(CNN) -- Maui residents who evacuated their homes because of a wildfire are allowed to return, the County of Maui announced Friday on Facebook.But Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino cautioned that, "This fire is still an active threat to our community, and residents are urged to remain vigilant of changing conditions," in the same post.Firefighters will continue to monitor the blaze that has consumed an estimated 10,000 acres of fallow former sugar cane and dry brush, according the county.The fire was reported Thursday morning at 10:42 a.m. local time near the intersection of Waiko Road and Kuihelani Highway.The County of Maui activated its Emergency Operations Center in the morning. By afternoon, the flames were burning out of control and emergency officials sent a mobile alert warning nearby residents to evacuate.More than 600 people fled as the blaze scorched 3,000 acres, the mayor's office said. The Maui Humane Society moved its animals in crates and kennels to a nearby high school.Helicopters were grounded after sunset, and they are expected to return to making air drops after sunrise, according to a news release from the county.Oprah Winfrey has a home in the county, and tweeted a local resident to confirm that she's given officials fighting the fire access to her private road. "A big mahalo to Oprah for giving Maui County access to your private road for use to assist in the Maui fire," Hawaii Gov. David Ige tweeted.Flights at Kahului Airport were briefly diverted, but operations have returned to normal. The fire affected access to the airport, which was operating on emergency generators. (KGTV) -- A strong warning from the mother of a La Jolla teenager injured in a deadly car crash on the way to Coachella.10News spoke with Eva Cerciello at the hospital where her daughter is recovering. Doctors have taken out her feeding tube and she is now awake.Sadly, her cousin was killed in the crash while the driver walked away with minor injuries. Cerciello says she’s been relying on prayers and positive thinking for strength.As more San Diegans head to Indio for weekend two of the Coachella music festival,Cerciello has a harsh warning that they shouldn’t put themselves in danger.She nearly lost her daughter last week. “She's like a miracle,” Cerciello said. Manuela Cerciello-Rahbari, 16, suffered severe brain damage when the BMW she was in with her cousin and a friend who was driving veered off the road.They slammed into two trees on I-10, 40 miles away from the festival. “Their main goal was to be there at 7 a.m.,” Cerciello said.They left around 3 a.m., but never made it. “The driver fell asleep while driving. They were both asleep, my niece and my daughter,” she said.Cerciello says she even called to warn them. “If you're tired, you need to stop. You don't keep on going,” she said. “You can’t challenge your body.”Their car was part of a caravan with friends and Cerciello feels peer pressure played a deadly role. “I know the kids were texting ‘speed up, speed up’ because we have all the messages.” Now, she's passing along her own message to other parents and their children.“Parents, they think ‘Don't drink. Don't drive. Don't do drugs…and everything will be fine.’ No, not everything will be fine,” Cerciello said.To be clear.. no drugs or alcohol were involved the crash, but she just wants people to see the reality of poor-decision making-- and says be smart.“You will never have the same life again. Never. Never. Because even if physically you are ok, psychologically you will never be the same.”While Cerciello knows her daughter's future is unclear... “I need to be strong. If I'm not strong, who's gonna be strong?”She doesn't want anyone else to experience her pain. (KGTV) -- A South Bay woman is mourning the death from COVID-19 of her boyfriend and her 'second chance' at love.Derik Williams started feeling sick in early July."Felt very fatigued, no cough," said Carol Althoff.Five days later, Althoff, his girlfriend of four years, brought him to the ER."Outside, they took his temperature and it was 101°.Williams was admitted and put on a sleep apnea CPAP device to help him breathe. A few days later, she got a call."He called home and he was his old self. 'Hi, babe, how are you?'" said Althoff.She was expecting a call the next day about him coming home.Instead, a doctor called about Williams needing to be placed on a ventilator. She talked to Willliams on the phone."We cried together. We said our 'I love you.' It was extremely emotional," said Althoff.A few days later, William - a father of 4 and a grandfather - passed away, days before his 55th birthday. Althoff, whose first husband died of cancer, says she didn't think she would find love again until she met Williams a few years later."Derek was loving. He was happy and so giving," said Althoff.She says the Air Force veteran was always volunteering, whether it was for The Rock Church, Stand Down, or soup kitchens."It was part of who he was. He wanted to be a better person, better than the person he was yesterday," said Althoff.As for where the coronavirus came from, Althoff isn't sure. She says Williams was diligent about masks and mostly went to the grocery store and his work, an aerospace company where he worked as a forklift operator. Althoff is making an urgent plea to COVID-19 seriously."Please, wear your mask. (KGTV) – Federal investigators are continuing to look into the backgrounds and motives of the El Paso and Dayton shooting suspects to determine if the shootings were instances of hate crime that may have been inspired by the Poway synagogue shooting.<br /><br />The El Paso shooter was taken into custody after killing at least 20 at a Walmart store on Aug. 3. Investigators said the 21-year-old suspect pulled the trigger just 20 minutes after posting a racist manifesto.<br /> <br />Hours later, police in Dayton shot and killed a man who opened fire at a downtown entertainment district. Multiple people, including the gunman’s sister, died at the hands of the gunman.<br /> <br />Sociologist Dr. Pete Simi studies political extremism and violence at Chapman University. This attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas."<br /><br />Earlier this year, the suspect in the Poway synagogue shooting shared a similar message on 8chan in which he also praised the work of the New Zealand mosque shooter.<br /><br />"In some cases, they talk about is how you could've been more active, or you could've killed more people if they had done X-Y-Z," Simi said. "Or they're discussing the relative merits of this type of violence and pros and cons. It's really a cesspool environment."<br /><br />At this point, the Dayton suspect's motive has not been confirmed. But he too is a young, lone-acting shooter who wore body armor. FBI investigators are now digging into his digital background to find answers.<br /><br />"What may connect them though is there may be some kind of copycat aspect to it," Simi said.<br /><br />In light of the mass shootings, Frederick Brennan, the founder of 8chan, demanded the site be shut down.<br /><br />He said he created the website in 2013 as a free speech forum, but relinquished ownership in 2015. 2826

(KGTV) — Disney officials say the company's California parks are prepared to reopen as soon as the state gives guidance for theme parks to open their doors.During a roundtable discussion with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday, Disney World’s chief operating officer Jim MacPhee said the California theme parks are "ready to roll" once they are given the chance to reopen.“Disneyland has been ready to roll since July awaiting guidance from the state's governor on what the reopening protocols will be,” said MacPhee.RELATED: SeaWorld San Diego prepares to reopen with Zoo Days eventOfficials from Universal Studios who were also at the roundtable echoed the same preparedness."We're awaiting our park in Hollywood, as with Disney and SeaWorld, with respect to the state of California and the governor and when we'll be able to reopen. Disneyland, California Adventure, and Universal Studios have all been shuttered since March due to the pandemic. Disney officials had rolled out a phased reopening plan and safety measures in June with the assumption they would have guidance by July, but delayed the plans when it became clear the state was not issuing guidance anytime soon.MacPhee said one of the challenges is convincing state leadership, and eventually potential guests, that the parks' safety precautions to prevent to spread of COVID-19 will be effective."I think it's driving awareness, driving a strong focus on how safe our environment is, and having people roll in," MacPhee said.SeaWorld officials were also present at the meeting.
