LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas leader wants the city's airport renamed amid a wave of racial unrest and calls for removing brands, tributes and other items with racially-charged origins.McCarran International Airport, located next to the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, is arguably one of the most prominent places in Southern Nevada.In 1948 it was named for Sen. Patrick McCarran, a powerhouse in both state and national politics.McCarran represented Nevada from 1933 until his death in 1954 in Washington, D.C.During his time in public office, he was considered one of the biggest supporters of aviation, which was still getting off the ground in the 1930s, and sponsored key legislation that helped shape the modern air travel industry.However, historians have pointed out that McCarran's legacy is marred by racism, xenophobia and antisemitism."Pat McCarran was an evil man," Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom said.Segerblom wants to scrub McCarran's name from the airport and introduced a bill in the Nevada Legislature in 2017 to do just that."To have the first thing when you come to Nevada (be) McCarran Airport — when you look at his history, that's just unacceptable," Segerblom said.Segerblom wanted to rename the airport for longtime Nevada Sen. Harry Reid (D), but the bill ultimately failed."First off, I want to get rid of the name, but secondly, I want to honor Sen. Reid, he is really the father of modern Nevada," Segerblom said.There was push back, and Segerblom says he believes opponents felt using Reid's name as a replacement was too politically partisan."Our kids grow up hearing about McCarran airport; they don't know what that its, but they don't realize we are honoring somebody who didn't believe I should even be a citizen or have the right to vote, that's wrong," Segerblom said.Critics who are opposed to renaming the airport say McCarran was a critical part of history, and attempting to scrub his name from Las Vegas will not change that. But Segerblom argues that continuing to honor McCarran is unacceptable."We are a multicultural, multi-ethnic city, and for our airport to be named after a racist anti-Semite and other things is just unacceptable," Segerblom said.A name change would require a majority four-person vote by the Clark County Commission.If the name changes in the near future, estimates put the cost around million to replace signs, logos, letterheads, graphics and other items associated with the airport.Segerblom says he would raise funds privately to make the change happen.This story was originally published by Joe Bartels on KTNV in Las Vegas. 2611

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) - On March 23, former "Showstoppers" dancer accused casino mogul Steve Wynn of sexual harassment. Nearly two weeks later, Wynn is now suing the dancer's lawyer, Lisa Bloom, for defamation.According to Bloom, Wynn would often visit rehearsals for "Showstoppers," where he would instruct the female dancers to "strip down to bras and panties, put on heels, and apply extra makeup so as to be sexually appealing."But Wynn denies ever asking the performers to strip down. The lawsuit against Bloom states that Wynn was "almost always accompanied by either his wife and/or other individuals." Additionally, the suit mentioned that Wynn's attendance at rehearsals was welcomed because "he was enthusiastic and encouraging."Wynn is suing Bloom for ,000 in damages.Correction: An earlier version of this misidentified Lisa Bloom as the dancer in this case when she is actually the dancer's lawyer. LEE COUNTY, Fla., — Your child gives it their all, both time and effort, yet struggles to complete a homework assignment.Another child scribbles their name on a piece of paper and turns it in.Technically, both students could get the same grade according to an investigation by Scripps station WFTX in Fort Myers, Florida that’s uncovering the tactics teachers and administrators are using to boost low grades.WFTX's Tony Sadiku obtained emails from a Harns Marsh Middle School assistant principal to teachers asking for everyone’s commitment to follow the school’s grading policy, '50% minimum, 0 = 50' in a practice known as minimum grading.Teachers say students who would otherwise get a zero are given between a 50 to 59 percent regardless of whether they prove they’ve learned anything. If a student doesn’t turn in a single assignment all quarter, they’ve earned a 50% at some schools. The principal at Harns Marsh told teachers in 2016 via email, “A 60 for our students that are trying but are several grade levels behind academically is fair.”Some parents said they disagree.  “I don’t believe it’s fair, by no means,” said one parent of a 7th grader at the school.Several parents said they've never heard of minimum grading.  Even some Lee County School Board members said they were unaware of the school’s grading practice.  “I know of no such policy, formal or informal, in Lee County schools,” said Board Member Cathleen Morgan.“I am not aware of such a policy,” said Board Member Dr. Jane Kuckel. “I think every parent needs to be aware of the grading policy,” said Mark Castellano, a former Lee County public school teacher. The Lee County School District said minimum grading is not a District policy, but a practice implemented by some schools and teachers to encourage struggling students. “Often times a zero can completely deteriorate a grade and they will lose interest because they think there’s no way for them to get a passing grade,”  said Dr. Wanda Creel, the District’s Chief Academic Officer. “When students will grasp those concepts is really is on a personalized individualized basis. Minimum grading allows students to stay engaged while still learning and for teachers to continue to work with them through the process.”Creel said the goal is for students to pass on their own.But does a better grade on a report card mean students are actually learning?While students may have a better shot at passing their classes because of minimum grading, numbers from the Florida Department of Education show many still aren’t testing well.At Harns Marsh Middle school, 38 percent passed the English Language Arts Florida Standards Assessment test in 2017. In the entire District, 53 percent of middle schoolers passed.Harns Marsh kids also had lower numbers in the FSA Mathematics Test. Only 35 percent of kids passed last year compared to 51 percent of middle schoolers in the District who passed.Middle school students who don’t pass are still promoted to the next grade level, but may be more likely to struggle down the road.Statistically, 8th graders are more likely to be retained than 6th and 7th graders according to the Florida Department of Education.“Teachers will begin to think that I need to retain because this child doesn’t seem to be able to tackle the issues in high school,” Creel said. “A retained 8th grader can be one of the highest indicators of a dropout. We are finding strategies to help our overaged 8th graders to get the credits they need so they can move on to high school.”