Zhou was in Guangxi to extend the central government's congratulations and good will to the people of Guangxi, one of China's five minority autonomous regions.     Zhou, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Saturday morning presented a floral basket to a monument in commemoration of revolutionary martyrs killed in the Bose Uprising in 1929.     The event marks the establishment of the CPC's armed forces in Guangxi to fight against local warlords, as well as the growth of the CPC's power at its early stage.     Following decades of construction and development, Bose has developed into an industrial center, producing aluminum and electricity.     During his visit to the Guangxi branch of the Aluminum Corporation of China Limited (CHALCO) in Bose, Zhou encouraged the company to research and develop more innovative technology to boost the development of the company and Guangxi's economy.     Zhou also inspected a water control project in Bose, which was built two years ago for the purpose of flood control, irrigation and electricity production.     Zhou has been staying in Guangxi since Wednesday when he led the central government delegation to attend the celebrations marking the 50th founding anniversary of the minority autonomous region.     The autonomous region was founded on Dec. 11, 1958 and has 12 ethnic groups. The total population in Guangxi by the end of 2007 was more than 50 million, one-third are of the Zhuang ethnic minority.

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- China called on the international community here on Friday to honor its commitment of aid to Iraq so as to help speed up its process of reconstruction and development.     La Yuefan, minister counselor from the Chinese mission to the United Nations, said at the Security Council meeting on the situation concerning Iraq that for progress in security and political fields to be effectively consolidated, economic and social reconstruction must also move ahead.     In this regard, "we call upon the international community to truly honor its commitment of aid to Iraq by helping Iraq speed up its process of reconstruction and development," La said, adding that China supports the meeting of foreign ministers of neighboring countries and other mechanisms playing a bigger role.     China also hopes that the Iraqi government will continue to lead all factions to agree on the common vision for the future of the country by placing national interests above everything else and strengthening dialogue and unity, La said.     "We encourage UNAMI (the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq) to continue its positive role in this regard. We believe it is essential to promote political dialogue and national reconciliation of Iraq in order to consolidate the progress already achieved in various fields," the Chinese diplomat said.     Noting that right now the process of peace and recovery in Iraqis at a critical juncture, La said China welcomes the continuous progress achieved by Iraq in the political, security and recovery fields.     However, he pointed out that the overall security situation in Iraq remained fragile.     "We are especially concerned about the large number of civilian casualties caused by military operations and violent attacks," La said.     "We call once again upon the parties concerned to do everything possible to avoid civilian casualties while carrying out military operations," he said.

BEIJING, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held a telephone conversation with his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama on bilateral ties Friday, with both sides expressing the willingness to further the ties.     The Chinese president said China is ready to strengthen dialogue, promote mutual trust and expand cooperation with the United States in a bid to confront various global challenges together and push forward a stable development of the Sino-U.S. relationship.     Hu said the core interest of either country should be respected by each other and taken into consideration.     As the contagious financial crisis is still producing severe influence to national economies and people's lives, the international community should strengthen coordination and promote closer cooperation to stand up to the challenge, Hu said.     Describing the Sino-U.S. ties as the most important bilateral relations for both sides, Obama said enhancing bilateral constructive dialogue and cooperation is in the interest of not only the two countries themselves, but the world at large.     The U.S. side is expecting closer cooperation with China on major international and regional issues, he said, adding that the U.S. government is willing to join hands with China to develop a more active and constructive bilateral relationship.     Hu Jintao said China acknowledged U.S. efforts in stabilizing the financial market and stimulating the economy, adding that China is willing to further strengthen communication and coordination with the U.S. side in macroeconomic policies, and firmly oppose trade and investment protectionism.     Hu said China will join hands with the United States to work toward fruitful achievements in April's Group of 20 (G20) summit in London and promote healthy and stable development of the world economy and finance.     Obama said it is crucial for the United States and China, the two most important economies, to enhance cooperation.     Both sides exchanged visit invitations. The fifth dialogue was held in China in January this year.
