirus-related closures across the state.The businesses will be allowed to expand into the public right-of-way, giving them the option to create a large dining area while adhering to social distancing measures.“This will provide the businesses outdoor options using tables and canopies while having social distancing and queuing areas for sidewalk cafes and curb cafes. Businesses on Third Avenue would be able to create a larger outdoor dining experience as public health mandates currently have indoor dining closed,” a city release stated.The city also approved a temporary closure of Third Avenue on the weekends, between E and G St., through January 2021 for businesses to expand outdoor dining. This plan would have to be approved by the Third Avenue Village Association to go into effect, the city says.This week, the city also approved a .5 million grant for small businesses to be reimbursed for the costs of business interruptions due to pandemic closures. The grant, called Chula Vista CARES, is funded through the federal CARES Act funds.For-profit businesses located in commercial or industrial space in the city, with ten or fewer employees, and who were required to closed due to COVID-19 can apply between July 20, at 7 a.m. and July 24, at 7 p.m. for a portion of the grant. The maximum a business can receive will be ,000. Chuck Yeager, the famed World War II fighter pilot who was the first pilot to break the speed of sound, died on Monday at the age of 97, Yeager's wife Victoria Yeager said on his Twitter account.According to family, Yeager died shortly before 9 p.m. ET on Monday."An incredible life well lived, America’s greatest Pilot, & a legacy of strength, adventure, & patriotism will be remembered forever," Victoria Yeager tweeted.Yeager earned a number of awards for his service to America, including the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Air Force Distinguished Service Medal and Legion of Merit, among others. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Ronald Reagan in 1985. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District is working with teachers to prepare for distance learning if and when classes resume after Spring Break. The district is currently closed because of coronavirus concerns, but district officials tell 10News plans are already in motion to figure out a way to complete the school year. District spokesperson Manny Rubio tells 10News the district is looking at distance learning, which can mean a number of things. Teachers could either teach virtually from home or provide students with learning material. Rubio says a majority of students already do a lot of online work and many of them have take home devices. The plans include addressing concerns that some students might not have devices or internet at their homes. Wednesday night, the district and the teachers union sent out a letter with guidance and information for teachers on how to move forward. All schools were deep cleaned and sanitized. Some schools are allowing teachers to enter their classrooms to get whatever materials they may need. For now, the plan is to have teachers return from Spring Break and allow for 2-3 days of planning before giving any direction to students and their parents. Officials are also keeping a close eye on updates from the state and the department of education. In the meantime, the district is still offering meal distribution while students are out of school. 1438