“You have kids that are absolutely motivated and they love learning. Those kids you rarely have to do anything. Then you have kids that struggle. They struggle with their home life. They struggle with their socioeconomic situations,” Castellano said.But is adjusting a student’s grade closer to passing the solution?“What are we teaching kids in terms of their personal responsibility for their education?” Castellano said.Castellans says in his nearly 30+ years of teaching, not once has he used the practice. “What they’re saying is for those kids the grade is irrelevant, it’s not going to motivate them,” said Robert Kenny, a professor of education at Florida Gulf Coast University. School Board Member Jane Kuckel supports minimum grading policies at some schools.“All students learn and thrive in different ways," she said. "The outcomes are non-negotiable. The process for getting there needs to be tailored to the achievement levels and learning styles of the students.”One parent argues her child earning the grade matters more.“It’s a big deal cause he needs to learn and he needs to make it in this world," the parent said. "The world is not going to give him a free pass forever and they don’t need to learn that in middle school.” The District said they plan to set up committees next fall to evaluate how minimum grading is being done to come up with a more uniform approach across the District.  5113

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- La Mesa officials Tuesday released documentation which details the May 30-31 protests that evolved into riots, looting, and property destruction in the city.City officials said they released their timeline as part of a “commitment to transparency.” According to officials, the timeline of events is “primarily based on law enforcement incident logs throughout the day.”In the document, officials noted the La Mesa Police Department and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office were aware of rallies scheduled around the county for May 30 and began their preparations for potential protests on May 28.A peaceful rally with about 200 protesters took place May 29 outside of La Mesa police headquarters, with a larger event planned for the following day.Police worked with sheriff’s officials and the California Highway Patrol to oversee the May 30 protest.READ: La Mesa protest turns violent with fires, lootingAccording to the timeline of events, a peaceful protest began in the city just after 2 p.m. About 90 minutes later, the city informed residents via a Nixle message and tweet of the protest’s impact near University Avenue and Baltimore Drive. Residents were urged to avoid the area.By 3:30 p.m., protesters made their way onto Interstate 8, forcing the closure of eastbound traffic.According to the city’s timeline, at around 4 p.m. “a group of protesters on the freeway began getting more aggressive. Some protesters began throwing bottles at officers stationed on the westbound side of the freeway. Officers watching a protester’s Instagram Live video heard her announce that they were going to raid Walmart at the Grossmont Center mall; a group jumped over the wall into the center near the Game Stop.”Meanwhile, 1,000 people marched on Murray Drive and about 200 protesters gathered outside a LMPD station at the Civic Center.Authorities began receiving numerous calls of protests “morphing into violence and destruction,” including a 911 caller who reported she “was struck in the face by a protester in a restaurant parking lot.”City officials said an order to disperse was given to those gathering at the La Mesa police station just after 4:45 p.m. However, the city’s timeline noted, “In the next several minutes, a riot begins to take shape, with the U.S. flag in front of the police station set on fire, people throwing rocks at the building and at officers, and vandalism of the station. A police vehicle is attacked at the intersection of Baltimore and University.”The police station’s front doors are reinforced by the LMPD Special Response Team. Responding sheriff’s deputies “are greeted with rocks and water bottles being thrown by rioters. One deputy is hit by a rock,” according to city officials’ timeline.Through the rest of the evening, sheriff’s officials called on other law enforcement agencies to assist with the growing unrest. “Over the course of the event, approximately 250 officers from jurisdictions throughout the county are deployed to assist La Mesa. Jurisdictions sending aid include San Diego Sherriff’s Office (SDSO), Carlsbad Police, Chula Vista Police, the San Diego Community College District, SDSU Police, National City Police, Oceanside Police and San Diego Harbor Police.”Between 5:09 p.m.-5:30 p.m., “multiple dispersal orders are given as people attempt to breach the walls of the station and throw bottles and rocks at officers.”Officials said, “At approximately 5:30 p.m., officers attempt to use bullhorns and an armored vehicle (Bearcat) equipped with a public address system to issue dispersal orders. The Bearcat and other police vehicles are attacked and vandalized with officers inside. With rocks going into the broken Bearcat windows, officers are forced to deploy a pepperball to free the vehicle and officers.”About 30 minutes later, tear gas is deployed and pepperballs are used “as rock-throwing and destruction continues unabated.”As efforts to disperse the crowd continue, a fire station is attacked.According to the city, dispersal orders were given at all protest locations around the city at around 6:40 p.m., with San Diego police’s ABLE helicopter helping to deliver the orders.“With rioters not heeding the dispersal orders, officers continue to deploy gas and pepperballs in an attempt to disperse crowds. Individuals break into City Hall. There is an apparent arson attempt at the American Legion (VFW) hall and the U.S. flag in front is set on fire. Two squads are deployed from Command Post 2 to form arrest teams. When they arrive, their cars are attacked,” the city’s timeline said.At around 7:35 p.m., ABLE reported that “City Hall appears to be on fire,” and officers were sent to the building to disperse crowds and secure the facility.City officials said it was around 8:16 p.m. when “a beanbag round is fired from approximately 40 yards away toward a woman (later identified as Leslie Furcron) who was observed throwing an object an object at SDSO deputies. An officer reports that a female is down; within 30 seconds of the report, Ms. Furcron is carried away by members of the crowd, loaded into a vehicle and driven away. LEMON GROVE (KGTV) -- People are being asked to avoid a busy intersection in Lemon Grove following a natural gas line break Monday afternoon.The affected area is along the 6900 block of Federal Avenue, officials said.Fire officials issued the warning at around 2:45 p.m. They are warning people to avoid the area for about two hours while crew work to repair the break.It's unclear what caused the break.Stay with 10News for updates on this developing story.   488
