One resident in Sarpy County, Nebraska, reported several drones flying in unison last week."Most interesting part is that the drones were flying in the night. People don't know what they are doing there. No feedback from federal agencies, local government and no one really knows what's going on there," said Victor Huang, an assistant professor at the Aviation Institute at the University of Nebraska Omaha.Drones are complex and extremely advanced. They can be used for for film making, emergency services and agricultural monitoring."The drone, similar to our computer systems, it can really do a lot of things. To me, the only limitation is your imagination," Huang said.But no one, not even the Federal Aviation Administration, knows what these drones are doing except that they're flying in a pattern, they're large and there's many of them."They don't know if it's illegal or not because right now there's no way of knowing what is up there," KMTV pilot Justin Enos said.Based on flight patterns and altitude, experts believe it could be some sort of agricultural monitoring. Regardless, the fact that no one can account for them is frightening residents. Some have even talked about shooting the drones down, but that's not a good idea. The mystery drones are reportedly up to six feet in length. If the drones happen to weigh more than 55 pounds, they technically could be considered to be aircraft."If that's a legal registered drone, if you shoot it down, you are essentially shooting an aircraft down. So that is definitely illegal," Huang said."Registered or not, it's going to be dangerous. The batteries on these things are very flammable," Enos said.Enos believes if it's agricultural information the people behind the drones are after, the general public shouldn't be too worried."I think people are concerned, especially people that aren't familiar with drones and the technology," Enos said.The Nebraska State Patrol tweeted Monday that they are working with several sheriff's offices, local police departments and federal authorities to figure out who is behind the drone activity.The FAA has also stated they are aware of the sightings and are investigating.This story was originally published 2217

With November being "National COPD Awareness Month,” experts urge patients who suffer from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease to verify their treatment plans, and to be diligent about COVID-19 precautions.Seventy-one-year-old Janice Cotton is a self-proclaimed "advocate for COPD-ERS." Her advocacy is all over YouTube. She says, “Oh, I think so!.. I think I’m a YouTube star.”Cotton said she likes to tell her story, and while full of personality, her road to advocacy wasn't easy.“In 1997, my mom died from COPD,” Cotton said. “We didn’t know what it was. We had no idea. The last thing she said was, ‘Janice, please stop smoking.’”She said she smoked a pack a day for more than 40 years. Even after being diagnosed with COPD, she says she still smoked.“I didn’t quit smoking when he told me, because when I went into the office to get the test, I was told you’ll be dead in 10 years so I said, ‘What the heck? I may as well keep smoking,’” Cotton said.Eventually, she quit, and now urges others to do the same.Does Cotton still crave tobacco?“Oh no way Jose. Not at all; I don’t crave it,” Cotton said. “I don’t think about it. I tell people who are thinking about smoking, I say, 'Put a straw in your mouth, toothpick, something, anything but a cigarette.'”“This is a treatable disease,” said Dr. Tom Corbridge, pulmonologist, a faculty member at the University of Northwestern near Chicago, and GlaxoSmithKline medical expert. “It is a progressive illness but it's also a treatable illness and the sooner you get in, the sooner you connect with a trusted healthcare provider, the sooner you can get help to restore some of the things you’ve lost.”He says COPD is an umbrella term for chronic lung disease, which include things like emphysema and chronic bronchitis. He says there are 27 million patients with COPD in the U.S. and it's the fourth-leading cause of death.“The main symptom that COPD causes (is) shortness of breath," Corbridge said. It's "hallmark symptom that would be worse with exertion, but also cough, raising of phlegm or mucous and wheezing are really the hallmarks of the disease.”Those symptoms, he said, can be complicated by COVID-19.“The pandemic has impacted my life and my disease management,” Cotton said. “So many of us were scared (of) death and afraid and didn’t want to go anywhere, didn’t want anybody to come see you.”In a recent GlaxoSmithKline study, 83% of people living with COPD agree that COVID-19 has been a wake-up call about the vulnerability of the illness. But, Cotton said she's using her voice to make sure all COPD patients are diligent about things like face masks, hand washing and social distancing. She also recommends having what she calls an "action plan" with your doctor.“I want people to understand and realize that knowledge is power. The more you investigate and research, the better off you’ll be when it comes to managing COPD,” Cotton said.Doctors say the most important aspect is staying in touch with your physicians and staying on top of your symptoms. 3035

And amid the pandemic, fewer travelers are passing through airports.“We’ve never seen this kind of extended impact on aviation. In the history of aviation, our passenger numbers are where they were in 1965, so that gives you a sense of how dramatic the decrease in passengers has been.” Becca Doten, a spokesperson for Los Angeles World Airports, said.Also known as LAX, it's the third-largest airport in the world. It’s the No. 1 origination and destination airport in the world and it’s undergoing massive changes.“We’ve installed touch-free faucets in the restrooms, touch-free water bottle refill stations, touch-free water fountains as well as employing UV technology to clean our air in our terminals,” Doten said.There are Plexiglas barriers everywhere. Even the elevators are touch-less.“Making it so elevators stop on every floor so you don’t have to touch the buttons and installing anti-bacterial sanitizing buttons and film in areas that people do need to touch,” Doten said.Concessions are mobile too. And the vending machines aren't full of snacks, but personal protective equipment.“You can find vending machines that will have hand sanitizer, face coverings, gloves and unique items like UVC light to clean your phone and all are TSA compliant so you can take what you purchase there through TSA with no problem,” Doten said.ACI, or Airports Council International, advocates for airports around the world. It has been guiding both big and small airports as all of them undergo changes to make people safe.“It’s tasking us to find methods and means of things that we’ve never come up with before to keep our industry going,” said Lew Bleiweis, who is the chair of the ACI’s North America branch.Pittsburgh, for instance, came out with a cleaning robot that shines UV rays on surfaces around the terminals. Other cities are installing new ventilation systems to purify the air in the terminals.“Almost every airport, if not all of them in North America, have instituted more cleaning protocols, more routines,” Bleiweis said. “A lot of airports are using electrostatic cleaners that you see spray out a mist that adheres to surfaces killing off viruses.”And he says, imagine a futuristic world of travel. That's where most airports are headed.“There will be sensors and touch-less things in the ground or in the floor or walls that will be able to facial recognize who you are and send an automatic boarding pass to your device,” Bleiweis said.When asked if travelers are getting more comfortable with all the recent industry changes, Bleiweis said, “I would say it was going in that direction and people are getting more comfortable. The resurgence that’s come up in Florida, Texas, California, that has really put the question as to whether people want to get on an airplane or not."Bleiweis says there has been an incline as we move through the summer. It'll be interesting to see what happens after Labor Day and as we approach the holidays.“Airports are and the aviation system are huge economic drivers in this country and across the world and people have to feel comfortable to travel and we need to get those wheels turning in the economic portion of aviation,” Bleiweis said.Doten said, “It’s going to be a long, slow recovery for the airport and travel industry, however we feel that as people feel safer and understand the steps we’re taking, they’ll feel more comfortable coming back to our airport.”But she also says LAX in particular has spared no expense in making major changes to bring people back to the skies. 3889
