SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Union workers rallied Wednesday across California after notices went out to hundreds of University of California workers who will be temporarily laid off.About 200 University of California, San Diego Housing, Dining and Hospitality employees will be temporarily laid off during the summer months."Like many other organizations, UC San Diego is facing financial losses as a result of the pandemic. In particular, Housing, Dining and Hospitality saw an 85% reduction in undergraduate housing for the 2020 spring quarter, and a 90% cancellation in summer season occupancy. HDH implemented numerous cost saving measures, including hiring freezes and project deferments, but due to a substantial decrease in summer duties, HDH made the difficult decision to place some of their staff members on temporary layoff for the summer months. We understand the pain and uncertainty this will cause during an already trying time. However, we must acknowledge and respond to the challenges our campus is facing, operationally and financially, as a result of the pandemic," a representative from UCSD said.While these employees mainly work with students, serving food, UCSD Health employees are concerned this is the tip of the iceberg and more layoffs are coming."I don't want to lose my benefits, I work too hard and I deserve it," Teri Taylor said. She was hired at 20-years-old and is now a Nursing Assistant."For me to be able to branch out on my own and make something of myself is amazing." Taylor said she grew up in a low income neighborhood and faced adversity.She's a member of local labor union AFSCME 3299.The union started the day with a cacophony of honking in the UCSD chancellor's neighborhood.Then, at noon they held rallies at UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest and Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla."We come here day in and day out and do the work basically and to know that we can be let go at any time, it's scary, it's sad. We're in the middle of a pandemic," Taylor said."You don't have to lay people off, there's work here, there's work at other campuses. This is a UC system throughout the state," she added.The University said, "DH has a tremendous appreciation for the dedication and contribution of their staff. Our hope is that the impacted employees—and the students they serve—can return to campus. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two people were found dead Sunday morning after authorities responded to multiple 911 calls of a capsized boat off the coast of Ocean Beach.Authorities received a call about the incident around 3:30 a.m. When they arrived, authorities found a 28-foot vessel overturned along the shore with two mean deceased nearby."About a 28 foot vessel overturned in the shore, on the sand," says SD Fire & Rescue Lt. Maureen Hodges. "We do have two victims that were down on the sand."The incident happened shortly after 3:30 Sunday morning. Customs and Border Protection officers told ABC 10News the boat capsized off the shore, throwing the two people into the water. There's still no word on if any other people were in the boat.Border Patrol also responded to the incident along with San Diego Police, lifeguards, and San Diego Fire-Rescue. CBP believes this is the latest incident to involve a human-smuggling effort gone horribly wrong.So far in the 2020 Fiscal Year, there have been 210 incidents involving these kind of "panga" boats off the coast of San Diego. The record was set in 2013, when CBP responded to 243 such incidents. With two months left in the fiscal year, 2020 is on pace to break the record.ABC 10News asked if the rise in panga boat incidents could be related to border closures because of the coronavirus, forcing would-be smugglers to turn to the water. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— A Point Loma boy must now walk to and from school after a thief stole his custom BMX bike. San Diego Police need the public's help to find the man who took the boy's prized possession. BMX riding is 9-year-old Bradley Ramos' favorite pastime. It's a passion that runs in the family. His father, Aaron, dabbled it in as a child. So did Bradley's cousin, Tyler."This bike was actually his cousin's bike when his cousin was his age. Now his cousin is 21 years old, so the bike has been in the family for a while," Ramos said. That was, until Memorial Day morning. Bradley's mother noticed the bike was missing from their front porch."My bike and my helmet got stolen," Bradley said. The family's security camera captured a man walking away with Bradley's bike. The video shows the young man with arm tattoos wearing a hat and backpack. He looks to be wearing glasses and a distinctive white watch."It kind of sucks because I have to get rides to school now when usually, I'd ride my bike and it's way quicker," Bradley said. The bike theft is the second in as many weeks for the Ramos family. Last Monday, thieves made off with at least ,500 worth of tools from Ramos' work truck. "Since that's been happening, we've been bringing the bike in, and we didn't do it just that one night, and it was gone," Ramos said. The BMX bike has thin red wheels with a racing number plate in the front handlebars. It's not a common model, so the Ramos family is asking people to keep an eye out, and alert authorities if they spot it. To the man who made off with the Ramos' family heirloom, Bradley and his father have a stern message. "Give it back, and never come back to this neighborhood again," Bradley said.
